Aiming to foster students’ critical thinking about AI and deepen their understanding of technological impacts, the Student Union organized a debate on “AI, our friend or our enemy?” last weekend.
The debate kicked off with two teams presenting their arguments. The pro side emphasized that AI enhances learning efficiency and provides convenient solutions for study. The con side argued that relying on AI too much might weaken independent thinking. Both teams exchanged ideas fiercely, analyzing the benefits and challenges of AI application.
The activity was well-received by all participants. Not only did it broaden students’ horizons on AI, but also it encouraged them to balance AI use with independent thinking.

When her name was called, Anna’s heart nearly stopped. She walked toward the microphone. Fifty or so faces looked up at her expectantly. For a terrifying moment, her mind went completely blank. Then she found Sarah in the crowd—just as promised, grinning like a fool, giving her two thumbs up. Anna let out a shaky breath and began to play. The first few notes came out right. Her voice, when it came, was soft but steady. She closed her eyes and let the music take over. She was just singing, the way she did in her apartment with only Sarah listening. When the song ended, there was a moment of silence.
Then Sarah jumped to her feet, clapping and cheering. “That’s my girl!” she shouted, her voice cutting through the applause. The rest of their friends joined in, cheering and whistling loudly. Soon the whole room was applauding, hands clapping together in a warm wave of sound. Anna’s face turned bright red, but she couldn’t stop smiling. She made her way back through the crowd, accepting small nods and kind words from strangers. When she slid into the chair next to Sarah, she immediately threw an arm around her shoulders. “I told you,” Sarah whispered. “I told you they’d love you.” Anna leaned into her friend, still trembling, but this time with joy rather than fear.
A篇
根据Safety warning中的“Do not use this product if you have ever had a bad reaction to paracetamol or any other ingredients used in these tablets, such as milk products, povidone, or sugar.(若你曾对对乙酰氨基酚或本药片的其他任何成分,如奶制品、聚维酮或糖,产生过不良反应,请勿使用本产品)”可知,对奶制品类食物过敏的人需避免服用该药物。故选B。

根据文章标题Drug Facts (药品说明)和倒数第二段“Store the medicine in its original package in a dry place at a temperature below 30°C.(请将药品置于原包装中,存放在干燥、温度低于30摄氏度的环境中)”可推断,这类药品说明类文本最有可能出现在药品包装上。故选D。

根据第二段中“Thanks to two digital services that deliver poetry right to my email inbox, it’s been an easy decision to keep.(多亏了两项直接将诗歌推送到我电子邮箱的数字服务,这个习惯才得以轻松坚持。)”

根据最后一段中“Reading at least one poem a day has also been like an intellectual vitamin, giving me a brief taste of literature even on busy days.(每天至少读一首诗就像一种智力维生素,即使在忙碌的日子里,也能让我短暂领略文学的魅力。)”以及“Now, deep in summer, I wonder if I could ever do without it.(如今盛夏已至,我都不知道自己还能否离得开它。)”

根据第一段“Yet this common plant has greatly changed from an ignored weed to a biological superstar due to scientists’ foresight, continuous exploration and joint efforts.
32. B根据第二段Christia Brown的观点“children’s recognition of gender is more due to adults pointing it out than any inborn awareness of it.”(儿童对性别的认知更多源于成人的指出,而非天生的意识。)
33. C根据第三段:“can lead to imbalanced development in boys and girls”(导致发展不平衡)和第四段:“impact how children see themselves... influence on what that child decides to study in school and ultimately choose as a career”(影响孩子如何看待自己……
34. A根据第五段:“there’s still work to do to challenge the stereotyped ways that toys are often packaged and promoted.”(仍有工作要做,以挑战玩具通常包装和推广中的刻板方式。)
35. B根据最后一段:“toys will stop being broken up by gender and will instead be categorized by type... they would come in every color of the rainbow.”(玩具将不再按性别划分,而是按类型分类……
36.根据上文“In the Paris Olympic Games, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan realized one of the most outstanding achievements in running history. On the biggest stage in sports, Hassan competed in three events — running two rounds of the 5,000-meter run, the 10,000-meter run, and the marathon — over nine days.(在巴黎奥运会上,荷兰运动员哈桑取得了跑步史上最杰出的成就之一。在体育的最大舞台上,哈桑参加了三个项目的比赛——两轮5000米跑、10000米跑和马拉松——历时九天)”可知,上文讲述了比赛的过程,本句为本段最后一句,故说明比赛最终的成果。故B选项“最后,她获得了三枚奖牌”符合语境,故选B。
37.根据上文“Well, what led to her success?(那么,是什么导致了她的成功?)”可知,上文询问了她成功的原因,并且接下来的段落开头是“As a matter of fact, patience is also a feature of a good life beyond sports.(事实上,除了运动之外,耐心也是美好生活的一个特征)”表明耐心与她的成功有关。
38.根据上文“I used to run by a field in the winter months that had a sign that read(我曾经在冬天的几个月里跑过一块田地,上面写着)”以及下文“I laughed at that sign, positioned on a barren (荒芜的) field. But as spring approached, the day arrived when I would run past the field, and, suddenly, it was no longer barren. It was full of wildflowers of various colors and shapes.(我笑了笑那个牌子,它位于一块贫瘠的田地上。但是随着春天的临近,当我跑过田野的时候,突然间,它不再是贫瘠的了。那里开满了各种颜色和形状的野花)”可知,上下文是关于田野里的一个标志。在后面的文本中,描述了冬天荒芜的田野在春天如何变成了开满野花的地方。故A选项“野花正在生长”符合语境,故选A。
39.根据上文“The flowers had been there all along, in various stages, from seed to blossom (开花), making progress beneath the dirt. Patience is a lot like a wildflower field.(这些花一直在那里,从种子到开花,处于不同的阶段,在泥土下生长。
40.根据本段内容“Philosopher Matthew Pianalto calls patience a foundational virtue. He cites a well-known saying that patience is the root and guardian of all the virtues. Stated differently, it is difficult to be loving, courageous, or wise without patience.(哲学家马修·皮亚纳托称耐心是一种基本的美德。他引用了一句名言:耐心是所有美德的根源和守护者。换句话说,如果没有耐心,就很难有爱心、勇气或智慧)”可知,本句引出耐心与其他美德相关且支撑其他美德的观点。故E选项“耐心也支持许多其他的美德”符合语境,故选E。

People are always surprised to learn that forecasters aren't just involved in weather reporting on T. V, but they could also work at a radio station too. I often get asked how I got interested in weather, believe IT or not. As a teenager, I became nervous of thunder storms, and i'd often check the forecasts to see if any were coming from there. My interest developed, if you are thinking of going into weather forecasting, there are some important skills you need. You have to be good at science. Of course, the essential thing is having the ability to make sense of persons. You won't go too far wrong with that. Another useful scale is being able to translate a forecast into something people at home can understand. Most weather experts study physics and math before going on to do a more specialized course in forecasting. My own way in was somewhat different. As I did a business degree before getting into television as a researcher. I moved around quite a lot at the T. V station and eventually ended up in the weather department where I did my training. Last April, after I published an essay about poetry as part of National Poetry Month, an editor told me he’d often thought that the world would be a better place if we had a poem delivered to our doorstep each morning instead of a newspaper. As a newspaperman, I’m not ready to discourage readership of each day’s edition, but maybe there’s something to be said for reading a newspaper and a poem each morning.
All of that has led to a small experiment. In an effort to keep a little poetry in my life long after National Poetry Month had passed, I decided to read at least one poem a day after reading through the newspaper over breakfast. Thanks to two digital services that deliver poetry right to my email inbox, it’s been an easy decision to keep.
Many public radio listeners are familiar with The Writer’s Almanac, a five-minute broadcast hosted by Garrison Keillor that airs on lots of stations around the country. Each day’s edition includes a handful of facts about literary anniversaries, along with a short poem that Keillor recites. Fans can also have the text of each program emailed to them every day, along with a link to the broadcast recording.
The Academy of American Poets has its own poem-day feature, called “Poem-a-Day”. Launched during National Poetry Month in 2006, Poem-a-Day highlights new and previously published poems by contemporary poets on weekdays and classic poems on weekends.
Since subscribing to both services last April, I’ve enjoyed receiving poems each morning. Reading at least one poem a day has also been like an intellectual vitamin, giving me a brief taste of literature even on busy days. Last April, I wondered if I could remind myself to read a poem each morning. Now, deep in summer, I wonder if I could ever do without it.
24. What did the editor think of poetry?
A. It could improve our daily life. B. It was as important as newspapers.
C. It had a small but faithful readership. D. It should be composed in the morning.
25. How did the author conduct his experiment?
A. By listening to radios and writing emails.
B. By contributing poems to a newspaper.
C. By creating resolutions over breakfast.
D. By making use of online services.
26. What can be learned about The Writer’s Almanac?
A. It is available nationwide on radio stations.
B. It mails paper poems to its fans daily.
C. It provides recordings of classic poems only.
D. It focuses on introducing new poets daily.
27. What does the last paragraph reveal about the author?
A. It has taken years for him to love literature.
B. He is wondering how to continue his conduct.
C. He has developed a deep appreciation for poetry.
D. It has benefited him a lot as a newspaperman.
C
Arabidopsis thaliana (拟南芥), a small thin weed of the mustard family, never seemed likely to gain scientific fame. Yet this common plant has greatly changed from an ignored weed to a biological superstar due to scientists’ foresight, continuous exploration and joint efforts.
Arabidopsis’ journey began with young geneticist George Rédei. At first, his research on this weed was widely doubted because many thought only valuable crops or decorative plants were worth studying. But he carried its seeds all the time and later continued research in the US. Inspired by German botanist Friedrich Laibach, he saw its value as a model organism, similar to fruit flies in genetics. Compared with corn and wheat, Arabidopsis has clear advantages: small size, short growth cycle, many seeds, but what sets it apart from other experimental plants is its only five pairs of chromosomes (染色体), making gene location much easier.
In the 1980s, young scientists like Chris Somerville and Elliot Meyerowitz also noticed its potential. They proved its value through experiments, finding its small genome(基因组) with little repeated DNA made gene discovery easier. In 2000, a global team finished its research and published the result in Nature, which provided a solid base for future studies.
Today, researches on Arabidopsis have provided important support for crop output expansion, ecological system management and climate change reduction. For instance, the genes identified in Arabidopsis have helped scientists understand the fruit development mechanism of tomatoes and improve the stress resistance of rice.
Beyond plant science, Arabidopsis has also brought new insights to human health research. Notably, about 70% of human cancer-related genes and genes related to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s all exist in this plant.
Arabidopsis is not without limitations. Its simple structure, while useful for genetic research, cannot fully represent the complexity of crops like wheat or corn. However, even with these concerns, this once-ignored weed has already proved that great scientific value can lie in the most unexpected places, and it continues to inspire researchers to explore the mysteries of life.
28.What is special about Arabidopsis as a model organism?
A. Its abundant seeds. B. Its brief life period.
C. Its few chromosomes. D. Its unique outer shape.
29.What can be inferred about the Arabidopsis research?
A. It threw new light on medical studies. B. It preferred traditional model organisms.
C. It gained support from most geneticists. D. It targeted major management problems.
30.What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. To prove the complexity of Arabidopsis. B. To stress the limitations of Arabidopsis.
C. To restate the importance of Arabidopsis. D. To underline the structure of Arabidopsis.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Applications of Arabidopsis Studies
B. The Link between Arabidopsis and Humans
C. The Discovery of Small Genome in Arabidopsis
D. The Course of Arabidopsis from Weed to Treasure
D
A girl who turns up to school dressed head-to-toe in pink will probably pass unnoticed. If a boy does the same, he will definitely face stares. Even the most non-traditional parent would think twice about exposing their son to that.
Children start paying attention to gender differences much earlier than some parents realize, according to psychologist Christia Brown, “Society emphasizes that gender is important really early in a kid's life,” she says. “We label it a lot in our language—we use gender as nouns all the time. So we frequently say ‘oh, there’s that girl’ or ‘come on boys, let’s go get in the car.’” Research suggests children’s recognition of gender is more due to adults pointing it out than any inborn awareness of it.
Gendered toys credit certain types of skills and strengths to one gender or the other. So, when a child only plays with toys marketed for their gender, they learn a certain set of skills but do not engage as much in other types of learning. This can lead to imbalanced development in boys and girls as they grow older.
The biggest concern around buying gendered toys is that they can impact how children see themselves. Gendered representation imposes (强加于) society’s ideas of what they should like and do instead of letting them choose for themselves what their interests and hobbies are. This can have influence on what that child decides to study in school and ultimately choose as a career.
Many retailers have made real progress over the last few years, dropping gender labels in stores and online — a new research shows a 70% decrease in the use of online gender navigation options since 2012 — but there’s still work to do to challenge the stereotyped(老一套的) ways that toys are often packaged and promoted.
Researchers hope that one day, toys will stop being broken up by gender and will instead be categorized by type, like puzzle toys, dolls or children's bikes. There would still be dress-up dolls and monster toy trucks in that world, but instead of being just pink or blue, they would come in every color of the rainbow. Toy choices should be based on kids’ personal interests, and not on their gender.
32. What does Christia Brown say about gender differences?
A. They are probably unnoticed.
B. They are socially constructed.
C. They are biologically determined.
D. They are widely acknowledged.
33. What aspects of children are negatively affected by gendered toys?
A. Their academic performance. B. Their interpersonal relationship.
C. Their behaviors and attitudes. D. Their physical strength and fitness.
34. What should we put efforts to change?
A. How the toys are marketed. B. Where the toys are sold.
C. When the toys are rolled out. D. Who the toys are targeted at.
35. What do the researchers expect of future toys?
A. They should be colourful. B. They should be gender-neutral.
C. They should satisfy kids’ tastes. D. They should cover wider categories.

Patience Is a Virtue
In the Paris Olympic Games, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan realized one of the most outstanding achievements in running history. On the biggest stage in sports, Hassan competed in three events—running two rounds of the 5,000-meter run, the 10,000-meter run, and the marathon—over nine days.
36
Early in each race, viewers may have counted Hassan out. While some runners took off quickly to claim front-running positions early, Hassan held back and conserved her energy. She waited to release her final charge right when she needed to—at the end of each race, timing things perfectly to secure a medal. Well, what led to her success? 37
As a matter of fact, patience is also a feature of a good life beyond sports. Here are some reminders about this often-underappreciated virtue.
I used to run by a field in the winter months that had a sign that read, “ 38 ”I laughed at that sign, positioned on a barren (荒芜的) field. But as spring approached, the day arrived when I would run past the field, and, suddenly, it was no longer barren. It was full of wildflowers of various colors and shapes. The flowers had been there all along, in various stages, from seed to blossom (开花), making progress beneath the dirt. Patience is a lot like a wildflower field. 39 But waiting well often involves a lot of determination and unseen work.
40 Philosopher Matthew Pianalto calls patience a foundational virtue. He cites a well-known saying that patience is the root and guardian of all the virtues. Stated differently, it is difficult to be loving, courageous, or wise without patience.
A. Wildflowers are in progress.
B. Ultimately, she secured three medals.
C. To outsiders, it can look like inaction.
D. Sometimes, patience requires preparation.
E. Patience supports many other virtues as well.
F. Patience was, of course, one of the major factors.
G. Patience is rarely celebrated in a culture that prizes speed.

Anna had always dreamed of being a singer-songwriter. Trained in classical music since childhood, she could play Beethoven on the piano with her eyes closed and had sung in countless choirs. But when it came to sharing the songs she wrote herself, her courage failed her every time. “It’s sharing a very personal part of myself,” she would explain to her best friend Sarah when Sarah asked why she never performed her own music.
One Thursday evening in early March, Anna stood outside a small cafe in downtown Chicago. Through the window, she could see the open mic(开放麦) night already in progress. A young man was playing his guitar, his voice floating out into the rainy street. Beside her, Sarah held an umbrella over both of them, rain dripping from its edges.
“You can do this. It is open to everyone,” Sarah said softly, squeezing(攥着) Anna’s hand. Her fingers were warm despite the cold rain.
For the past three days, Anna’s heart had raced every time she thought about this moment. Her chest felt tight. Butterflies danced wildly in her stomach. She had prepared carefully—performing her two original songs for Sarah at least a dozen times in their tiny apartment, sending recordings to other close friends for feedback, even attending last week’s open mic night just to observe. Still, her feet refused to move.
“I'll be right there in the front,” Sarah promised. “When you look out, I’ll be the one grinning(咧嘴笑) like a fool.” She demonstrated, and despite her nerves, Anna laughed.
Taking a deep breath, Anna pushed open the door. The warm air wrapped around her like a blanket. Sarah followed close behind, then slipped away to join the friends who had already claimed a table near the front. Anna found an empty seat near the back and ordered a coffee she didn't really want, just to have something to hold, nervously waiting for her turn.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
When her name was called, Anna’s heart nearly stopped. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then Sarah jumped to her feet, clapping and cheering.

3. W: Don’t tell me you were at the office very late last night!
M: Yeah, I had to finish that report.
W: Be careful, or you’re gonna burn yourself out.
4. W: Good morning. What can I get you today?
M: Eggs always sound good. But what do you suggest?
W: If you’re really hungry, the pancakes or pies are wonderful.
M: Hmm. I’ll have a pancake, please. And a cup of milk.
5. M: Will that be another unnecessary purchase?
W: No! It’s something I really need.
M: Why do you need another coat? You already have many coats at home.
6. W: Hi. This is Janet Sayers with Acme Supplies. We received your order yesterday. We have everything you requested except the printer. It’s currently unavailable.
M: I’m sorry to hear that. Our current machine keeps breaking down. How soon do you think you’ll have it?
W: Within a week. I can ship the rest of your order, and when the printer gets here, I’ll send it by express delivery for no extra charge.
M: That’s OK. Could you also call and let me know when it arrives on your end?
7. M: Thanks for coming to this exit interview, Echke. So let’s start with the most important question. Why did you decide to leave?
W: Well, I got a better job at another company.
M: What makes that job more attractive?
W: Well, to be honest, I’ll be doing the same work for more pay. Our pay here is below market rate, you know.
M: Yes. We’ve heard this comment from other departing employees. I’ll be sure to pass it on to management again, though. Now, please tell me your impression of your manager.
8. W: Do you know that Walt Disney won the most Oscar awards in history?
M: Yes, I do. I read the other day that he actually received a total of 26 Oscars. His first award was for the creation of Mickey Mouse. I think it was in 1932 or in 1933. And the last one was for Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day in 1969.
W: Wait a second, Tony, didn’t Walt Disney die in 1966?
M: I’m not sure of the exact year he died, but I do know he won his last award after his death.
W: That’s amazing. Well, I’m not really a fan of Mickey Mouse, but I watched Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day online with my kids last year, and I must say I really enjoyed it.
M: I agree. Of all Walt Disney films, Winnie the Pooh is my favorite.
9. W: Hello, Mr. Thompson. I’m Alexandra Jones. I want to ask you some questions about the project that you offer.
M: Yes, of course, please fire away.
W: Has the project been effective in improving the environment?
M: Yes, absolutely. We have seen great results. Last year, we planted a small field of trees, and we have been measuring their oxygen output to see the benefits that they have provided to the environment. Our current goal is to plant a lot more tree species so that we can compare the benefits of each species. In order to do this, we need to get a lot more students involved in the project.
W: Well, the project sounds fascinating. I would definitely like to be involved.
M: Absolutely. Over the years, we have received funding from private investors and from selling shares, but the biggest improvement in our research came from a government fund that we received in the first year. This has greatly improved the organization, and we have since won prizes for our research.
W: Wow, how impressive!
10. Hi, everyone. I’m a weather forecaster, which means I study what happens in the atmosphere and the weather conditions that occur on Earth. People are always surprised to learn that forecasters aren’t just involved in weather reporting on TV, but they could also work at a radio station, too.
I often get asked how I got interested in weather. Believe it or not, as a teenager, I became nervous of thunderstorms, and I’d often check the forecasts to see if any were coming. From there, my interest developed.
If you are thinking of going into weather forecasting, there are some important skills you’ll need. You have to be good at science, of course. The essential thing is having the ability to make sense of patterns. You won’t go too far wrong with that. Another useful skill is being able to translate a forecast into something people at home can understand. Most weather experts study physics and math before going on to do a more specialized course in forecasting. My own way in was somewhat different, as I did a business degree before getting into television as a researcher. I moved around quite a lot at the TV station and eventually ended up in the weather department, where I did my training.
