Passage 1

I never truly understood China’s global influence until that summer in Nairobi. As a volunteer teacher, I had expected to 16 basic English to local children, but what I discovered was far more 17 .
On my first day at the community center, I noticed a group of children 18 around a small tablet, their faces lit with enthusiasm. The entire class was 19 by the vivid colors and dynamic characters of the cartoons. “We love these stories!” one girl told me in 20 English. I was astonished that Chinese cultural products had reached this 21 corner of the world.
The real 22 came during our traditional culture class. When I showed them Chinese paper-cutting, a boy named Joseph 23 shouted, “This looks just like the patterns on my grandmother’s dress!” His grandmother, as it turned out, 24 a Chinese skilled worker decades ago. This 25 between cultures left me speechless.
As weeks passed, I 26 more connections. The local hospital used Chinese-made medical equipment, and the new highway being built nearby was 27 by Chinese companies. I began to see China’s influence not as a distant concept, but as a living, breathing 28 in people’s daily lives.
On my last day, the children presented me with a thank-you card 29 with Chinese characters. Holding that card, I felt a profound (深刻的) sense of 30 in my country and its role in the world.
