My name is Mei Ling. I’m from Singapore, a multicultural country where different cultures live together. Last summer, I visited my cousin in a small town in the United States. It was an eye-opening experience.
Before my trip, I thought I knew a lot about American culture from movies and TV shows. But I soon discovered that real life is quite different. In Singapore, we are very careful about saving face. We avoid saying “no” directly because we don’t want to embarrass others. In America, people are much more direct. They say what they think openly.
One afternoon, my cousin’s friend asked if I liked the hamburger she made. Honestly, I found it too salty. But instead of saying “no,” I said, “It’s very interesting!” She looked confused and asked, “Do you like it or not?” I felt embarrassed. Later, my cousin explained that Americans prefer honest answers. They don’t see honesty as rude.
Another difference was personal space. In Singapore, we often stand close when talking. But in America, people keep more distance. The first time I talked to my cousin’s neighbor, I stepped closer, and she stepped back. I felt hurt, thinking she didn’t like me. Later, I learned about personal space zones in American culture.
By the end of my visit, I understood these differences better. I learned to be more direct when answering questions and to respect personal space. My cousin also learned about Singaporean customs from me. We both grew from this experience.
Now I believe that cultural differences are not problems—they are opportunities to learn. When we understand each other’s cultures, we build bridges of friendship.
21.Where is Mei Ling from?
A.The United States. B.Singapore. C.China. D.The UK.
22.What does the underlined word “embarrass” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
23.Why did Mei Ling feel hurt when talking to her cousin’s neighbor?
A.Because the neighbor was rude.
B.Because she didn’t understand personal space differences.
C.Because the neighbor didn’t like her.
D.Because she couldn’t speak English well.
24.What did Mei Ling learn from her experience?
A.American culture is better than Singaporean culture.
B.She should never visit America again.
C.Cultural differences can help us learn and grow.
D.It’s better to stay in your own country.
25.Which word best describes Mei Ling’s attitude toward cultural differences?
A.Negative. B.Positive. C.Indifferent. D.Confused.
【答案】21.B 22.A 23.B 24.C 25.B

22.文中“We avoid saying ‘no’ directly because we don’t want to embarrass others.”,新加坡人不直接拒绝,是不想让别人尴尬。

In the United States, people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many other countries do so, too. It is a very good habit.
You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you something on the table, when someone opens the door for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Thank you” is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives.
“Excuse me” is another short sentence they use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you without touching you. It’s not polite to interrupt (打断) others when they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first, and then begin talking. You should also do so when you want to cough or make any unpleasant noise before others.
Let’s all learn to say “Thank you” and “Excuse me”.
26.People say “Thank you” ________.
A.only in the United States B.all over the world
C.in many countries D.only between friends
27.People usually say “Thank you” when ________.

C.say “Excuse me” D.not interrupt others
26.C 27.A 28.A 29.C 30.D
26.文章第一段提到:“In the United States, people like to say ‘Thank you’... People of many other countries do so, too.”,说明“Thank you”不仅在美国使用,很多国家的人也会用。选项“all over the world”范围过大,原文只提到“许多国家”。
27.文章第二段第一句:“You should say ‘Thank you’ when someone passes you something on the table, when someone opens the door for you...”,当有人把桌子上的东西递给你时,当有人为你开门时,你应该说“谢谢”。
29.文章第三段最后一句:“You should also do so when you want to cough or make any unpleasant noise before others.”,当你想在别人面前咳嗽或发出任何令人不快的声音时,你也应该这样做,这里的“do so”指代前面的“say ‘Excuse me’”。
30.文章第三段第二句:“It’s not polite to interrupt (打断) others when they are talking.”,所以礼貌的做法是“不打断别人”。
C
When it rains heavily, we can say, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” Well, on 29 December, 2021, the people in Texarkana, the US were experiencing the animal rain. It was raining fish.
On that day, a storm hit the place. The storm left a lot of small fish on the ground. “Fish falling from the sky is an example of the animal rain,” explained the city experts. “Although it’s not common, it can happen in certain weather if the fish are light enough.”
In fact, there have been similar reports of such strange weather throughout history. In 2017, people in California saw fish fall from the clouds over a primary school. In 1921, frogs fell from the sky over a city in Canada. Fish have also fallen from the sky at least three times in the last 30 years in Lajamanu, Australia.
Of course, the animals were not in the sky before it started raining but powerful waterspouts(水龙卷) swept them up. Waterspouts are tornadoes that form or travel over open water. The fast wind inside them lifts water up into the clouds. At the same time, some light fish or frogs are lifted up too. The wind carries the animals and water over the land. When the energy of the wind starts to fall, so do the animals and water. As a result, it “rains” animals.
31.When did the storm hit Texarkana, the US?
A.In 1923. B.In 2017. C.In 2019. D.In 2021.
32.What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A.It is common for people to experience a storm.
B.Fish falling may happen once in a while.
C.Some frogs are light enough to fall down.
D.There are many light fish in the sky.
33.Which of the following may have the similar meaning as the underlined word “throughout”?
A.Behind. B.During. C.With. D.Without.
34.Which is the right order of the events in the animal rain?
①The animal rain falls as the energy of the wind falls.
②Powerful waterspouts sweep some animals up.
③The strong wind lifts water and animals up into the sky.
④The wind carries the animals and water over the land.
A.①②③④ B.②①④③ C.②③④① D.③②④①
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.Strange “Winds” B.Strange “Clouds” C.Strange “Animals” D.Strange “Rain”
【答案】31.D 32.B 33.B 34.C 35.D

32.第二段提到“Although it’s not common, it can happen in certain weather if the fish are light enough.”
During表示“在……期间”,与throughout意思相近。
34.文章中提到“Of course, the animals were not in the sky before it started raining but powerful waterspouts swept them up”,即强大的水龙卷把动物卷起来,这是第一步,所以②在前;接着“The fast wind inside them lifts water up into the clouds. At the same time some light fish or frogs are lifted up too”,强风把水和动物带到天空,这是第二步,所以③其次;然后“The wind carries the animals and water over the land”,风把动物和水带到陆地上,这是第三步,所以④接着;最后“When the energy of the wind starts to fall, so do the animals and water. As a result, it rains’ animals”,当风的能量下降时,动物和水落下,形成动物雨,这是第四步,所以①最后,因此顺序是②③④①。
35.文章主要讲述了美国特克萨卡纳等地出现鱼从天上掉下来的动物雨现象,以及动物雨形成的原因。Strange “Rain”准确概括了文章的核心内容。

On March 15, a serious wildfire suddenly swept across a large wild forest in Yajiang County, Sichuan Province. Luckily, no people lost their lives in this terrible accident. Wildfires are really dangerous natural disasters. They can spread very quickly and burn large areas of green trees and dry grass in a short time, bringing great harm to the natural environment.

Dry plants turn easy to catch fire when they start to grow and come back to life after winter. Besides, strong winds are quite usual in spring. They make wildfires spread much faster and more widely in the open air, making it harder to put out the fire.
③ Useful ways to protect yourself from wildfires
When you meet wildfires, stay calm first. It helps you make right and wise decisions and avoid making mistakes. Always stay upwind of the fire to keep away from the smoke and flames. Move to safe places at once if the wind turns dangerous. If you are surrounded by fire, cover your body with wet clothes or a wet quilt and find places with water, like rivers or pools. Wide empty roads can also keep you away from the fire safely until help arrives.

Firefighters worked hard to put out the fires, but they were not the only heroes. In Beibei District, a large number of motorcyclists (摩托车手) played an important role in fire control.
Li Xin is the owner of a motorcycle club in Beibei District. He organized a team of 15 club members as volunteers. They transported supplies for the firefighters in Xiema Town, the centre of the local fires. “It is my honour and duty to guard my hometown,” he said.
The team members took turns using nine motorcycles to carry food, water and whatever firefighters needed. They also helped transport firefighters to certain places.
There were hundreds of motorcyclists like Li. Most of them were in their twenties. They rode on the poor mountain roads and carried a large basket full of supplies on their back. Some fell and got hurt even though they had the best motorcycle skills. Some got heatstroke (中暑) after working long hours. They didn’t have much time for sleep, but they were in high spirits at all times.

① Wildfires happen very often in spring in China
In 2023, there were 328 wildfires across our country. 147 of them broke out in March and April, making up almost half of the whole year’s wildfires. These fires not only damaged forests but also brought trouble to the lives of local people
②________
There is little rainfall in many places, especially in Southwest China, so the air and plants become very dry.
