Sam and Tom were twins. They were so alike that even their mother found it difficult to tell one from the other. However, they were very different from each other when it came to everything other than their appearance. Sam had no friends, while Tom was a great friendship maker. Sam loved sweets, but Tom loved spicy food and detested sweets. Sam was Mommy’s pet and Tom was Daddy’s pet. While Sam was generous and selfless, Tom was greedy (贪婪的) and selfish!
As Sam and Tom grew up, their father wanted to share his fortune equally between them. However, Tom did not agree and he argued that whoever proved to be stronger and cleverer would have to get a bigger share of the wealth. Sam agreed. Their father decided to organize a competition. He asked them to walk as long as they could, and return home before sunset. The wealth would be divided according to the distance covered. But they were not allowed to carry a watch to keep track of the time.
The following day, Sam and Tom set out to walk. It was a rather sunny day. Sam walked slowly and steadily, while Tom broke into a sprint (全速奔跑) as he wanted to win so much. Sam knew that it would be ideal to walk as far as possible till noon and start for home at noon as it would take the same amount of time to walk back home. Knowing this, Sam decided to turn back for home at noon so as to reach home on time.
However, Tom, with his greed to earn more wealth, did not try to return home even after mid-noon. He walked twice as long as Sam, and thought he would still be able to return home before sunset. Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay stands as a shining example of the nation’s promise to bring nature into city living. This groundbreaking project, built in 2012, shows how creative design and green living can appear at the same time in a busy central city.
The project covers 101 hectares of recovered land and features three waterfront gardens: Bay South, Bay East, and Bay Central. The centerpiece, Bay South, is home to the famous Supertree Grove, a collection of gardens that reach heights of up to 50 metres. These Supertrees not only serve as sightseeing wonders but also play an important role in the park’s sustainable ecosystem (可持续生态系统) by collecting rainwater, producing solar energy, and providing living areas for local high land wildlife. Besides, the Cloud Forest is a wonderful glass dome (圆顶) that houses a 35-metre-tall mountain covered with plants and an eye-catching indoor waterfall. Visitors can start a journey through the forest, learning about the local biodiversity.
As Gardens by the Bay continues to grow, there are exciting plans for development in the works. Future projects may include new garden exhibits, interactive equipment, and better sustainability ways. The gardens aim to remain at the leading position of creative green spaces, inspiring visitors with new experiences and educational chances.
One wisdom from the project is the importance of teamwork between various groups of people. The Singapore government worked closely with builders, engineers, and environmentalists to ensure that the design was not only attractive but also ecologically sound. The method drove the application of modern technologies, which allow for the plantation of various plants from different climates.
The gardens utilize rainwater gathering, solar energy, and natural airing to reduce energy and water usage. Moreover, the project stresses the value of public partnership. It also encourages visitors to connect with nature and understand the importance of biodiversity. This has led to increased community cooperation and a greater love for the environment.
28. What does the Gardens by the Bay project show?
A. How city planners can use modern technology.
B. How citizens grow more plants in limited space.
C. How Singapore includes green living into a city.
D. How Singapore spreads its city planning experience.
29. What is a function of the Supertree Grove?
A. It supports the park sustainability.
B. It is home to the waterfront gardens.

SpaceX Starship test launch in October 2024 marked another milestone for the world’s largest and most powerful rocket. But additional data collected indicates Starship may be even more damaging to local communities and wildlife than critics previously feared.
According to datasets published, the 30-story-tall Starship’s 33 engines generate anywhere between 105 and 125 decibels (分贝) during its liftoff and landing, which is powerful enough to cause structural damage to buildings. Gee, a professor in Brigham Young University, detected those sound levels roughly six miles away. “This is the largest rocket ever built. It would stand to reason that it would also produce the highest level of noise among all rockets ever constructed.” Gee said.
Gee stresses that although researchers often measure noise using decibel levels, there are other measurements for sound. So he believes it’s best to assess Starship’s loudness by comparing it to other understandable quantities. On the quieter end, Starship’s liftoff may sound similar to an average rock concert. At its loudest that noise is equal to hearing a close range gunshot,
According to environmental engineer Roesch, the “raw power output” from Starship’s Super Heavy rockets has increased 30 percent since the FAA’s initial risk review in 2019, an amount expected to grow over future launches. Roesch calls past assumptions by the FAA “not only factually laughable based on an understanding of basic physics” but contradictory to NASA’s decades of Acoustic Modeling document. “No bird egg will survive that kind of impact. More deaths for animals are not accounted for in the FAA’s risk assessment.”
Gee declines to offer a personal opinion regarding SpaceX’s ongoing Starship launch schedule, and believes humanity’s future may require space travel. In the meantime, he hopes the new data will inform policy and regulatory decisions. “We are talking about levels that people found unacceptable before,” he says.
32. How did Gee conclude SpaceX’s rocket would be the loudest ever built?
A. He measured the decibel levels directly.
B. He calculated the rocket’s engine power.
C. He checked all the datasets published.
D. He inferred from the rocket’s dimensions.
33. Why does Gee mention gunshot?
A. To indicate possible damage. B. To describe noise levels vividly.
C. To measure sounds accurately. D. To make readers amused.
34. What did Roesch think of FAA’s assumptions?
A. Factual but contradictory. B. Optimistic but simple.
C. Illogical and inaccurate. D. Irrelevant and outdated.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Environmental impact of SpaceX’s Starship launch.
B. Fair prospects for SpaceX’s Starship project.
C. Technical drawbacks of SpaceX’s rocket engines.
D. Animal injuries during SpaceX’s launches.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
As we become increasingly aware of the impact our actions have on the environment, more and more of us are looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Throughout a given trip, both big and small decisions you make can affect a lot the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) produced by your holiday. 36 ? Here are some tips on enjoying a “green” holiday.
·Keep it light on luggage (行李). Every single extra kilo you carry around drives up emissions. 37 Packing (收拾行李) with purpose can actively cut your carbon footprint. So you can travel with a more thoughtful, lighter bag. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.
·Explore with care. 38 . Instead of fighting traffic, you might find hidden treasures by chance, and you’re more likely to meet new people. This habit can connect you with the city you’re visiting and help you know the city better.
· 39 . Be a big believer in asking questions, especially when it comes to a hotel’s impact on people and the planet. Ask your hotel to share how it sources renewable energy, saves water, and manages waste. If the hotel can’t show proof of similar action, keep digging. The more we, as tourists, ask similar questions, the more the industry will move toward responsible practices.
·Do your part to protect the local community. Volunteer for a beach clean-up, join a reforestation project, or just pick up rubbish as you travel. Even such small efforts can help protect natural beauty for future generations. 40 .
A. Your actions make your trip meaningful long after you’ve gone home
B. Changing from taxis to bikes means you’re kind to the environment
C. What’s more, it slows you down when you explore a new city
D. So how can we make a difference when heading on holiday
E. Do something big to make others aware of the problem
F. What do you think of the benefits of them
G. Ask about your hotel’s carbon footprint

Mom’s Decision to Spend More Time with Son
One sunny afternoon, young Timmy sat on the front steps of their cozy house, his chin (下巴) resting on his hands, eyes fixed on the street. His friends were playing in the park across the road, their laughter filling the air, but Timmy didn’t join them. He was waiting for his mom to come home.
Timmy’s mom, Mrs. Thompson, was a hard-working real estate agent (房地产经纪人). She was constantly on the go, showing houses to clients, attending meetings, and working late into the night. Most days, Timmy only saw her in the early morning rush before school or briefly in the evening when she was too tired to do much more than give him a quick hug.
That day, when Mrs. Thompson finally pulled up in her car, she noticed Timmy’s sad expression. As she got out of the car, Timmy ran up to her, his eyes lighting up for a moment. “Mom, can we play a game today? Like we used to?” he asked hopefully. Mrs. Thompson looked at her watch and sighed. “Not today, honey. I have so much work to do. Maybe tomorrow.” Timmy’s shoulders slumped, and he quietly walked back to the steps.
That evening, as Mrs. Thompson sat at her desk, going through piles of paperwork, she couldn’t get Timmy’s disappointed face out of her mind. She realized that she had been so focused on her career that she was missing out on her son’s childhood. After much thought, she made a decision. She would take some time off work to be with Timmy.
The next morning, Mrs. Thompson called her boss and explained the situation. To her relief, her boss was understanding and gave her a week off. She then went to Timmy’s room with a big smile on her face.
She said, “Timmy, I’m going to take a whole week off work, just for us!” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
