根据第二段中的“Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation.(到目前为止,帮助有语言障碍的人交流的技术速度太慢,无法进行自然的对话)”可知,以前的技术的缺点是它们不能达到自然对话的目的。故选C。
故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back.(现在,这种读心术软件只能对训练它的有限的句子起作用。
根据文章第二段末尾的技术说明:“The team added background noise filtering (过滤) to detect heartbeat-caused signal strength changes, plus a lightweight AI model ... that reads filtered signals for real-time heart rate estimates.” D“By using AI to analyze noise-filtered signals”准确地概括了这一核心流程,即“使用AI分析经过噪声过滤的信号”,其中“analyze”一词是对原文“reads ... for real-time heart rate estimates”的精准同义转述。故选D。
故选A。
根据文章最后一段的结果描述:“It remained accurate regardless of body position or distance (up to 10 feet).”(无论身体姿势或距离如何(最远10英尺),它都能保持准确。)

F项“I have watched his face a lot, but he never seems to smile.(我仔细看了它的脸很多次,但它似乎从不微笑)”恰好描述了主人的观察行为及其结果,与前后文衔接流畅。故选F。
D项“That’s because they feel many of us human’ emotions.(这是因为它们能感受到我们人类的许多情感)”直接给出了原因,“they”指代上文提到的“dogs”,与上文衔接紧密,符合语境。故选D。
随后用“The question is not ...” G项“Instead, understanding how dogs show emotions like joy is more important.(相反,理解狗如何表达像快乐这样的情感更为重要)”完美地实现了这一转折,并直接引出了下文关于“微笑”这一具体表达方式的探讨。故选G。
B项“Therefore, it can be used as a weapon and a tool.(因此,它可以被用作武器和工具)”正是对前文“为力量设计”这一特点的功能性总结,用“Therefore”进行因果连接,逻辑通顺。故选B。

If you're visiting Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta, here are some tips to help you plan your trip.
What to wear
Desert temperatures drop at night and remain low into the morning when Fiesta-goers arrive at Balloon Fiesta Park. So dress in layers and bring a jacket. Wear plenty of sunscreen, and bring sunglasses for daybreak.
When to arrive
Crowds for popular events have neared 80,000 people. We recommend getting there early, by 5:00 a.m. for weekend morning events and 4:00 p.m. for evening events. The park gates open at 4:30 a.m. for morning events and 3:00 p.m. for evening events.
What to pack
Bring a camera, either a stand-alone camera or a phone camera. The Balloon Fiesta is the world's most photographed event for a reason. We also recommend bringing water and, for evening events, a flashlight.
Transportation
- Park & Ride. The Park & Ride service lets you beat the traffic. Tickets must be bought online. Please note that there is no Park & Ride service from Monday to Wednesday.
- Biking. The free Bike Valet (代停车) service is staffed by local bicycle group volunteers, who will help you safely store your bike once you reach the park.
- Public parking. Availability for public parking is first come, first served.
- Your hotel may also have a shuttle (班车) service to the park.
Concessions (摊位)
The Balloon Fiesta is a full-on fair that offers all types of food. You are allowed to bring in outside food and drinks, but no alcohol (酒) or glass. If you bring bags and coolers, please note that they are subject to search.
21. What are visitors advised to do?
A. Dress warmly for the event. B. Bring two cameras.
C. Buy tickets online in advance. D. Pay attention to the weather.

Halloween is coming, and seeing everyone plan out their costumes got me thinking back to my childhood and the costumes I wore. As I grew older, I started having mixed feelings about Halloween. I still like Halloween, and always love a full pocket of candy, but it's not the same excitement as when I was a kid. There's just something about being a kid that made it so much better. And for me, that something was coordinated (搭配协调的) family costumes.
It went like this: My parents would pick a theme and have each of us dress accordingly. Most of our Halloween costumes, whether family-themed or solo (单独的), were homemade. Unfortunately, I didn't always appreciate that. In second grade, I broke tradition by wanting to get a store-bought butterfly costume. I really liked that costume; it was fun to wear. But looking back on it now, I loved our homemade costumes so much more because those costumes were memorable and made with love. Being dressed up all together and having that shared experience really strengthened our family connection and made Halloween something to look forward to.
Recalling my experiences, I wondered if other families did the same. I decided to look around on some popular Halloween store websites to see if they had specific collections of family costumes. On Spirit Halloween's website, there was a group and family costume section, so that was a good sign. Also, Party City had a very large collection of family Halloween costumes, which made me even more hopeful. To confirm, I called the local Party City and asked if the staff had observed families buying costumes together. To my delight, the manager said yes! She noticed that families buy themed costumes every year.
Whether it's homemade or store-bought, it's good to know family Halloween costumes aren't dying. Although the days of coordinated family costumes for me have passed, the memories of those fun times will last forever.

Doctors at the University of California, San Francisco, in the US, have developed a piece of software that can read minds. The project, supported by Facebook, hopes to help people who, because of medical conditions, are unable to communicate with others.
Until now, technologies that have helped speech-impaired (语言障碍) people communicate have been too slow to allow a natural conversation. People find these things upsetting to use. This new way uses brain signals to change a person’s thoughts into text. When we want to speak, the brain sends signals to make the lips, jaw and tongue move in the right way to make an understandable sound. By discovering these brain signals, the new software is able to predict what a person want to say quickly enough to hold a conversation.
The brain-reading software was tested on three volunteers who could all speak like healthy people. They were being treated for epilepsy (癫痫). As part of their treatment for epilepsy, each patient had electrodes(电极) placed on to their brain. Edward Chang, whole d the study, used these electrodes to record the signals in the patients’ brains while they listened to a list of questions and answered them.
Chang and his team then built a computer program that learned to match the patients’ brain signals to the words the patients heard and the words the patients spoke. For the questions, the software matched the correct words 76%of the time. For the answers, it matched the correct words 61%of the time.
Now, the mind-reading software works only for the limited set of sentences on which it was trained. Scientists hope that this early system will help them develop a more powerful one that could understand thoughts in real time to give people their voices back. Chang said, “We as scientists should try our best to help people to bring that most important and basic human ability back.”
28.What is the disadvantage of previous technologies?
A.They couldn’t read people’s minds correctly.
B.They couldn’t make communication understandable.
C.They couldn’t serve the purpose of natural conversation.
D.They couldn’t let medical conditions change for the better.
29.How does the software help people?
A.By changing people’s mind into text. B.By sending signals to their lips.
C.By organizing conversations for them. D.By training them how to speak.
30.What can we know about the mind-reading software according to the last paragraph?
A.It has been used on a wide scale.
B.It has restored the basic human ability.
C.It still has plenty of room for improvement.
D.It has enhanced human real-time conversation.
31.What is the attitude of the author towards the mind-reading software?
A.Favorable. B.Objective. C.Intolerant. D.Doubtful.

Today’s Wi-Fi signals mainly transmit (传输) data, but a California team has unlocked a creative new use for heart rate monitoring with Pulse-Fi, a technology that outperforms existing methods by being low-cost, easily deployable (易部署的), and free of body-worn devices. Led by Katia Obraczka, a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Pulse-Fi addresses problems in current solutions. Obraczka notes that continuous heart rate tracking helps spot health issues like stress, dehydration, and cardiac disease, but wearables are uncomfortable and costly. Camera-based contactless tracking, meanwhile, fails in bad lighting and risks privacy.
To solve this, Obraczka worked with her lab’s postdoc Nayan Sanjay Bhatia and high-school intern Pranay Kocheta. “Pulse-Fi uses ordinary Wi-Fi to monitor heartbeats without contact, detecting tiny signal waveform changes caused by heartbeats,” she explained. The team added background noise filtering (过滤) to detect heartbeat-caused signal strength changes, plus a lightweight AI model (runnable on devices like Raspberry Pi) that reads filtered signals for real-time heart rate estimates.
The team tested Pulse-Fi in two experiments, as detailed in a study presented at the August 2025 International Conference on Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things. First, seven volunteers sat 1–3 meters from two ESP32 microcontrollers running Pulse-Fi, with results compared to pulse oximeters Second, Raspberry Pi-based Pulse-Fi monitored over 100 participants in positions like walking, running in place, sitting, and standing.
Results showed Pulse-Fi performed on par with other reference sensors, with an error rate under 1.5 beats per minute — better than many vital-sign technologies. It remained accurate regardless of body position or distance (up to 10 feet). Inspired by this, Obraczka’s team plans to launch a company to commercialize the technology.
32. What may be a strength of Pulse-Fi?
A. It doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi. B. It protects user privacy well.
C. It doesn’t touch users’ skin. D. It treats mental diseases.
33. How does Pulse-Fi improve heartbeat detection?
A. By reading sound wave changes. B. By working with phone cameras.
C. By offering a quieter environment D. By using AI to analyze noise-filtered signals.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about regarding the experiments?
A. Their processes. B. Their principles. C. Their applications. D. Their participants.
35. What do we know about Pulse-Fi’s test results?
A. It works best when users sit still. B. It functions well in diverse cases.
C. It is less accurate than oximeters. D. It needs more volunteers for tests.

A woman who owned a tailless (无尾的) dog asked me, “My dog doesn’t have a tail to move back and forth to tell me whether he is happy or not. 36 I wonder if I am failing to recognize some hidden signals that might actually be a doggy smile.”
The issue is not whether or not dogs feel emotions. Charles Darwin wrote much about animal emotions and singled out dogs as examples. 37 Nobel Prize winner Konrad Lorenz also observed the broad range of emotions in dogs.
All of these researchers concluded that dogs have most of the same emotions that humans do, including fear, anger, sadness, and joy. The question is not whether dogs experience emotions, since that seems to be a scientifically accepted fact. 38 Would this show up as a facial signal, like the smile of a human?
In fact, there is a limitation on the range of facial expressions produced by dogs. This is because dogs have a muzzle (鼻口部) whose construction is different from that of our mouths. All vertebrate animals (脊椎动物), except humans, have muzzles. Aided by powerful muscles, the muzzle is designed for strength rather than flexibility. 39
40 As a result, the muscles that give strength to the muzzle also limit the control and flexibility of the dog’s mouth area. The reduced flexibility of a dog’s mouth area limits the variety of facial expressions that dogs can make with their mouths.
A. My friends say their pet dogs smile obviously.
B. Therefore, it can be used as a weapon and a tool.
C. Strength and flexibility often work against each other.
D. That’s because they feel many of us human’ emotions.
E. This means a dog’s “smile” is not a sign of friendliness.
F. I have watched his face a lot, but he never seems to smile.
G. Instead, understanding how dogs show emotions like joy is more important.
