People often regard the Arctic as a freezing Arctic Circle wasteland. In fact, the Arctic has no land, only thick ice. Most of the time, temperatures stay below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30℃. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult condition.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two travelers, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on April 6th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot. People who stay there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes to the ice. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening “leads (水道)”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
20. What happened to the Arctic about 100 years ago?
A. The thick ice broke into small pieces. B. Its environment suddenly became worse.
C. The temperature there went up to 30℃. D. Two men reached the North Pole.
21. According to the article, what problems may people face in the Arctic?
A. Snow storms. B. Lonely areas. C. Long nights. D. Hungry animals.
22. What is the best title for the article?
A. The People Living in the Arctic B. The Real Situation in the Arctic
C. A Difficult Trip to the North Pole D. The Movement of Ocean Water

Sara knew this day was going to come. She had been worrying about it for two weeks. It started after her teacher explained the project. It was an oral presentation (演示) for science.
Sara loved science more than any other subject. She always checked out science books at the library. She was interested in a lot of science topics. Space and geology were her favorites. A report was easy. An oral presentation was another story. Thinking about it kept her awake at night.
Sara feared speaking in public. It made her nervous and quiet. Her mouth would feel dry. Her hands would get wet. Being in front of people was just scary.
This time, her mom tried to help. She gave Sara a few tips. First, Sara imagined her presentation. She pictured herself standing in front of the group and not being scared. Then, Sara practiced her presentation. A mirror was a big help. She even used her family as listeners. Then she got a good rest the night before. She woke up on the report day and ate a healthy breakfast.
Sara was ready. She had taken her mom’s advice. It was time to go. Sara got up in front of her class. She gave her speech, and then it was over. ▲ . She made it!
Her mom’s plan worked. All it took was a little practice and a good attitude (态度). Sara wasn’t afraid of speaking in front of the class anymore. She knew she could do it!

① It can be really awkward (尴尬的) if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of benefits.
② When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence (自信). A 2009 study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
③ Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can also help us manage bad feelings. “Referring to (指代) yourself in the third person leads people to think about themselves more similar to how they think about others,” said Jason Moser, a professor from Michigan State University, US. This can help us see things more widely, from a different point of view, especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.
④ Self-talk also helps improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who read out loud recalled the information the best, researchers said in their study published (发布 ) in the journal Memory. It’s because the information is likely to become a long-term memory if said out loud.
27. What does the word “benefits” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Strange ideas. B. Special needs. C. Healthy ways. D. Good sides.
28. Why does the writer mention (提到) the study in Paragraph 2?
A. To make tennis players confident.
B. To ask tennis players to keep silent.
C. To encourage tennis players to win the matches.
D. To show that self-talk helps develop confidence.
29. Which way of self-talk can help people see things more widely?
A. “What can Annie do to make the situation better?”
B. “You are the strongest person I’ve ever met.”
C. “I have tried my best. Just do what I can.”
D. “Is there anything we can do for you?”
30. What’s the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.

D 21. A 22. B

原文第三段提到“People who stay there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger.”,其中“sudden storms” 对应选项中的“Snow storms”,说明人们在北极可能面临暴风雪等问题。

A. B. C. D.
D 28. D 29. A 30. A

when“何时”、how“如何”、where“何地”均不对应“原因”。
fell down“掉落”、got back“回来”、woke up“醒来”均不符合蝴蝶的行为逻辑。
cheer up“振作起来”、give away“泄露”、turn down“拒绝”均与“解开秘密”无关。

Today, I want to talk about a wonderful animal, the African elephant. African elephants are the largest land animals. They have big ears, long trunks and strong tusks. They feed on roots, fruits and leaves, and use trunks to find food and water. They can even remember water sources in dry seasons.
Sadly, they are in danger. People kill them for ivory; their habitats are becoming smaller with less water and food. Illegal hunting and climate change also threaten them.
So we must protect elephants. We should tell others their importance, refuse ivory products and support groups saving their habitats. Together, we can help them survive.
