Lena Ford was 7 when she started Arting for You. For this project, Lena collected art materials and gave them away to homeless kids in and around her hometown of Marietta, Georgia. “My grandma always wanted to give back to others,” Lena, now 15, told the reporter. “I was guided by that.”
Two years later, she started a small business called Positively Lena. It sells products with inspiring messages, including a book Lena wrote to help kids deal with hard times. “My goal is to spread positivity (积极乐观),” says Lena. She also offers workshops on creative writing and scrapbooking(剪贴簿). Part of the money she makes goes toward her charitable (慈善的) efforts.
Lena has another project: Kinship Family Initiative. She and her mom set it up in 2022. The group helps kids who are being raised by a family friend or a relative other than a parent. This cause is close to Lena’s heart. “My mom and her brothers were raised in a relative’s family,” she says. One way Lena helps is by providing “positivity bags” packed with school things and her books.
“Honestly, it makes me feel really happy,” Lena says. “And that’s why I keep doing what I’m doing: knowing that I’m making a difference and knowing that I’m making people happy.”
Kindness is powerful. Lena knows this. You probably do too. “Kindness means just making someone happy,” Lena says. “It can even be something as small as giving praise to someone: ‘Hey, your shirt looks nice.’ Something just like that can make someone smile. It doesn’t have to be something great. You can always just do something small, and it can make someone’s day.”
Lena hopes more people show kindness to others. “If we want to grow up with kind people surrounding(围绕) us, then we need to be kind to others,” she says. “You never know how you can influence someone else.”

59.How can we describe Lena?
A.Brave and patient. B.Honest and simple.

After the lunchtime rush, it’s time for the food delivery(递送) drivers to eat.
Liu Lijie, halfway through the work, usually rides to a restaurant in Beijing for his favourite choice—mutton noodle soup, for 12 yuan, 6 yuan cheaper than the regular(常规的) price.
The reduced-price meals, known as aixincan, are provided at some restaurants in large cities, home to large populations of migrant workers(农民工) who come looking for jobs.
“Life isn’t easy after I came to Beijing to work. I prefer eating aixincan since it’s both cheap and convenient,” says Liu, who arrived in Beijing two years ago from Shanxi Province.
Luo Shuai, another delivery driver, learned of Yushiji’s aixincan through his workmates and has become a daily customer at the restaurant, which serves food from his hometown, Henan. “It reminds me of my hometown,” says 27-year-old Luo.
Feng Yong, the manager of a meat pie restaurant, says the restaurant began serving aixincan to help people in need and encourage others to do the same. As a person from Shandong who moved to Beijing, he has a deep understanding of being an outsider working in a new city.
The key, he says, is to make all the customers in need feel at home. The staff(员工) do what they can to offer help and don’t ask any personal things of the customers.
“We don’t refuse them anything, just as long as they’re full,” Feng says.
86. What does Liu Lijie usually have for his lunch in Beijing?

Kindness is powerful. Lena knows this. It doesn’t have to be something great. You can always just do something small, and it can make someone’s day.”
Lena hopes more people show kindness to others. “If we want to grow up with kind people surrounding(围绕) us, then we need to be kind to others,” she says. “You never know how you can influence someone else.”
