When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about electronic trash, known as e-waste. The article said that people were burying old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into streams, and throwing cell phones in the garbage. This was dangerous, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals, which can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.
Alex showed the article to his friends. They spent several weeks gathering information about the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They researched how to handle e-waste properly and how could be recycled. Then, they advertised in the local newspaper, asked residents to bring their unwanted electronics to an e-waste drop-off center they set up for the town and found a responsible company to recycle the waste.
After setting up the center, Alex’s team began to think about how to reuse some of the old computers. “If we could restore computers ourselves and distribute them to students who didn’t have their own, we could help students in our area and protect the environment at the same time,” Alex says. He persuaded his school to start teaching students how to restore donated computers. Alex is especially proud of this part of his project. He was even thanked on video by the mother of one of the students who got a free computer.
Since e-waste is a global problem, Alex and his friends are spreading their project internationally. In 2007, they shipped a fully restored media center to a school in Mexico City. During the spring break, they visited the school and helped educate the students about e-waste. They have also shipped two restored media centers to Africa — one to an Internet cafe in Cameroon and one to a cultural center in Nigeria.
Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safely handling e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s harmful trash.”
24. What inspired Alex to Alex to take action against e-waste?
A. A newspaper report he read. B. The decline in crop p production.
C. Amounts of waste in his backyard. D. People’s awareness of e-waste.
25. What can we learn about the e-waste drop-off center?
A. It is run by a big company. B. It was established for the town.
C. It was funded by the government. D. It is responsible for processing waste.
26. Why does the author mention the video message from a mother?
A. To show the project’s positive impact. B. To introduce a new recycling method.
C. To emphasize the needs of the students. D. To express people’s gratitude to the mother.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Deal with E-waste Safely B. A Boy’s Fight Against E-waste
C. Global Projects to Protect Africa D. Harm from E-waste and Solutions

A long face is not the only sign that someone is down. A recent study found how people walk is revealing too, particularly the swing of the arms and legs.
“Walking is one of the most familiar and well-practiced whole-body movements for humans,” said Mina Wakabayashi, the lead author of the study. “Because of this, changes in emotional state may naturally appear in the way we walk. In our results, movements with larger arm and leg swings were more likely to be perceived as angry, whereas movements with smaller swings were more likely to be perceived as sad or fearful.”
During the research, the scientists asked actors to recall life events that caused anger, happiness, fear or sadness and then walk a short distance while keeping each memory in mind. The participants wore tight clothing and reflective markers, allowing the researchers to create point-light videos from the side and front which captured their way of walking without their facial expressions and other bodily cues. Volunteers then watched the videos and declared what emotion each pace brought. They recognized all of the portrayed emotions better than chance. “To some degree, the walkers’ intended emotions were indeed perceived by the observers,” the researchers wrote in Royal Society Open Science.
A second experiment tried to determine specific movements that gave away the walkers’ emotions. To do this, the researchers took walking videos from people without extreme emotions and edited the videos to increase or reduce the arm and leg swinging. Again, the observers saw more pronounced swinging as angry, with less seen as sad or fearful.
Emotions are likely to influence all manner of other ways in which people move their bodies, and researchers hope to explore these in future work. “Being able to infer emotions from body movement may help us understand others quickly during social interactions, even without words,” Wakabayash said. That could mean spotting people’s emotions from afar and changing how we approach them, depending on whether they seem angry or sad.
28. How do annoyed people tend to walk according to the study?
A. With smaller arm and leg swings. B. With larger arm and leg swings.
C. With quicker and lighter steps. D. With longer and firmer paces.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Actors are full of emotions. B. Researchers prefer using videos.
C. The participants were casually dressed. D. The results matched researchers’ prediction.
30. What does the second experiment focus on?
A. The link between certain action and emotion.
B. The anger most people feel when walking.
C. The ability of people to control feelings.
D. The accuracy of emotion experiments.
31. What will the researchers explore next?
A. Skills to improve social communication.
B. Methods of controlling one’s own emotions.
C. The connection between walking and health.
D. Other body movements affected by emotions.
D
Exercise is beneficial to our health in many ways, but it’s not that effective when it comes to losing weight. Now we have the best evidence explaining why this is. People who start to exercise more burn extra calories. However, the actual weight they lose is far less than the amount expected given the extra calories burned.
An analysis of 14 trials has found that our bodies burn less energy for other functions to make up for the calories used during exercise. This effect becomes even stronger when people both eat less and exercise more — and in some cases, it can completely neutralize the extra energy spent exercising. That means dieting alone leads to weight loss, but adding exercise may not help lose any more weight
Herma Pontzer at Duke University says pairing exercise with diet makes the body compensate (补偿) more: “It’s still good for you, just not for weight loss.” When he studied Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, he was amazed they used no more total energy than desk workers. This discovery led Pontzer to propose, in 2015, that our bodies have developed to limit how much energy we burn, and compensate for greater physical activity by saving energy in other ways.
Exercise type matters too. Compensation only occurs with aerobic exercises (有氧运动) like running. With weightlifting, energy use went up more than expected — for example, those consuming 200 extra kilocalories lifting weights saw a 250-kilocalorie rise in total consumption. Pontzer says measuring weightlifting energy use is hard, so findings need to be treated with caution (谨慎), but he guesses extra energy goes to muscle repair and building
While Pontzer sees the findings as very clear evidence of compensation, others are still not convinced. Dylan Thompson notes study limitations, such as extra exercise replacing daily activities like gardening. He and Javier Gonzalez, another professor, at the University of Bath agree more studies are needed. “We really need carefully designed randomized controlled trials in humans,” Thompson said.
32. What does the underlined word “neutralize” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Cancel out. B. Cut down. C. Add up. D. Use up.
33. What surprised Pontzer when he studied hunter-gatherers?
A. They led a less active life than expected.
B. They could save energy in a unique way.
C. They dieted in a way benefiting weight loss.
D. They consumed as much energy as office workers.
34. What does the example of weightlifting show?
A. Total energy use is hard to calculate.
B. Muscle repair needs no extra calories.
C. Aerobic exercise benefits muscle building.
D. Energy compensation varies with exercise types.
35. What is the Dylan Thompson’s attitude towards the energy compensation theory?
A. Dismissive. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
As cities continue to grow, finding enough space to grow food becomes an increasing challenge. Traditional farming requires large areas of land, which are limited in urban environments.____36____ This approach involves growing crops in vertically stacked layers (垂直叠层), often integrated into buildings like high-rises and industrial buildings.
The benefits of vertical farming are numerous. First, it dramatically reduces the distance food needs to travel from farm to table.____37____ Such localization guarantees fresher produce while cutting down on transportation-related pollution. Additionally, vertical farms use up to 95% less water than traditional agriculture because water is recycled within the system.
____38____ Since crops are grown indoors in controlled environments, there is no need for chemical pesticides (杀虫剂). This results in cleaner, healthier food and protects the surrounding ecosystem from harmful runoff.
However, vertical farming also faces significant challenges. The initial cost of setting up a vertical farm is high, requiring investment in specialized lighting, climate control systems, and building modifications (改造). ____39____ For example, leafy greens and herbs grow well indoors, but it remains difficult to profitably grow crops like wheat or rice.
Despite these challenges, many experts believe vertical farming will play an increasingly important role in our future food system. As technology continues to improve and costs gradually decrease, these urban farms are expected to become more common in cities around the world.____40____
A. This method also has environmental advantages.
B. After all, not all crops are suitable for this method.
C. In some cities, residents have started rooftop gardens.
D. Fortunately, an innovative farming method is emerging.
E. Moreover, the range of crops that can be grown is currently limited.
F. Imagine getting your salad from a farm just a few blocks from your home.
G. In this way, we can create more sustainable cities for generations to come.

The old wooden box sat on the highest shelf in the garage, covered in dust. For as long as Leo could remember, it had been there, untouched. He asked about it once, but Mr. Henderson just said, “Nothing important. Just old stuff. Just old stuff.” Leo never asked again. After all, his father wasn’t the type for long conversations.
Leo and his father lived in the same house but different worlds. Mr. Henderson worked long hours at an auto plant, doing a job that paid the bills but fed no passion. He came home tired and quiet. Sometimes Leo caught him staring at the box, but the moment he noticed Leo, he would turn away. While Leo spent his time in his room, filling sketchbooks(素描本) with drawings he never showed his father. They ate dinner in silence, the television filling the space where words should have been.
Then came the college application season. Leo had dreams — he wanted to study art, to paint, to create. But his father shook his head. “Art isn’t a real job. Be practical. Be an engineer!” Leo’s heart sank. He tried to explain, but his father waved him off. Yet the next morning, he noticed his father staring at the box again. His hand reached out slightly, as if toward something he had once loved. Then he saw Leo and dropped his hand. At breakfast, he said nothing about art, but he didn’t bring up engineering again either.
The next weekend, while his father was at work, Leo cleaned out the garage. He finally reached for the wooden box, pried (撬开) open the lock, and lifted the lid. Inside, wrapped in yellowed newspaper, were dozens of paintings — landscapes, portraits, sketches. All beautiful. At the bottom was a faded letter: “We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted...”
Leo sat on the cold floor, hands shaking. His father had gotten into art school. His father had been an artist. His father had given it all up. That evening, when his father came home, he found Leo sitting at the kitchen table with the wooden box open before him.
注意:
Neither of them spoke until Leo finally broke the silence.

B 29. D 30. A 31.

A. Dismissive. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
A 33. D 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“This effect becomes even stronger when people both eat less and exercise more — and in some cases, it can completely neutralize the extra energy spent exercising.(当人们少吃多动时,这种补偿效应会更强,在某些情况下,它会完全neutralize运动消耗的额外能量。)”
根据第三段“When he studied Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, he was amazed they used no more total energy than desk workers.(他研究坦桑尼亚哈扎族狩猎采集者时,惊讶地发现他们消耗的总能量和办公室伏案工作者相差无几。)”
根据第四段“Compensation only occurs with aerobic exercises (有氧运动) like running. With weightlifting, energy use went up more than expected...(能量补偿效应仅出现在跑步这类有氧运动中。而进行举重训练时,能量消耗会超出预期……)”可知,举重的例子说明不同运动类型的能量补偿情况并不相同。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Dylan Thompson notes study limitations, such as extra exercise replacing daily activities like gardening. He and Javier Gonzalez, another professor, at the University of Bath agree more studies are needed.(迪伦・汤普森指出了这项研究存在的局限性,比如额外的运动挤占了园艺这类日常活动的时间。他与巴斯大学的另一位教授哈维尔・冈萨雷斯都认为,还需要开展更多相关研究。)”可知,Dylan Thompson对能量补偿理论持怀疑、不完全信服的态度。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
D 37. F 38. A 39. E 40. G
根据前文“Traditional farming requires large areas of land, which are limited in urban environments. (传统农业需要大面积的耕地,而城市环境中的土地资源有限。)”可知,传统农业在城市中面临土地不足的问题。D选项“Fortunately, an innovative farming method is emerging! (幸运的是,一种创新的农业方式正在出现!)”承接前文,表明一种新的农业方式出现了,接下来后文“This approach involves growing crops in vertically stacked layers, often integrated into buildings like high-rises and industrial buildings. (这种种植方式是在垂直堆叠的多层空间里种植农作物,通常还会和高层楼宇、工业建筑等建筑融为一体。)”进一步介绍了这种新的农业方法,且E选项中的“an innovative farming method”与后文的“This approach”形成指代关系,引出后文对垂直农业的具体介绍。
【37题详解】
根据前文“First, it dramatically reduces the distance food needs to travel from farm to table. (首先,它极大地缩短了食物从农场到餐桌所需的运输距离。)”可知,垂直农业的第一个优势是缩短运输距离。F选项“Imagine getting your salad from a farm just a few blocks from your home. (想象一下,你的沙拉来自离家仅几个街区的农场。)”通过具体的生活场景形象地说明了食物产地离消费者很近,正是对前文“缩短运输距离”这一优势的例证。同时后文“Such localization guarantees fresher produce while cutting down on transportation-related pollution. (这种本地化保证了农产品更新鲜,同时减少了与运输相关的污染。)”中的“Such localization”也回指了F选项中描述的“离家几个街区”的情景。
【38题详解】
空处应为本段主题句。前文“Additionally, vertical farms use up to 95% less water than traditional agriculture because water is recycled within the system. (此外,垂直农场的用水量比传统农业少95%,因为水在系统内是循环利用的。)”已经提到了节水的优势。后文“Since crops are grown indoors in controlled environments, there is no need for chemical pesticides. (由于作物在受控的室内环境中生长,不需要使用化学杀虫剂。)”介绍垂直农业在环保方面的好处。A选项“This method also has environmental advantages. (这种方法还具有环保优势。)”中的“also”表明在前文节水优势基础上的补充,“environmental advantages”则准确概括后文所述的无农药、保护生态系统等内容,起到段落主题句的作用。
【39题详解】
前文“The initial cost of setting up a vertical farm is high, requiring investment in specialized lighting, climate control systems, and building modifications (改造). (建设垂直农场的初期成本较高,需要投入资金购置专业照明设备、气候控制系统,并对建筑进行改造。)”表明垂直农业面临的第一个挑战是成本高。E选项“Moreover, the range of crops that can be grown is currently limited. (此外,目前可种植的作物范围是有限的。)”表明除成本高外,还有可种植的作物范围有限的挑战,是对前文的顺承。且后文“For example, leafy greens and herbs grow well indoors, but it remains difficult to profitably grow crops like wheat or rice. (例如,叶菜和香草类植物在室内生长良好,但种植小麦或水稻等作物仍然难以盈利。)”正是对E选项所述内容的举例说明,即E选项起到承上启下的作用。
【40题详解】
前文“As technology continues to improve and costs gradually decrease, these urban farms are expected to become more common in cities around the world. (随着技术的不断进步和成本的逐渐降低,这些城市农场预计将在世界各地的城市中变得更加普遍。)”阐述了垂直农业未来将更加普及的发展趋势。G选项“In this way, we can create more sustainable cities for generations to come. (通过这种方式,我们可以为子孙后代创建更具可持续性的城市。)”中的“In this way”回指前文所述垂直农业发展的积极趋势,且该项中的“more sustainable cities”与全文第一句“As cities continue to grow, finding enough space to grow food becomes an increasing challenge. (随着城市不断扩张,寻找足够的粮食种植空间正成为日益严峻的挑战。)”中的“cities continue to grow”形成首尾呼应,并升华主题,适合作为全文的总结性语句。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Leo saw his father preparing a drawing table in the garage.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Neither of them spoke until Leo finally broke the silence. “You were accepted into art school, Dad.” His father’s face turned pale. For a long moment, he stared at the paintings, then whispered, “I gave it up after your mother got sick. Art doesn’t pay the bills.” Leo pulled out his sketchbooks from his room and placed them on the table. His father flipped through the pages slowly, his hands trembling. He looked at Leo, eyes wet, but said nothing. Then he turned and walked out of the kitchen.
The next morning, Leo saw his father preparing a drawing table in the garage. Old brushes, tubes of paint, and a fresh canvas sat beside it. “Since you won’t be an engineer,” Mr. Henderson said without looking up, “at least let me teach you something useful.” Leo froze, then smiled. He grabbed his sketchbook and sat down beside his father. They didn’t talk much — just painted side by side as sunlight streamed through the dusty garage window. For the first time, they weren’t two people sharing a house. They were father and son, sharing a world.
