How to Keep Safe in the Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the home, but it is also one of the most dangerous places. Many common accidents, like burns, cuts, and fires, can happen here if we are not careful. Learning basic kitchen safety rules can help us stay away from danger.
First, always pay attention when cooking. Never leave the stove unattended (无人看管) while oil or food is heating. If you have to step away, turn off the heat first. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires.
Second, be careful with hot things. When taking hot pans out of the oven, use oven mitts (手套) to protect your hands. Keep pot handles turned inward so children cannot pull them down. Hot water and oil can cause serious burns, so keep them away from the edge of the counter.
Third, never use water to put out a grease fire. As we know, oil and water do not mix. Water will sink to the bottom of the burning oil, boil quickly, and cause the fire to spread everywhere. Instead, turn off the heat immediately, cover the pan with a metal lid to cut off oxygen, or use a fire extinguisher made for oil fires.
Finally, keep your kitchen clean and organized. Spilled water or oil on the floor can make people slip. Keep knives in a safe place, and clean up broken glass carefully. Good habits in the kitchen can keep you safe.

A. Leave the stove on so the food stays warm.
B. Turn off the heat before leaving.
C. Ask a child to watch the stove for you.
D. Open the window to let out the smell.
( ) 21. Why should pot handles be turned inward?
A. To make the kitchen look tidy.
B. To save space on the counter.
C. To prevent children from pulling hot pans down.
D. To keep the food inside hot for longer.
( ) 22. What does the underlined word “oxygen” mean in the passage?
A. A gas that helps fire burn. B. A tool used to open lids.
C. A liquid that puts out fires. D. A part of the stove.

Nowadays, drinking 8 glasses of water a day is a common goal for people who want to stay healthy. However, nutrition (营养) experts have studied how much water we really need every day. Surprisingly, it’s not as fixed as we thought.
A recent study by a team of doctors found that drinking around 1.5liters (about 6 glasses) of water a day is enough for most adults. For people who exercise regularly or live in hot areas, drinking 2 liters (about 8 glasses) a day can help them stay fit better. The experts say that listening to your body is more important than following a strict number.
The result is similar to a study published in 2023. It shows that people who drink more than 2 liters of water a day don’t get extra health benefits compared to those who drink 1.5 liters.
What’s more, drinking water at the right time matters too. For example, drinking a glass of water in the morning can help wake up your body, and drinking a small amount before meals can help with digestion (消化).
( ) 23. Why do people want to drink 8 glasses of water a day?
A. Because they want to follow the trend. B. Because they want to stay healthy.
C. Because they are always thirsty. D. Because doctors advise them to do so.
( ) 24. How much water is enough for most adults according to the study?
A. 1.5 liters B. 2 liters C. 8 glasses D. 1 liter
( ) 25. Which sentence is TRUE according to the passage?
A. More water means more health benefits.
B. Right time to drink water is also important.
C. All adults need 8 glasses of water daily.
D. Drinking more water when you exercise.
( ) 26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The more water you drink, the healthier you will be.
B. Drinking water at the right time is also good for health.
C. People who live in cold areas need more water.
D. Drinking 1.5 liters of water a day is bad for people.
