Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. My spirits ebb, as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. “Just wait,” a neighbour advised. “You’ll wake up one morning and spring will just be here.”
On 3 May that year I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues and greens. Leaves had unfolded and daffodils were fighting their way heavenward.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark twisted branches stretch out in unpruned (未经修剪的) abandon. Each spring it blossoms so freely that the air becomes filled with the scent of apple.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to remove a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbours opened their windows and stepped onto their porches (门廊) . These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens.
My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?” she asked anxiously. Another neighbour frowned as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now,” he warned. Soon half the neighbourhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living, and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both familiarity and shared wonder.
Just the other day I saw one of my neighbours at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”
24. What does the underlined sentence “My spirits ebb” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. I feel relieved. B. I am tired. C. I am surprised. D. I feel blue.
25. What do we know about the apple tree mentioned in the passage?
A. It is appealing only to the author.
B. It has been abandoned by its original owner.
C. It is regarded as a delight in the neighbourhood.
D. It has been ignored by everyone in the community.
26. According to paragraph 4, why did the neighbours open their windows and step onto their porches?
A. They wanted to get to know the author.
B. They were concerned about the safety of the tree.
C. They wanted to prevent the author from pruning the tree.
D. They were surprised that someone unknown was pruning the tree.
27. What might the author’s neighbour mentioned in the last paragraph most care about?
A. When spring would arrive. B. How to survive the long winter.
C. The pruning of the apple tree. D. The neighbourhood gathering.
D 25. C 26. B 27. D
根据上文“Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey.(每年四月我都被同样的忧虑所困扰,担心今年不会有春天了。
根据文章第五段“It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder.(就好像那棵老苹果树把我们聚集在它的树枝下,既是为了相识,也是为了分享惊奇)”可知,文章的苹果树能把邻居们聚在一起交流、分享,故被认为是邻里之间的快乐。
根据第四段“I set out to remove a few disorderly branches.(我开始修剪几根乱插乱放的树枝)”和第五段“My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?” she asked anxiously. Another neighbour frowned as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now,” he warned.(我的移动房屋邻居第一个开口说话。“你不是要把它砍倒吧?”她焦急地问。当我砍下一根树枝时,另一个邻居皱起了眉头。“现在别杀它,”他警告说)”可知,看到作者修剪苹果树,邻居们都打开窗户,走出门廊,是因为他们担心作者把树砍倒,即担心苹果树的安全。故选B。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”(他说,最近的这个冬天特别漫长,他抱怨说,他在我们附近没有见过任何人,也没有和任何人说过话。然后,他看着我说:“我们需要再修剪一下那棵苹果树。”)”可知,邻居提出修剪苹果树,是因为他想借这个机会见到其他邻居,和大家聚在一起说说话,所以他最关心的是邻里聚会。故选D。
C
A new study, conducted by British company Mindlab International, has found that listening to music at work increases accuracy and speed, The Telegraph reported. Perhaps, some parents disagree with this idea, saying, “Switch off the music and concentrate!” Well, if that’s the case with your parents, you might now be able to convince them that you have science on your side.
The company gave 26 participants a series of different tasks for five days in a row, including spell checking, mathematical word problems, data entry, and abstract reasoning. The participants completed these tasks while listening to music or no music at all.
The results showed that while music was playing, 88% of participants produced their most accurate test results and 81% completed their fastest work. David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told The Telegraph, “Music is a very powerful management tool if you want to increase not only the efficiency of your workforce but also their emotional state... they are going to become more positive about the work.”
You may have a list of your favorite songs, but not all kinds of music match all homework. For maths or other subjects involving numbers or attention to detail, you should listen to classical music, the study found. In the study, pop music enabled participants to complete their tasks 58% faster than when listening to no music at all. If you’re reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice, as it is the best kind for spell checking. It cut mistakes by 14%, compared to listening to no music. After finishing your homework, do you often take time to check your answers? Maybe some dance music is suitable for you.
28. What did the participants have to do in the study?
A. Persuade their parents to listen to music.
B. Listen to the same music together.
C. Try their best to choose the most suitable music.
D. Finish tasks with music or without music at all.
29. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. Tools. B. Results. C. Tests. D. Participants.
30. When you review your English writing, what kind of music is the best choice?
A. Classical music. B. Dance music. C. Pop music. D. Rock music.
31. Which of the following can be the main idea for the passage?
A. Music helps us to learn.
B. We cannot live without music.
C. Different music stands for different lives.
D. There are many kinds of music in the Classroom.
D 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第二段中“The participants completed these tasks while listening to music or no music at all. (参与者在听音乐或完全不听音乐的情况下完成这些任务。)”可知,参与者要在听音乐或完全不听音乐的情况下完成任务。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The results showed that while music was playing, 88% of participants produced their most accurate test results and 81% completed their fastest work. David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told The Telegraph, “Music is a very powerful management tool if you want to increase not only the efficiency of your workforce but also their emotional state... they are going to become more positive about the work.”
根据最后一段中“If you’re reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice, as it is the best kind for spell checking. (如果你在复习英语写作,流行音乐是最好的选择,因为它是拼写检查的最佳选择。)”可知,复习英语写作时,流行音乐是最佳选择。
【31题详解】

Michael Gonsalves, a chef of Golden Oak at Disney World, has a cuisine concept rooted in fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that originated from childhood harvesting produce from their family garden with his mom to eventually leading kitchens at Walt Disney World Resorts to employ a sustainable model.
“Truly the whole process starts with menu planning,” he said. Creating one dish leads into the creation of many more through the end-to-end use of products. As chefs, they are always searching for the best ingredients. It is then their focus to ensure they appreciate and respect all that go into each and every one of them. For example, they source chicken that is naturally grown and fed on a natural plant forward diet, no hormones (激素) or additives — that’s used in many ways throughout menus from a simple grilled chicken breast to bone soup. Nothing goes to waste.
When they do have waste, even if minimal, they shift it from landfills to transform it into compost (堆肥) that’s then used across the Walt Disney World property. They also support Second Harvest, a local community food bank where healthy produce, prepared, but not served, meals eatable for human consumption are donated. Disney also works with pig farmers when they can’t distribute foods past the point of safety for human consumption. Besides, wildlife reservations love to get the meat because tigers and wild cats can still eat that.
Their operations are “on a path to a sustainable zero waste kitchen of tomorrow” where chefs learn the full-life cycle of plants from seed to plate and gain a better understanding and appreciation for the product and their craft.
Golden Oak at Disney has millions of bees that produce up to 300 pounds of honey per year, plus those bees help with cross pollination (授粉) of their gardens on a daily basis. They advocate a culture that helps develop not only the quality of food, but an appreciation for nature.
32. Where did Michael Gonsalves’ idea about cuisine come from?
A. His mom’s suggestions. B. His dream of becoming a chef.
C. His interest in delicious food. D. His labor experience as a child.
33. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Give examples about zero waste.
B. Introduce the unique habit of wildlife.
C. Stress the importance of natural food.
D. Explain the operation mode of the food bank.
34. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Disney World: New Cuisine Road
B. Michael Gonsalves: Creative Chef
C. Michael Gonsalves: Advocate of Food Diversity
D. Disney World: Pioneer in Environmental Protection
D 33. A 34. A

根据全文内容,尤其是第一段“Michael Gonsalves, a chef of Golden Oak at Disney World, has a cuisine concept rooted in fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that originated from childhood harvesting produce from their family garden with his mom to eventually leading kitchens at Walt Disney World Resorts to employ a sustainable model.

D
