I enjoyed being in nature. Visiting nearby natural places made me feel better when living alone in Rio de Janeiro. To find different communities that had unique relationships with nature, I moved to Manaus in the Amazon Rainforest to feel the energy of the forest and see the local people’s integration with the forest. I discovered we can have many relationships with nature that aren’t always detrimental to those places.
They took care of the land and cultivated these gardens filled with fruits and nuts we loved eating without harming the forest. I think many people unaware of how the local communities have shaped a “completely” natural space. The Amazon Rainforest is not just created by natural processes.
Doing research in the field could be a big challenge. We often went to really isolated places when doing field work in the Amazon Rainforest. We were aware that if anything happened to us, we could die. If a venomous snake were to bite you out there, you would be in a dangerous situation. We needed to manage those feelings while doing our work and collecting data.
I worked on an article about how we could engage native knowledge in conservation science. We had held small meetings with five native researchers, talking about how they viewed the Amazon Rainforest and trying to understand how we could maintain the Amazon Rainforest in the future. These conversations led me to start reflecting on how we did science.
I submitted our paper to two other scientific journals before it was accepted. At the time, I didn’t feel that the article was good enough to be published in a major scientific journal like Science. I tried other journals and was rejected immediately. My coauthors and supervisors said that we had nothing to lose by submitting it to Science. We tried again and they accepted it. That experience has showed me that we need to commit ourselves to what we think we should do. We cannot give up when it comes to science. We need determination.
4. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Similar. B. Relevant. C. Harmful. D. Beneficial.

A. Tiring. B. Risky. C. Costly. D. Demanding.

A. To reveal backgrounds. B. To establish credibility.
C. To highlight challenges. D. To demonstrate resolve.

It appears that language can have a fascinating effect on the way we think about time and space. A growing number of experts believe language can influence how we think just as our thoughts and culture can shape how language develops.
Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky, one of the pioneers of research into how language influences our thoughts, has shown that in English and many other European languages, people typically view the past as being behind us and the future in front of us. But in Aymara, spoken by the Aymara people who live in the Andes in Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Argentina, the word for future means “behind time”. And when the Aymara talk about the future, they tend to make backward gestures, whereas people who speak Spanish, for example, view the future as being ahead of them and make forward gestures.
Languages also encode time in their grammar. In English, for example, the future is one of three simple tenses, along with the past and the present — we say “it rained”, “it rains” and “it will rain”. But in German, you can say Morgen regnet, which means “it rains tomorrow” — you don’t need to build the future into the grammar. The same is true for many other languages, including Mandarin (普通话).
But does this affect how we think? In 2013, Keith Chen, a behavioral economist at the University of California, Los Angeles, set out to test whether people who speak languages that are “futureless” might feel closer to the future than those who speak other languages. And he discovered that speakers of futureless languages were more likely to engage in future- focused activities. They were 31% more likely to have put money into savings in any given year and had accumulated 39% more wealth by retirement. They were also 24% less likely to smoke, 29% more likely to be physically active, and 13% less likely to be medically obese (肥胖的). This result held even when controlling for factors such as socioeconomic status and religion.
It is becoming increasingly clear that language is influencing how we think about the world around us and our passage through it. And while being multilingual won’t necessarily make us a genius, we all can gain a fresh perspective and a more flexible understanding of the world by learning a new language.
8. What do the Aymara tend to do when they talk about the future?
A. They keep stepping forward.
B. They look backwards now and then.
C. They put their hands behind their backs.
D. They point their hand backwards as a gesture.
9. What did Keith Chen want to find out by carrying out the study?
A. How the future tense is used in different languages.
B. How language affects the speaker’s sense of the future.
C. How speakers of different languages overcome language barriers.
D. How people distinguish between “futureless” and “future” languages.
10. What can we learn about speakers of futureless languages?
A. They are anxious about their future.
B. They can hardly control their weight.
C. They look forward to their retirement.
D. They like to prepare for the future.
11. What does the author encourage us to do in the last paragraph?
A. To learn as many languages as possible.
B. To find similarities between languages.
C. To know the world better through a new language.
D. To change the way we compare different languages.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. C

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“And he discovered that speakers of futureless languages were more likely to engage in future- focused activities.(他还发现,说无将来时语言的人更有可能从事以将来为重点的活动)”可知,说无将来时语言的人喜欢为未来做准备。故选D。

For motorcycle enthusiasts, nothing beats the excitement of riding your motorcycle on the open highway with the wind on your back. With gas prices rising, riding motorcycles is economical and a much greener way to travel. Along with the benefits comes the risk of personal injury if an accident occurs. After all, you’re not protected by steel like you are while driving your car. Besides a helmet (头盔), the latest safety innovations, new airbag jeans, are personal airbags that you can wear to better protect your life.
Airbags have been protecting people in car accidents for decades. Now, a Swedish company, Mo’cycle, teamed up with an airbag technology company which previously produced upper body protection for motorcycle riders, to design and produce the airbags jeans. This kind of airbag can offer protection for the motorcycle rider’s lower body, especially the tailbone, in case of an accident. According to the company, “It reformed the airbag technology to protect the first bone of the spinal column (脊柱), because spinal column injury is the leading cause of disability among motorcycle riders.”
The airbag jeans look like conventional trousers. Its component is removable and the jeans can be washed, dried, and worn again. The jeans are made of a fabric called Armalith which is stronger and weighs less than steel. Armalith helps to prevent riders from injuries caused by force of friction after a fall. The airbags fixed into the fabric help protect the rider if he or she falls off the motorcycle. If the rider is separated from the vehicle, the airbags are touched off in seconds. That’s because the mechanism is actually a chain that connects the jeans to the motorcycle.
Mo’cycle’s airbag jeans are available on the company’s crowdfunding campaign along with an airbag shirt and a complete protection package. Obviously, they can provide protection for more motorcycle riders. Making the roads safer for them is certainly a worthy effort.
12. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To show the popularity of motorcycles. B. To stress the necessity of airbags jeans.
C. To state the importance of wearing helmets. D. To display the excitement of highway riding.
13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. The tailbone injuries are hard to identify.
B. Airbags offer overall protection for riders.
C. Mo’cycle is famous for airbag design and production.
D. The airbag jeans are based on the existing technology.
14. What is a feature of airbag jeans?
A. They lead a new fashion trend. B. They are comfortable to wear.
C. They are quick in response. D. They need fixing regularly.
15. How does the author feel about the future of the airbag jeans?
A. Indifferent. B. Uncertain. C. Promising. D. Curious.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. C

Rational Use of AI for Homework
As AI apps like DeepSeek become popular, more students turn to them for homework help. This phenomenon has sparked widespread discussion.
Some students believe that AI software has advantages. It rapidly provides accurate data and varied viewpoints, simplifying complex ideas. Yet, others think drawbacks exist. Over-reliance may hinder independent thinking. Constant use for assignments can weaken problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
In my viewpoint, students should use AI rationally as a supplement. When stuck, seek hints from AI but solve problems alone. Teachers should guide proper use and design creative homework to reduce AI dependence, which enables students to benefit from AI-learning integration.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A Mother’s Heartfelt Note of Love
Everything seemed to have changed for me when I entered high school. I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. “My brothers and sister all fit in.” I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school. “Why can’t I?”
Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle (依偎) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance? Who thought everything I did was wonderful? I didn’t bother trying to explain my unhappiness. It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word, like I did every afternoon.
Clearing off some space, I sat down at my desk. Yet another thing I wasn’t good at anymore. My grades had slipped along with my confidence. I turned to a new page in my notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. “You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the floor. I heard my mother’s voice in my head, “Why can’t you keep your room clean?”
By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled (弄皱的) paper. It gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made. Like it was proof of all my shortcomings. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of indifference, no one knew what I was really feeling. Who would want to listen?
One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. “Nothing I do is right in her eyes.” I thought. “Or anyone else’s, including mine.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I sat down at my desk, staring at those words.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room. Mom had obviously decided to clean it herself. I was surprised to see the clean floor below my bed. All the crumpled paper had disappeared. Except one. A single sheet lay in plain view. I picked up the sheet and recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting, saying “I have found that I have also been very critical of you lately. For that, I am truly sorry. I only expect that you are to be your same sweet self.”
I sat down at my desk, staring at those words. A weight seemed to lift from me. I realized that Mom still loved me the same way. When she got home, I found the confidence to let down my guard and talk to her about how I felt. She and my father teamed up to offer some ideas that might help, like joining after-school clubs. I seemed like everything changed in high school, but one heartfelt note set the stage for the rest of my teenage years.

A. Similar. B. Relevant. C. Harmful. D. Beneficial.

A. The locals’ care for nature.
B. The change of natural processes.
C. The local communities’ relationships.
D. The situation of the Amazon Rainforest.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author’s field work?
A. Tiring. B. Risky. C. Costly. D. Demanding.
7. Why does the author mention the experience of submitting the paper?

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room.
