Dear Linda,
Hope you’re having a wonderful week! I’m super excited to tell you about our Smart Farm field trip last Friday.
Upon arrival, the farm workers showed us all kinds of cool high - tech devices: sensors that track soil moisture, automatic watering systems, and even drones checking the crops from above. The most impressive part was picking fresh strawberries. One bite and you could taste the sweet juice exploding in your mouth. So amazing to see how tech makes farming smarter!
This activity was a great eye - opener. Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of modern farming but also felt the charm of cutting - edge science. How I wish you could visit our Smart Farm some day.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1: Anxious, I decided to tun to Ms. Garcia. My voice trembling, I admitted that Hayley wasn’t real. To my surprise, instead of being angry, she listened quietly and smiled. “It takes courage to tell the truth,” she said, patting me gently. “Maybe this is your chance to find a real partner. Just start with a hello.” For the first time, I felt a little lighter, as if I had stepped out from behind the story I had created. Her words finally encouraged me to take that step.
Paragraph 2: The next day, I went to the music room to find Emily. She was practicing as usual, focused and calm. Gathering my courage, I told her everything and asked if she would play with me. Without the slightest hesitation, she broke into that familiar, encouraging smile. “Of course. You’ve got this,” she replied softly. After several rehearsals, we finally stood on the festival stage side by side, and I saw my teacher smiling in the crowd. Our harmonious performance convinced me that the friendship I had courageously won worked wonders, even though Hayley never truly existed.

At the beginning of every school year, a new crop of 15-year-olds pile into my classroom. Some are excited for the new year, while others are unmotivated. Regardless of their attitude, I’m always embarrassed to admit I am scared.
Just fake (假装) it until you make it, my fellow teachers advised. But no matter how much I faked it, and how many years spent teaching the same course, the fear has continued. As the relationships with my students deepen, I naturally grow comfortable, but even then, I feel nervous when something unexpected happens in class.
One might expect that this would cause me to be ashamed, to practice even harder, or to study public speaking methods. But I have learned another way.
This year, I was given a group of 10th graders, and on the first day of class, over half shared in their self-introduction paragraph that they were shy and afraid to speak up in class. My replies on their papers were personal: Did you notice how I held my hands to keep them from shaking today? Did you hear how my voice trembled when I noticed everyone looking at me?
And slowly but surely, my students began to open up about the root of their fears. When they saw me, their experienced teacher, trembling, they had more courage during their presentation. When they heard me stumble (磕绊) over my words, they accepted their own pauses trying to find the right ones.
Fear of public speaking rarely goes away completely. So many students are silenced by it in the classroom, but we as teachers have the chance to encourage by leading with empathy instead of pushing or disappointment. That starts with finding the courage to be honest about our own flaws (瑕疵). We must then teach ourselves, and by extension, our students to reframe those flaws as strengths rather than weaknesses.
24. What does the author say about her fear of public speaking?
A. It becomes easier to hide with practice.
B. It prevents her from teaching effectively.
C. It remains despite her teaching experience.
D. It appears when students are less motivated.
25. How did the author deal with her fear this year?
A. She studied public speaking skills.
B. She used it to bond with her students.
C. She switched to a different course.
D. She asked her fellow teachers for advice.
26. How were the students affected by the author’s change?
A. They became brave speakers. B. They lost respect for her.
C. They found their own flaws. D. They made academic progress.
27. What message does the author want to convey?
A. Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.
B. Profession is more important than honesty.
C. Sharing personal struggles can empower others.
D. Public speaking skills make a successful teacher.

In 1993, more than 700 people were sickened (and four died) after eating at a fast-food restaurant chain. It took investigators 39 days to determine that the illnesses were connected and more than a month to find the thing that was making people sick: hamburgers contaminated (污染) with E. coli.
Food safety experts and other scientists knew there had to be a faster way to detect and link outbreaks. They determined that if public health laboratories could each conduct the same kind of DNA analysis on bacteria and then share the data, dots could be connected and outbreaks could be identified sooner.
And so, PulseNet was born. Launched in 1996, PulseNet, developed in partnership with APHL, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other federal partners and four state public health labs, is a national laboratory network that analyzes a pathogen’s (病原体) unique DNA fingerprint. The resulting data are published to a national database. Microbiologists and epidemiologists from around the country can access the database and determine if there are similarities that indicate cases are related and even share a common source of infection.
PulseNe enables investigators to identify eight illness-causing pathogens and discover outbreak clusters (组) in near real-time. Investigations that used to take weeks, for example, can now take only days. That quick turnaround time is essential to saving lives.
CDC reports that in the 30 years since PulseNet has been in action, over 1 billion pounds of contaminated food have been recalled and an estimated 270,000 food borne illnesses associated with three common illness-causing bacteria — Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria — have been prevented. By developing new technologies such as PulseNet 2.0, the newly launched data analysis platform, PulseNet continues to enhance its ability to detect and prevent additional illnesses.
In celebration of PulseNet’s milestone birthday, we rounded up stories illustrating the enormous impact the network has had on disease monitoring and outbreak detection. Read on to learn how each one emphasizes PulseNet’s vital contribution to human, animal and environmental health.
28. What does the author want to show by telling the fast-food chain outbreak?
A. Food safety was a top priority. B. Illness detection was inefficient.
C. Fast food required stricter regulation. D. Public health was a challenging issue.
29. What can PulseNet do?
A. Identify rare bacteria. B. Cure certain diseases.
C. Collect patients’ fingerprints. D. Conduct DNA analysis on bacteria.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about concerning PulseNet?
A. Its features. B. Its contributions. C. Its future plans. D. Its working principles.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To explain the birth of PulseNet.
B. To introduce a laboratory network.
C. To collect stories for an anniversary.
D. To show the progress of food safety tools.

Have you ever found someone copying your gestures or facial expressions during a conversation? This is the Chameleon (变色龙) Effect, the non-conscious mimicry (模仿) of others’ behaviors. Just like a chameleon integrates into its environment, people unconsciously mimic others’ gestures, mannerisms or accents to build connections and smooth interactions, which is a common yet easily overlooked human trait.
Psychologists John Bargh and Tanya Chartrand proved the Chameleon Effect in a 1999 experiment. They asked 78 participants to talk with experimenters during a personality test. To avoid conscious mimicry, researchers used photos as a distraction during conversations. The results showed participants unconsciously increased face touching by 20% and foot movement by 50% to match the experimenters. Another part found people who were mimicked rated the experimenters more positively, showing mimicry boosts likability. The Chameleon Effect stems from two main reasons. It is rooted in human empathy — people mimic others to share feelings and build emotional bonds. It also evolved as a survival trait: fitting in with a group helps people gain support and avoid danger. In daily life, this explains why couples or close friends gradually adopt similar speech habits or gestures.
This effect also appears in speech and social settings. People may unconsciously pick up others’ accents or phrases after long interactions. For example, a football player once accidentally used a French accent during an interview after living in France for months, a typical display of the effect. However, excessive mimicry may make people lose their sense of self. Such over-mimicry can lead to confusion about one’s true personality.
Overall, the Chameleon Effect is a positive social tool that promotes connection and empathy. It helps reduce social tension and build trust between people. While it helps people integrate into groups, balancing mimicry with self-identity is crucial to avoiding losing oneself in social interactions. With this awareness, people can use the effect wisely while preserving their own uniqueness.
32. Which of the following is an example of the “Chameleon Effect”?
A. A girl copies her deskmate’s movements.
B. A driver follows a policeman’s directions.
C. An applicant learns the judge’s expressions by heart.
D. An assistant practices a foreigner’s tones on purpose.
33. What can be inferred about the “Chameleon Effect” from paragraph 2?
A. Personality changes with conscious mimicry.
B. Likability increases mimicry in conversations.
C. People mimic others to gain group acceptance.
D. Mimicry arouses shared feelings between couples.
34. What is the downside of excessive mimicry?
A. The loss of self-identity. B. An end to true connection.
C. The failure of mutual trust. D. A decrease in social tension.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the “Chameleon Effect”?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Dismissive. D. Cautious
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Helping others can be one of the most meaningful things you do, but it can also take a lot out of you, making you lose sight of the fact that you need support, too. You might think pushing through is normal. 36 You need to learn how to invest in yourself and pay attention to your mental well-being.
Burnout doesn’t always look like exhaustion.
Burnout isn’t always obvious. 37 It can be irritability (易怒), lack of focus, or feeling like you’re disconnected from the work you used to enjoy. Being aware of the emotional signs early makes it easier to step in and make changes. That might mean adjusting your schedule, taking breaks when you can, or just giving yourself permission to unplug after a long day.
Learning something new boosts mental energy.
Doing the same routine every day can start to feel dull. 38 Adding something fresh to your day, like learning a new technique or exploring a new topic, can bring your energy back. A few minutes a day reading an article, watching a short tutorial, or engaging in a new task can refresh your mindset.
39
If you want to know how to invest in yourself, having control over your schedule can make a huge difference in how you feel day to day. When you’re able to choose how and when you complete tasks, it reduces stress and helps you feel more balanced.
Small wins matter for motivation.
Sometimes big goals feel out of reach. That’s why small wins are so important. Checking something off your list — even if it’s just attending a class — builds positive drive. 40 Over time, those small wins lead to larger milestones.
A. Purpose is a powerful mental health tool.
B. Time flexibility leads to emotional stability.
C. It doesn’t just show up as physical tiredness.
D. Sometimes it can mean saying yes to extra tasks.
E. When that happens, your interest and motivation can fade.
F. But the truth is, constantly putting yourself last isn’t sustainable.
G. Each time you complete a step, you prove to yourself that progress is happening.

Maybe teenage years weren’t the ideal time to receive my mother’s advice to wear a range of colours. What better way to express how you feel on any given day, and convey that mood 56 the world, she would say. It was important to the eye, to the soul.
It really isn’t the best advice 57 (give) any teenager, especially one 58 was hoping to disappear in all-black sportswear. Now I see her advice isn’t about fashion or looking good for others, or making an impression, 59 about dressing from the inside. It has taken me a while to lean into the power of this. I’m not quite sure when I 60 (start) applying it myself but I remember waking up one morning in my early 20s, looking at my wardrobe (衣柜) and thinking: what colour do I feel like wearing today?
It’s 61 question that brings a surprising degree of daily self-awareness. It’s asking, “What mood am I in?” Do I want 62 (see) or do I want to hide?”. The idea of starting the day in the right colour sends me back to myself.
My wardrobe 63 (become) more colourful over the years, and, my mother was right: it does bring me joy to wear pink shoes with a golden shine, and a silver dress which is so bright that it can 64 (probable) be spotted from the moon. Wearing 65 (shine) colours brings me enormous happiness, and when I do, I feel as if I am shouting: “Look, it’s me, me, meeee.”

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“All right, class, settle down!” my teacher, Ms. Garcia, announced. “Today, you are going to write about your best friend in real life. I want specific details. Begin!”
I sat with my pencil over my paper. For a moment, I hesitated. I knew I didn’t really have someone like that. Still, I lowered my head and began to write: My best friend is Hayley. She plays the cello (大提琴), like I do, and we go to orchestra every Saturday. She makes people laugh, and whenever I feel nervous, she tells me, “You’ve got this.” We’ve been best friends since fourth grade.
I knew Hayley wasn’t real, but it was easier than explaining why I didn’t have a best friend.
In fact, there was a girl in my orchestra class, Emily, who usually practiced the cello in the music room. Once, she helped me adjust my bow hold after a rehearsal (排练) and gave me an encouraging smile. “You’ve got this,” she said softly. I had also seen her patiently help another student work through a difficult passage, never showing the slightest impatience. We didn’t talk much because I was too shy to start a conversation, but I couldn’t forget her kindness. Without realizing it, I had borrowed pieces of her to create Hayley.
At school, I didn’t have real friends. My classmates were polite and kind, but I was just too hesitant and shy to be the first to reach out. When I needed someone, I didn’t know who to turn to. When loneliness came over, I would imagine someone like Emily beside me, her gentle voice offering encouragement. She was the friend I wished I could have.
The next day, Ms. Garcia returned my essay with a bright red “A”. “Hayley sounds wonderful! I’ve signed you and her up to perform a cello duo (二重奏) at next Friday’s Cultural Festival.” My heart skipped a beat. The lie I had built for protection suddenly turned into a trap. I was totally at a loss.
