Plants have roots, leaves and flowers. They have seeds (种子), too. New plants grow from seeds. Some seeds fall on the ground. New plants grow next to the old plants. When plants grow this way, they are too crowded to get enough sunshine and water. So some of them die. But some plants spread their seeds even far from where they live. These seeds grow in new places. There are many ways of the seeds’ travel.
The wind helps seeds to travel. Some plant seeds have little wings. When the wind blows, the seeds fly away. Soon they fall to the ground and new plants may grow there. Some plants dry up. The wind pulls them from the ground, but they are so big that they can’t fly. They roll along the ground, dropping off their seeds.
Other plants grow near the water. Their seeds drop into the water and go away with it. They may travel many miles before they stop.
Some seeds have special parts called “stickers”. The stickers help the seeds travel far. How? These seeds wait for an animal to walk by. Then they stick into (扎进) its fur to get a free ride. Sometimes it’s a long trip. Birds carry some plant seeds to new places, too.
Seeds can’t walk. They can’t run. But they can travel with the help of wind, water and animals.

China’s Shenzhou-23 Mission: A Big Step in Space
China sent up the Shenzhou-23 manned spaceship successfully at 11:08 p.m. on May 24, 2026. A Long March-2F rocket (长征二号F型火箭) carried the spaceship into the sky from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (酒泉卫星发射中心). It flew for about 10 minutes and got into its planned space orbit (轨道) safely. This is the first of China’s three manned space tasks in 2026.
This space mission has many new and meaningful achievements. The three astronauts are Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan and Li Jiaying. Li Jiaying is the first astronaut from Hong Kong. What’s more, the team will try a hard new challenge: one astronaut will stay in space for a whole year. It will be one of the longest space stays around the world.
Scientists also made many useful changes to the Shenzhou-23 spaceship. Earlier, a window on Shenzhou-20 was broken by small space rubbish. To fix this problem, workers made stronger windows for Shenzhou-23. The new windows have three protective layers (层), so they are much safer.
Besides, the spaceship can now bring back more experiment materials to Earth. Before, it could only carry around 50 kilograms of things on the way back. Now its load is over 100 kilograms. With more space for research things, scientists can get more results from space experiments.
The successful launch shows China is making steady progress in space exploration. It also helps prepare for China’s future manned trip to the moon.
8. Why did engineers strengthen the windows of Shenzhou-23?
A. Space rubbish once damaged a window of a former spaceship.
B. The old windows could not help astronauts look outside.
C. The new three-layer windows cost much less than before.
D. People wanted to make the spaceship look more beautiful.
9. What can we know about the return load (承载量) of the spaceship?
A. It is just 50 kilograms now. B. It becomes more than twice as large as before.
C. It can carry 150 kilograms at most. D. It is only used to carry astronauts’ daily things.
10. What is one of the great difficulties for this space mission?
A. Building a new space station in space. B. Making a future trip to the moon right now.
C. One astronaut will live in space for twelve months. D. Walking in space every day during the mission.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The history of China’s space exploration. B. The meaning of the successful launch of Shenzhou-23.
C. The future plans for all Chinese spaceships. D. Different tasks of China’s 2026 space missions.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. B

Does anyone around you keep pet rocks? Yes, you read that right—pet rocks! More and more young people are falling in love with rocks. They dress them in lovely clothes and take them out to explore the big world. When I first saw pictures of these “pets”, I thought, “Wow, how cute they are!” But as I kept scrolling (浏览), I started to wonder why people would want some lifeless rocks as pets. And then it hit me: Life has changed a lot over the past few years.
We, as animals, must stay alive first. A long time ago, people spent most of their time finding food and building homes. Today, most of us don’t have to worry about those basic needs. But with all the extra free time, we aren’t really “lying flat”. Instead, we, as humans, are trying to reach a new level of survival.
This survival is about being the best among us. We work hard to become successful and rich. This puts lots of pressure on our lives. I know this very well. At one point, even my dogs went from being my best friends to feeling like time wasters. After all, they can’t help me fill my bank account (账户), can they?
The pet rocks got me thinking about what it really means to be human. Life isn’t all about making money or being successful. Sometimes, it’s just about having simple, fun moments.
I don’t have a pet rock, but I just bought an aquarium (鱼缸). I can’t wait to start keeping fish. I’ve wanted to do it for years but held back because it seemed “meaningless”.
How do you stay human? Will you also get some fish? Or maybe you can keep your own pet rocks!
12. Why does the writer begin the text with a question?
A. To explain the history of pet rocks. B. To catch the readers’ eyes and lead into the topic.
C. To directly discuss social pressure. D. To encourage the readers to keep a pet rock.
13. According to the text, why do modern humans feel pressure?
A. They spend too much time dressing up rocks. B. They focus only on basic survival needs like food.
C. They want to be the best and achieve success. D. They dislike keeping pets like dogs or fish.
14. What lesson does the writer want readers to learn?
A. Pet rocks are better than other real pets. B. Success is the only way to survive.
C. Simple joys are also important for people. D. Keeping busy to make more money.
15. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To promote the trend of keeping pet rocks as a new hobby.
B. To question why modern people feel so much pressure in life.
C. To encourage readers to find value in simple, non-productive joys.
D. To compare traditional pets like dogs with unconventional ones like rocks.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文,通过宠物石头的现象引发对现代生活压力的思考,呼吁人们享受简单纯粹的快乐。
【12题详解】
文章开篇问“Does anyone around you keep pet rocks?”引出宠物石头的话题,激发读者好奇心,从而展开讨论。
【13题详解】
由第三段“This survival is about being the best among us. We work hard to become successful and rich. This puts lots of pressure on our lives.”可知,压力源于追求成功和富有。
【14题详解】
由倒数第三段“Life isn’t all about making money or being successful. Sometimes, it’s just about having simple, fun moments.”可知,作者希望读者明白简单快乐也很重要。
【15题详解】
全文从宠物石头引出对生活压力的反思,最后建议养鱼或养宠物石头,鼓励人们享受非功利性的简单快乐。

D
