Step 1
Lead-in
Teacher shows pictures of two social situations:one showing a formal greeting ( bow) and one showing an informal greeting (saying "hi" and waving). Asks: "What's the difference? How would you describe these greetings?"
Students observe the pictures and respond using adjectives(eg, formal, friendly, polite, casual).
通过图片和引导性问题激活学生关于礼仪与行为描述的已有词汇,自然引出本课主题,并为本课词汇的导入做铺垫。
Step 2
Vocabulary in use
Work on 2a
1.Teacher presents the adjectives from activity 2a and elicits the negative forms for "safe" and "proper". 2.Teacher clarifies the rule: un- is most common; im- often goes before adjectives starting with m/p (eg,mature, polite); in- is another common prefix. Then guides students to complete 2a individually or in pairs.
3.Teacher invites several students to share answers.
Work on 2b
1.Teacher introduces 2b and lets students complete the sentences individually.
2.Teacher invites several students to share their sentences, and lets their partners judge if the sentences are correct.
Work on 2c
1.Teacher writes two sentences on the board: "The movie was exciting." and "I felt excited." Asks students to identify the subject and discuss the difference. 2.Teacher explains the core rule: -ing describes the thing/person causing the feeling; -ed describes how someone feels. Then, teacher asks students to complete activity 2c individually by circling the correct words.
3.Teacher has students compare answers in pairs, then conducts whole-class feedback.
Work on 2d
1.Teacher asks students to read the passage quickly for the main idea (using chopsticks properly). Then, instructs them to complete the blanks with words from the box, paying attention to the correct form (adjective VS. adverb VS. noun).
2.Teacher invites one or two students to share their answers by reading the whole passage, then gives some feedback on the students’ answers and pronunciations.
3.Teacher asks students comprehension questions: "What is bad manners?" "Why is using chopsticks challenging?" Connects the content to cultural etiquette.
1.Students complete 2a, writing down negative forms.
2.Students share their answers.
3.Students complete 2b using the correct negative adjectives.
4.Students share their sentences with the class.
5.Students analyze the example sentences.
6.Students finish 2c by circling the correct words.
7.Students compare their answers in pairs.
8.Students skim the passage and complete 2d individually.
9.Students check answers with the class by reading the passage.
10.Students discuss the questions and share with the class.
Step 3
Pre-reading
Teacher displays the subject line of 3a “Home visit—Help needed!” on the board and asks students: “If you received this email from a foreign friend visiting your family, what would you think they are worried about? Have you ever felt nervous visiting someone from a different culture?”
Students discuss in pairs for 2 minutes, then share their ideas with the class.
通过展示邮件主题,快速激发学生兴趣,引导学生联想跨文化拜访中可能遇到的问题。讨论环节激活学生已有经验,为后续学习做好铺垫。
Step 4
While-reading
Work on 3a
Fast reading
1.Teacher shows Tina’s email on the screen and explains: “Emails have different parts, just like letters. Let’s label them.”Teacher guides students to read the email quickly and identify.
2.After reading, teacher leads students to compare answers in pairs and invites several students to share their answers.
Careful reading
1.Teacher asks students to read Tina’s email carefully and poses questions:
-Why is Tina nervous?
-What does she want to know?
-What does “false impression” mean?
2.Teacher leads students to discuss in small groups and then invites some students to check answers.
1.Students read the email and label the different parts.
2.Students compare answers in pairs and share with the class.
3.Students read the email and discuss the comprehension questions.
4.Students share their answers with class.
通过可视化分析邮件结构,帮助学生系统理解英文邮件的组成部分,为后续写作环节奠定基础。
细读邮件理解内容,锻炼阅读理解。小组讨论提高解决问题的效率,为后续写作与分享预留更多的时间。
Step 5
Post-reading
Work on 3b
1.Teacher divides the class into four “Expert Groups” and assigns each group one of the four categories from 3b. Instructs: “Your group is now the expert on your topic. Brainstorm 3-5 pieces of clear, helpful advice for Tina.”
2.Teacher provides sentence starters for advice:"It's a good idea to...""You should avoid...""Remember to..."
"In China, people usually..."
3.Teacher circulates to provide support, then invites several students to briefly share their advice.
1.Students work in assigned "Expert Groups" to brainstorm specific advice for their given category.
2.Students briefly share their advice.
通过分小组“专家式”头脑风暴,高效收集关于不同礼仪主题的具体建议,为写作提供丰富、有组织的内容。小组活动促进合作学习,降低个人构思的难度。
Step 6
Pre-writing
1.Teacher presents a simple outline on the board for the reply email:
Greeting: Hi Tina, / Dear Tina,
Opening: Acknowledge her email, express enthusiasm.
Body: Address her questions one by one. Use paragraphs.
Closing: Reassure her, wish her a good trip.
Sign-off: Best regards, / Yours, / [Name]
2.Teacher asks: "Should we answer her questions in the order she asked them? Why or why not?" . Emphasizes using separate paragraphs for different topics.
3.Teacher introduces useful phrases:
Opening: Thanks for your email. / I was happy to hear from you. / Don't worry too much!
Giving Advice: I think it would be polite to... / My advice is to... / You might want to...
Closing: I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. / I hope this helps. / Feel free to ask more questions.
1.Students view and discuss the model outline.
2.Students create a quick outline for their own email, deciding what advice to include from the brainstorming session and how to organize it.
此环节是写作前的谋篇布局。通过提供清晰的回复邮件框架和功能性语言,引导学生从无序的“想法”转向有结构的“计划”,降低写作的认知负荷。学生个人制定大纲的过程,是将集体智慧内化并个性化组织的重要步骤,为独立写作搭建“脚手架”。
Step 7
While-writing
Work on 3c
1.Teacher sets writing task:
"Now, you are Yaming. It's time to write your email to Tina. Use your outline and the notes from your group."
2.Teacher plays soft and instrumental background music if appropriate.
3.Teacher circulates quietly and provides individual assistance.
4.Teacher reminds students this is a first draft. The goal is to get ideas down on paper; perfect grammar and spelling can be fixed later.
1.Students write the first draft of their email individually, based on their outline and brainstorming notes.
2.Students focus on developing clear paragraphs to address Tina's questions.
这是学生进行独立语言输出的核心阶段。安静且有支持的环境鼓励学生专注于表达内容。教师巡视提供“隐形支架”,针对个体需求给予帮助,而非打断全班的写作思路。强调“初稿”概念有助于减轻学生的心理压力,鼓励他们大胆写作。
Step 8
Post-writing
1.Teacher introduces peer review and explains its value: "Another pair of eyes can help us find mistakes and make our writing better."
2.Teacher provides a checklist:
-Does the email have all the necessary parts? (Greeting, Body, Sign-off)
-Are the ideas organized in clear paragraphs?
-Does it answer Tina's questions about gifts, manners, and topics?
-Is the tone friendly and helpful?
3.Teacher demonstrate with a volunteer or a sample sentence how to give constructive feedback.
1.Students read their partner's email carefully.
2.Students use the checklist to provide feedback.
同伴互评是过程性写作的关键。提供的检查清单将抽象的“修改”要求具体化,引导学生从内容、结构、语言等多个维度审视作文,培养他们的读者意识和批判性思维能力。同时,这个过程也是相互学习的机会。
Step 9
Summary
Teacher summarizes: “Today we learned email parts, discussed cultural manners, and wrote an advice email. Please remember: good communication is clear and polite, whether in writing or in person.”
Students think about one new thing they learned today about email writing or Chinese culture.
总结本课重点,强化学习成果,鼓励学生反思与内化。
Step 10
Homework
Level A:Make a list of 5 "Dos" and 5 "Don'ts" for table manners in your own culture.
Level B:Prepare a short dialogue (6-8 lines) between a host and an international guest. The guest should make one minor cultural mistake (eg, using chopsticks improperly), and the host should correct it politely.
Level C:Tina worries about giving a "false impression." Do you think it's more important to strictly follow another culture's rules, or to be yourself and learn from mistakes? Write some sentences giving your opinion with a reason.
