“I can do this,” I thought to myself, looking at the math test paper with the disappointing result 65. In junior high, I had been among the top students, and math was my strongest subject. I never struggled with it, and I even got full marks on some tests.
But now, as a first-year high school student at this famous school, the first math exam made me sad. The numbers on the paper seemed to laugh at me. That evening, I pushed the test paper into the bottom of my schoolbag, fearing my parents’ disappointment. In the following days, the bad feeling was always around me. I avoided the teacher’s eyes in class and buried myself in note-taking. The more I struggled alone with math, the more difficult the questions seemed.
One rainy afternoon, as I sat alone in the canteen, my math teacher, Mr. Lin, appeared. “Mind if I join you?” he asked calmly. My heart sank, ready for criticism (批评). Instead, he said, “I’ve noticed you work very hard. But sometimes, the way we learn needs to change when we come into a new stage.” He took out a small notebook across the table. “My senior-year notes,” he smiled. “I wasn’t always good at math either.”

Para.
1 I was a top math student in junior high (got full marks) but scored only 65 on the first high school math exam.
Confident → Disappointed
2 I hid the test paper, avoided the teacher in class, and struggled alone with math (the harder I tried, the more confused I felt).
Fearful → Lost
3 I sat alone in the canteen on a rainy afternoon; Mr. Lin joined me, praised my effort, mentioned adjusting learning methods, and shared his old notes (admitting he once struggled with math too).
Nervous (expecting criticism) → Touched + Hopeful

段首句是 “Holding the notebook, I felt confident again.”,可发散:
1)What did I see after opening the notebook?
2)What changes did I make in my actions?
3)Did I make any progress later?

7
1)打开笔记,看到老师标注的 “易错点 + 解题思路”,意识到要从 “死记” 变 “总结方法”;
2)主动向老师请教某道错题,老师演示 “分步拆解法”;
①避免脱离 “调整学习方法” 的核心(比如写 “突然顿悟数学变简单”,忽略方法改变的过程);
②不要新增无关人物(比如突然写 “和同学组队学习”,偏离林老师的启发);
动作描写:flipped through the notebook(翻看笔记);pointed at the marked notes(指着标注的笔记);nodded repeatedly(频频点头);grabbed my math paper(抓起我的数学卷)
情绪描写:a spark of hope lit up in my chest(心底燃起希望);my anxiety melted away(焦虑消散);a sense of clarity washed over me(豁然开朗)
环境 / 氛围:the rain tapped softly against the window(雨水轻敲窗户);the canteen grew quiet around us(食堂渐渐安静)
Holding the notebook, I felt confident again. I flipped through its pages gently—there were not only neat formulas, but also Mr. Lin’s handwritten comments like “split complex problems into small steps” beside tricky questions. I immediately pulled out the 65-point test paper from my schoolbag and pointed to a confusing wrong question, asking for his guidance. My anxiety melted away as he smiled to explain it with a simpler approach. When I left the canteen, the rain had stopped. I held the notebook tightly; this wasn’t just a pile of paper—it was a reminder that growth needs adjusting methods. In the next test, I applied the “step-splitting” trick and scored 89. As I looked at the paper, the numbers no longer laughed—they winked, like a quiet cheer for my new start.
