Hey guys! The summer break is almost here, and my parents want me to get a part-time job. But my friends are planning beach days. I don't know what to do!
Getting a part-time job means having my own money. That sounds amazing. However, this is my last real break before senior year. Will I regret working all summer instead of hanging out? Also, what kind of job could I get? Retail (零售)? Food-service?
Has anyone here had a summer job? Was it worth it? Give me your honest opinions!
I worked at a store last summer break, and honestly, it was totally worth it. Yeah, I missed some beach days, but having my own money felt so good. I bought my first computer well, an old one, but it’s MINE. The work was boring sometimes, but it taught me a lot about responsibility and dealing with different people. My advice: get a job, but try to find one where you can work with your friends. Make it way more fun!
I think it depends on the job! I've been babysitting (当临时保姆) for two summers, and it’s perfect. The kids are actually fun to be around, and the parents pay pretty well. I set my own hours, so I can still go to the beach or hang out with my friends. What’s more, I'm building teaching experience. Maybe try something flexible (灵活的) like babysitting or dog walking? It's the best of both worlds!

But lately, Marta’s feelings began to change. High school brought her new friends and a busy social life. She started to find the simple tradition of making dumplings with her family boring.
One Sunday, Marta received a message from her friend, Sofia. Sofia invited her to go to the movies. Marta looked at the dumpling dough (面团) and then at her phone.“Mom,” she said, “Sofia needs me to help her with a project. Can I skip (略过) dumplings today?”
Mom felt a little sad, but she nodded and said, “Of course, honey. Go.”
Marta went to the movies with Sofia. They had fun and shared popcorn, but Marta felt a sense of unease, as if she was missing something important.
That evening, she returned home and found Mom asleep in her chair. On the kitchen table was a single bowl, covered with a cloth. Under it, Marta found a plate of warm dumplings and a note. It read:
“For my Marta. I saved you some. The stories can wait, but you should know— the secret ingredient (材料) is always love. I hope your project went well.”
Marta stared at the note and dumplings. She thought of the laughter in the kitchen, the flour on their faces, and the stories of their family. Softly, she woke her mom up.“Mom,” she whispered (低声说), holding the bowl. “Tell me the stories about our family. I’m listening now.”

Today, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is becoming more and more popular around the world. For a long time in the past, many foreigners thought TCM was just a mysterious cultural tradition. But now, this idea is changing greatly because more and more people try it and see for themselves that it really works.
An important moment in this change happened recently. An American Internet star who has over 37 million followers showed his visit to a TCM store in Chengdu on a live video. He tried treatments like acupuncture (针刺疗法)—thin needles are put into certain points of the body. He was nervous at first, but he was surprised when his headache disappeared quickly after the treatment. His video was watched by millions of people online, showing people everywhere how effective TCM can be.
This is not just one case. In a city in Northeast China, a moxibustion clinic (艾灸馆) receives thousands of Russian visitors every year. They travel a long way to get help for health problems like neck and shoulder pain. Almost all of them leave the moxibustion clinic feeling much better. Similarly, a doctor in Guangzhou recently helped a German patient with a serious cold using herbal (药草的) medicine, and the next day, the patient's fever went down. Results like these are letting more and more people around the world see the value of TCM.
With the help of modern technology and creative ways of sharing culture, like including TCM in popular movies and online short videos, this ancient wisdom is reaching new people. The world is starting to see TCM not as something old and mysterious, but as a practical and useful way to take care of health in modern life.
8. What made the American Internet star surprised?
A. The quick effect of acupuncture.
B. The long history of TCM stores.
C. The large number of his followers.
9. What’s the writer’s purpose in mentioning the foreign patients in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce how herbal medicine works.
B. To explain why TCM is a mysterious tradition.
C. To show that TCM is earning foreigners’ trust.

A. From considering it as a habit to taking it as a wonderful art.
B. From seeing it as an old practice to accepting it as a tradition.
C. From thinking of it as a mystery to regarding it as a useful treatment.
11. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (P= paragraph)
A. B. C.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. B

【10题详解】
第一段提到“many foreigners thought TCM was just a mysterious cultural tradition”,最后一段提到“seeing TCM...as a practical and useful way”,因此外国人对中医药的看法从认为它神秘转变为认为它是一种有用的治疗方法。

Giraffes are famous for their great height. This allows them to reach the leaves on the tops of trees in Africa. Without doubt, their long necks are a big help with this. But a new study says something surprising: their long legs are just as important——maybe even more important.
First, let’s talk about the problem: long necks are hard work for the heart. To send blood all the way up to the brain, a giraffe’s heart has to work very hard. In fact, a resting giraffe’s heart uses more energy than a whole resting human body. This is because the longer the neck, the more energy the heart needs to send blood.
Here’s where the long legs come in. The legs lift the giraffe’s heart higher up in its body. This makes the distance (距离) from the heart to the brain shorter. So the heart doesn’t have to work hard. This saves energy, which means the giraffe doesn’t need to eat as much food. In the African wild, where food is hard to find, this is a big advantage for survival.
To test this idea, scientists made a computer model of an imaginary animal. They called it an“elaffe”. It was a cross between a giraffe and a type of antelope (羚类动物) called an eland. The“elaffe” had a neck longer than a giraffe’s, but its legs were shorter. They found that this animal would use 21% of its energy just to power its heart. For real giraffes, this number is 16%. That’s a big difference!
Of course, long legs also have a major drawback. When giraffes drink water, they have to spread their legs wide apart to bend (弯曲) down. This makes it hard for them to run away quickly if dangerous animals come near. But for giraffes, the energy saved by their long legs is worth this small risk.
12. What does the study find?
A. Giraffes’ necks don’t need to be so long.
B. Giraffes’ legs can be as helpful as their necks.
C. Giraffes’ hearts help send blood to the brain directly.
13. What can we know about“elaffe”?
A. It would be good at running away from danger.
B. It would have longer legs than a real giraffe.
C. It would need more energy for its heart than a real giraffe.
14. What does the underlined word“drawback” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Disadvantage. B. Secret. C. Purpose.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Energy Problem of Giraffes
B. The Importance of Giraffes’ Legs
C. The Study of an Imaginary Animal
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了一项关于长颈鹿的新研究,发现长腿对长颈鹿的重要性不亚于长脖子,甚至可能更为重要,并解释了其中的能量原理。
【12题详解】
第一段提到“their long legs are just as important—maybe even more important”,因此研究发现长颈鹿的腿和脖子一样有用。

Daytime crowds make it hard to focus, but at night, with fewer people, you can look closely and learn more deeply. However, safety is a top concern for these overnight events. The museums solve this by adding more workers. Also, kids under 10 are asked to stay with their parents. Some museums prepare first-aid boxes, and they also set up places where people can ask for help quickly.
These programs not only make museums less crowded but also provide a fun way of learning. Perhaps your next school trip will be a night with dinosaurs.

Marta lived in a happy family. Every Sunday, her family shared a special tradition: making dumplings for the neighbors. As they worked, Mom would tell stories about their family history, filling the kitchen with warmth and laughter.

A. The quick effect of acupuncture.
B. The long history of TCM stores.
C. The large number of his followers.

A. B. C.

“Camping in the museum” has become more and more popular in China, especially during the summer. It allows students to explore historical relics (文物) at night, offering an exciting journey different from daytime tours.
At the Chengdu Natural History Museum, children can take on the role of “dinosaur (恐龙) explorers” at night. They carefully dig for dinosaur bones (骨骼), make bone-like models and use simple maps to find hidden dinosaur coins. After that, they can set up tents nearby. In Luoyang, some museums offer history-themed (主题) overnight stays. Travelers can dress up in historical costumes, eat dinner in the museum halls and camp outdoors near relics. They can also listen to people tell old stories about the things on show, and feel the great beauty of history.
Compared with quick daytime trips, each of these activities provides a full experience. Daytime crowds make it hard to focus, but at night, with fewer people, you can look closely and learn more deeply. However, safety is a top concern for these overnight events.
