One cool autumn morning, Eric met his new roommate, Wei Ning, a Chinese student. Eric wanted to be friendly, so he opened his arms to give Wei a warm hug, a common greeting in France. However, Wei walked back, looking surprised and uncomfortable. Eric didn’t know the cultural difference and felt quite confused (困惑的). Luckily, his classmate Fu Xing saw everything and told him that in China, hugs are usually for close friends or family members. Later that day, in the lunchroom, Eric saw his teacher Miss Gao far away and he naturally called her over by crooking his finger (勾手指), just as he did at home. Miss Gao also looked surprised and just smiled. When Eric felt confused again, Miss Gao walked towards him. She then told Eric that in China, it was impolite to do this and that to greet someone politely, a handshake or a polite bow is much better. To make up for his mistakes, Eric held a small party in his room. He invited Wei Ning, Fu Xing, Miss Gao and many other classmates. They talked, laughed, and enjoyed delicious food while learning about each other’s customs. Everyone liked Eric’s kind act and they became good friends with him, including Wei Ning and Miss Gao. Mrs March immediately put some perfume on one of the handkerchiefs and put it into her pocket. Then she put on the slippers and the gloves. “Perfect!” she said. The girls spent the rest of the day preparing a play. The sisters often performed plays for their friends and they were very good at making costumes and props. A dozen(一打,十二个) girls arrived about six o’clock and took their places on the bed in the big bedroom. The play was a great success. Everybody enjoyed it very much. The girls were still laughing and clapping when Hannah came in and said, “Supper is ready.” A surprise was waiting for them on the dining room table— dishes of ice cream, pink and white, fresh fruit, cakes and real French chocolates. And in the middle of all this delicious food there were four vases of beautiful flowers. The girls couldn’t believe their eyes. “Did the fairies bring the supper?” asked Amy. “No! Santa Claus brought it,” said Beth. “Mother did it,” Meg said. “No! Aunt March sent it!” cried Jo. “You are all wrong,” said Mrs March. “Old Mr Laurence sent it.” “The Laurence boy’s grandfather!” exclaimed Meg. “Why did he do that? We don’t know him!” “Hannah told one of his servants the story of the Hummels. Mr Laurence was sorry to hear about your poor Christmas breakfast so he decided to give you a surprise.” “My mother says he’s very proud,” said one of the girls at the table. “She says that he doesn’t like mixing with his neighbors. His grandson has to stay in the house and study all day. We invited him to a party once, but he didn’t come. He’s very shy.” “I’m going to talk to him one day,” said Jo. “He needs to have some fun. D In recent years, 3D printers have mostly been used to create small, specialized items. This includes parts for cars, planes and medical devices. Clothes and foods can be 3D-printed as well. Now, more and more new companies are using 3D printing to build whole homes. Since the technology is still developing, not many homes have yet been built. However, the top companies plan to greatly increase production in the coming years. The new company Icon in Austin, Texas, made news in 2018 by completing the first permitted 3D-printed home in the US. At the time, it said the home had been built in just a day. Since then, it has been developing new technologies in robotics, software and building materials. It designed its own 3D printer and said the robot-powered machine could create buildings up to 185 square meters. The printing process uses a cement-based mixture. It is stronger and can save more money than traditional building materials. Up to now, Icon has completed 24 3D-printed homes in the US and Mexico. Among them was a community of 3D-printed homes in a poor neighborhood in Mexico. The company has also completed a series of buildings for homeless people in Austin. And it plans to open America’s first housing development of 3D-printed homes this summer. A New York company, SQ4D, also uses 3D printing technology to build homes. In February, the company showed off a 130-square-meter model home to show its printer’s abilities. SQ4D plans to sell its homes starting at $299,000. The company has even started listing the homes on the Internet selling site Zillow. Kirk Andersen is SQ4D’s director of operations. He told Reuters the 3D printer will help buyers make their own home designs easily, room by room. While 3D printing as a home-building way is just getting started, Andersen says other people in the building industry need to get ready for big changes. “This is just the beginning,” he says. 37. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To introduce small things made by 3D printers. B. To tell readers something about building homes with 3D printing. C. To describe how popular 3D products are. D. To explain why 3D printing is popular. 38. What does “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指的是)? A. The company Icon. B. A 3D printer. C. A 3D-printed home. D. Confucius believed that learning and being a good person were the most important things in life. He said everyone should try to be better. One of his most famous ideas is “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.” This means we should be kind and fair to other people, just as we want them to be kind and fair to us. He had many students. He did not just teach them facts from books. He taught them how to live a good life, how to be honest, and how to respect their parents and teachers. He said that a good leader should be a good person first, and then people would follow him willingly. His way of teaching was special. He asked questions and let his students think and find the answers themselves. This method encouraged deep thinking. Confucius’s students later wrote down his teachings in a book called The Analects (Lunyu). This book is like a collection of his words and conversations with his students.
