Step 1: Lead-in
Show pictures of French and Chinese parties on the screen. Ask students: "What do you know about party customs in France? How are they different from party customs in China?" Introduce the topic: "Today we are going to read an email from Nancy, who is studying in France, to learn about party manners in France."
Step 2: Pre-reading
Activity 1a: Tick important topics
Ask students to look at the list of topics in 1a and tick the ones they think are important before attending a party in a foreign country.
Have students share their choices in pairs and explain their reasons.
Introduce key vocabulary from the list, such as arrival time, table manners, safe conversation topics.
Step 3: While-reading
Activity 1b: Read Nancy's email and identify topic sentences.
Explain the concept of topic sentences and how they help understand the structure of a paragraph.
Activity 1c: Read again and answer the questions
Have students read the email again carefully and answer the five questions in 1c.
Activity 1d: Complete the mind map
Have students read the email once more and complete the mind map in 1d with the tips from the email.
Step 4: Post-reading
Activity 1e: Pair work: Brainstorm tips for Chinese parties. Divide students into pairs. Ask them to use the mind map from 1d to brainstorm tips for attending Chinese parties.
Step 5: Summary & Homework
Review the key tips for attending French parties from Nancy's email.
Emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting different party customs when in a foreign country.
Step 6: Homework
Basic Level: Write a short paragraph (6-8 sentences) about one important custom for attending parties in China.
Improving Level:Find one more tip for attending parties in another country and prepare to share it in the next class
