In college, I usually looked forward to the icebreaker games at the start of some of my classes. We’d go around the circle, tell everyone our name, year, and major, and successfully waste time on the first day of class when the professor didn’t have anything educational planned.
But the icebreakers I looked forward to weren’t happening in my science classes. Kids were in creative writing seminars. I loved the writing classes. I had no idea — and, frankly, didn’t much care — how and whether my classes would impact my career. I liked science, and I liked writing, so maybe I’d combine them, or maybe not?
But I have this fear that some science students avoid branching out, not because they don’t want to, but because they believe they’re not supposed to. They see their peers keeping their heads down, only focused on science, science, science, and they don’t want to admit loving their optional medieval history seminar and become a weirdo (怪人) in the eyes of others.
“Be well-rounded,” we’re often told. Yes, no one directly discouraged me from taking a variety of classes in college. But I can’t honestly say we always treat it that way. And although my graduate department head nicely allowed me to take writing classes, other professors didn’t share the same open-mindedness, showing disapproval or skepticism towards any outside academic interest.
The science, we’re told, either frankly or implicitly, is the important part. You got a good grade in organic chemistry? Amazing! You’re going places! The other subjects are either requirements to bear or optional activities that can be approached with minimal effort.
And it’s fine if that’s what you prefer. But take my word for it: You can be a scientist and do other things, too — and the time while you’re enrolled in school is a perfect opportunity. If you find yourself debating whether to add a little nonscience to your science training, consider your interests, and consider your bandwidth, but don’t let weird guilt hold you back.
So go ahead, add a class, and add a hobby.
4. What does the underlined phrase “branching out” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Developing new branches. B. Trying new things.
C. Pursuing new careers. D. Stepping out of comfortable zones.
5. Why do some science students only focus on their major according to the text?
A. They have no other hobbies. B. They get no support from parents.
C. They are afraid of appearing different. D. They dislike any icebreaker games.
6. What is other professors’ attitude towards taking writing classes in college?
A. Approving. B. Opposed. C. Objective. D. Tolerant.
7. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To inspire people to develop interests in science.
B. To point out the importance of writing to science.
C. To encourage science students to explore other interests.
D. To call for the diversified development of college education.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. C

根据下文“They see their peers keeping their heads down, only focused on science, science, science, and they don’t want to admit loving their optional medieval history seminar and become a weirdo (怪人) in the eyes of others.(他们看到身边同龄人都埋头苦学,一心只扑在理科学习上,于是便不敢坦言自己喜欢选修中世纪历史研讨课,生怕在别人眼里变成一个特立独行的怪人。)”可知,一些理科生不愿拓宽自己的学习涉猎范围,不是发自内心不想尝试,而是觉得自己理应专心钻研理科、不该涉足其他领域。由此可知,branching out意为“尝试新事物”。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“They see their peers keeping their heads down, only focused on science, science, science, and they don’t want to admit loving their optional medieval history seminar and become a weirdo (怪人) in the eyes of others.(他们看到身边同龄人都埋头苦学,一心只扑在理科学习上,于是便不敢坦言自己喜欢选修中世纪历史研讨课,生怕在别人眼里变成一个特立独行的怪人。)”可知,一些科学专业的学生只关注他们的专业是因为他们害怕显得与众不同。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“And although my graduate department head nicely allowed me to take writing classes, other professors didn’t share the same open-mindedness, showing disapproval or skepticism towards any outside academic interest.(虽然我的研究生系主任友好地允许我上写作课,但其他教授并没有同样的开放心态,对任何外部学术兴趣都表示不赞成或怀疑。)”可知,其他教授对大学上写作课的态度是反对的。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“You can be a scientist and do other things, too… don’t let weird guilt hold you back(你完全可以既做科研、当理科人才,也去发展其他爱好……别让莫名的愧疚感束缚住自己。)”和最后一段“So go ahead, add a class, and add a hobby.( 所以大胆去尝试吧,多选修一门课程,多培养一个爱好。)”可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是鼓励科学专业的学生探索其他兴趣。

Two new studies have been added to the evidence that drinking a little alcohol each day is good for the heart. Earlier studies have shown that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol reduces the chances of suffering a heart attack or a stroke caused by thickening of the blood.
The new studies were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. One group of researchers were from a medical center in Boston. They questioned almost two thousand patients in forty-five hospitals who had just suffered heart attacks. The researchers asked them how much alcohol they drank in the year before the heart attack. Those who had fewer than seven alcoholic drinks a week were considered light drinkers. Those who had more than seven drinks a week were considered moderate drinkers.
The researchers studied the patients’ health for the next four years. At the end of that time, the light drinkers had a twenty-one percent lower chance of dying from a heart attack than those who never drank at all. The moderate drinkers had a thirty-two percent lower chance of dying than those who never drank. The drinkers survived mostly because they had fewer additional heart attacks.
The other study involved more than two thousand older men and women. Their average age was seventy-four. Researchers asked them how much alcohol they drank and studied the health of these people for up to fourteen years. They found that those who had one or two drinks each day were twenty to fifty percent less likely to develop heart failure than those who did not drink.
Both studies found no difference in survival among people who drank beer, wine or liquor.
Doctor Klatsky, a heart doctor in Oakland, California, said both studies strengthen the idea that drinking a small amount of alcohol each day can protect the heart. Alcohol thins the blood and prevents clots (血块) that block arteries (动脉). It also increases the so-called good cholesterol (胆固醇) in the blood that helps keep arteries open.
8. How did the study by the group of researchers from a medical center in Boston get its findings?
A. By questioning. B. By using examples.
C. By doing an experiment. D. By comparing.
9. What do we learn about moderate drinkers?
A. They had fewer than seven alcoholic drinks a week.
B. They suffered from fewer additional heart attacks than those who never drank.
C. They had more wine than beer and liquor.
D. They had a thirty-two percent lower chance of dying than light drinkers.
10. What is NOT the benefit of drinking a little alcohol each day?
A. It thins the blood and prevents clots that block arteries.
B. It prevents people from suffering from diseases and makes people live longer.
C. It increases the so-called good cholesterol in the blood that helps keep arteries open.
D. It reduces the chances of suffering a heart attack or a stroke caused by thickening of the blood.
11. As for the opinion of the author, what should you do for your grandpa who often drank too much before?
A. Let him be to make himself satisfied.
B. Forbid him to stop drinking.
C. Encourage him to drink for drinking is anyway good.
D. Don’t let him stop drinking and develop a good habit of drinking.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. D

At a large forest park in eastern Beijing, 11 birds on the state -level protection list were recently released, which owed to Beijing’s big step in wildlife protection.
These birds had recovered after the Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued and took care of them. “We will speed up our efforts to push the establishment of district-level wildlife rescue centers to guard the health of wildlife,” said Mr. Du, director of the center. The center was set up in 2001 and built a wildlife rescue base in the capital’s Shunyi District in 2005. Staff at the base have rescued and rehabilitated over 30,000 wild animals in total.
Wildlife protection has been strengthened in Beijing in recent years. On June 1, the city’s newly adopted regulation (法规) on wildlife protection took effect, introducing stricter and more concrete measures to protect the environment and wildlife. For example, the regulation states clearly that Beijing bans hunting throughout the year, compared with the previous regulation which bans hunting during the periods of March to May and September to November each year. The new regulation also gives more serious punishment for illegal hunters.
After years of monitoring, the species and quantity of wild animals in Beijing are continuously increasing, with the number of terrestrial spinal wild animals (陆地脊椎野生动物) growing from 461 species in 1994 to more than 500. The habitat of the endangered bird has expanded from Fangshan District to the whole city.
“The enforcement of the new regulation marked a new stage in Beijing’s wildlife protection work,” said Mr. Du.“We will step up the publicity of the regulation and raise citizens’ awareness of wildlife protection,” Du said. “In our protection of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands. we take into full consideration the requirements of ecological corridor construction (生态走廊建设), food- chain construction and wildlife and their habitat protection.”
12. What has the wildlife rescue base done?
A. It has sped up its efforts to recover the birds.
B. It has built a large forest park in eastern Beijing.
C. It has saved lots of wild animals in need of help.
D. It has established district-level wildlife rescue centers.
13. What is the effect of the new regulation?
A. It bans hunting in Beijing all the year round.
B. It sets up nationwide wildlife rescue centers.
C. It raises people’s awareness of wildlife protection.
D. It monitors the wildlife protection for a long time.
14. Which of the following statements did Mr. Du agree with?
A. Beijing will enter a new stage after taking the regulation.
B. Beijing citizens need to know more of the new regulation.
C. Food-chain construction needs the whole society’s attention.
D. The natural environmental conditions are not considered yet.
15. What could be the best title of the passage?
A. Wildlife and Their Habitat Protection in Beijing
B. Beijing’s Newly Adopted Regulation on Wildlife Protection
C. Beijing’s Big Progress in Wildlife Protection with New Regulation
D. The Establishment of Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. C

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段中的““We will step up the publicity of the regulation and raise citizens’ awareness of wildlife protection, ” Du said.( 杜说:“我们将加强该规定的宣传,提高公民保护野生动物的意识。”。)”可知,进一步加大新规的宣传力度,说明北京市民对新规还不熟悉,由此可知,Mr. Du赞成“北京市民需要对新规多加了解”这一观点。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“At a large forest park in eastern Beijing, 11 birds on the state -level protection list were recently released, which owed to Beijing’s big step in wildlife protection.(在北京东部的一个大型森林公园,最近公布了11种国家级保护名单上的鸟类,这归功于北京在野生动物保护方面迈出的一大步。)”可知,在北京加大野生动物保护力度的新规生效以来,取得了一定的成效,结合第三段中的“On June 1, the city’s newly adopted regulation (法规) on wildlife protection took effect, introducing stricter and more concrete measures to protect the environment and wildlife.(6月1日,我市新通过的野生动物保护条例生效,为保护环境和野生动物引入了更严格、更具体的措施。)”和最后一段中的““The enforcement of the new regulation marked a new stage in Beijing’s wildlife protection work,” said Mr. Du.(“新规定的实施标志着北京野生动物保护工作进入了一个新阶段,”杜先生说。)”以及全文对野生动物保护情况的介绍可知,北京制定新规加大保护野生动物保护的力度,所以该文的题目是“北京野生动物保护新规取得重大进展”既体现了文章的主题,也概括了文章的主要内容。故选C项。

Eco-Society
【答案】Notice: Let’s Care for Our Campus Friends
Recently, we have witnessed a sharp rise in the number of stray cats on campus. While these furry friends brighten our days, too many cats mean big troubles: kittens fighting over food, leftovers attracting pests, and scared cats accidentally scratching students passing by.
Here’s how we can help! By contacting local cat shelters and donating to them, we’ll get these cats properly housed. What’s more, it would be better if you can adopt one, which gives them a cozy home and keeps our campus cleaner. Plus, joining our “Cat Guardians” team to tidy feeding spots and watch for sick cats makes a huge difference!
Let’s act now! Message me if you’d like to do something. Your kindness matters to everyone — both humans and cats!

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them to improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
David was determined to help that boy due to his own life story.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The mother felt ashamed when hearing that.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
David was determined to help that boy due to his own life story. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when hearing that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
David was determined to help that boy due to his own life story.
