第二节:书面表达 (满分20分)
I’m honored to contribute to “Tianjin Stories” with the theme “Hands That Speak History”.
As a Tianjin local, I think of Clay Figure Zhang and Yangliuqing New Year Woodprints. Unlike machine-made products, their works are hand-made: Clay Figure Zhang’s vivid figures record old Tianjin people’s daily life, while Yangliuqing prints carry traditional good wishes, preserving the city’s history and culture.
To help you learn more about the stories behind these handcrafts, I strongly recommend the documentary Master of Time, which shows Chinese craftsmen’s lifelong dedication and persistence in inheriting traditional skills.
As for me, these “slow handcrafts” are never outdated. They are precious cultural treasures that connect our past and present. We should protect and inherit them, so that more people can hear the history told by these warm, skillful hands.

SickKids High School Volunteer Programs
SickKids offers dynamic programs tailored for high school students eager to make a difference. Whether during the summer break or the academic year, these initiatives provide an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and contribute to our community in meaningful ways.
The Summer Volunteer Program
This program provides two main types of roles to meet different interests. First, in Hospital Support roles, students assist in services like the Family Centre or Gift Shop to help create a warm atmosphere. Alternatively, those in Child Life roles engage in play activities and assist in keeping a safe playroom. Note that volunteers in Child Life roles must be willing to put on necessary equipment, such as masks and clothes, as many placements require entering isolation rooms (隔离室).
The Co-op Program
Unlike the summer option, this program offers Grades 11 and 12 students the chance to get involved in health-care or research careers during their regular school terms. Students earn academic credits while participating in hands-on positions that may include office work, interacting with patients, or doing research in the Hospital and Research Institute.
Qualification Requirements
To be considered for either program, applicants must meet specific criteria. You must be currently a high school student and be at least 16 years old by the start of the program. For the Summer Program, volunteers must commit to working three hours every weekday (Monday to Friday) throughout July or August. Due to the program’s intensive nature, we are strictly unable to accommodate absences. Therefore, please consider any personal conflicts, such as summer courses or family vacations, before applying.

Zhu Yancheng, a native of Anhui province, has founded Lanvita, an AI-driven memoir (回忆录) platform for the elderly.
The seed of Zhu’s startup was planted by a personal experience. “My father was eager to keep his memories safe. Soon, the process of organizing everything on a computer — which he wasn’t used to — proved a real challenge and began to wear him out.” Zhu recalled. Her father’s difficulty made Zhu wonder how many other seniors shared this wish but were held back by technology.
To test this assumption, she carried out a survey. The results revealed that 27.8 percent of surveyed seniors are willing to purchase memoir products for themselves, while 30.7 percent of adult children intend to buy them for their parents. “What began as a personal goal for my father was, in fact, pointing toward a wider social phenomenon.” she said.
With a background in AI, Zhu developed Lanvita as a WeChat mini-program. To bridge the digital gap, she then cooperated with local communities, nursing homes, and other institutions to host offline trial sessions, allowing seniors to experience the memoir-creation process firsthand and receive completed versions of their stories shortly afterward.
One participant who left a strong impression on Zhu was 89-year-old Gong Guoping. Gong has lived through a life full of ups and downs, including war and major family changes, while also witnessing the development and transformation of Hefei, where he has spent his whole life. “Through Mr. Gong’s eyes, the memoir goes far beyond a personal story, becoming a historical mirror that reflects the century-long transformation of his hometown.” Zhu said.
Zhu believes that meaningful products can only be created by engaging directly with elderly users and truly listening to their stories. “Face-to-face, offline services are far more effective than endless online advertisements,” Zhu noted.
After the trial sessions, many seniors recommended Lanvita to friends, helping the platform grow. Through her interactions with seniors, Zhu found that although older adults may adopt AI more slowly, they are still curious and willing to try new technologies. “In this field, what we truly need is not necessarily smarter AI, but more understanding AI,” she concluded.
31.What directly drove Zhu to create the platform Lanvita?
A.Her professional background in AI. B.A request from local nursing homes.
C.A survey on senior consumption habits. D.Her father’s struggle with digital tools.
32.Which of the following best describes the findings of Zhu’s survey?
A.There is a widespread demand for memoir products.
B.Technology remains a major barrier for most seniors.
C.Adult children use more memoir products than seniors.
D.Seniors prefer WeChat mini-programs to computer software.
33.What does Zhu realize from Mr. Gong’s memoir?
A.The historical record of urban development.
B.The great suffering caused by wars and conflicts.
C.The link between personal stories and history.
D.The difficulty for seniors to recall their youth.
34.What can be inferred about Lanvita’s operation?
A.It includes high-level AI knowledge from its users.
B.It acquires users via offline service and trial sessions.
C.It focuses on seniors with advanced computer skills.
D.It relies on online advertisements to attract elderly users.
35.What message does Zhu want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.AI should be designed with a human touch.
B.Seniors can master new technology with ease.
C.Technology will soon make eldercare simple.
D.Smarter AI will decide the future of eldercare.
【答案】31.D 32.A 33.C 34.B 35.A
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了朱艳成创立AI驱动的老年人回忆录平台Lanvita的初衷、发展过程及运营理念。
31.细节理解题。根据第二段““My father was eager to keep his memories safe. Soon, the process of organizing everything on a computer — which he wasn’t used to — proved a real challenge and began to wear him out.” Zhu recalled. Her father’s difficulty made Zhu wonder how many other seniors shared this wish but were held back by technology. (朱回忆道:“我父亲渴望保存他的记忆。很快,在电脑上整理所有东西的过程——他不习惯——被证明是一个真正的挑战,并开始让他筋疲力尽。”。她父亲的困难让朱想知道有多少其他老年人也有这个愿望,但却被技术所阻碍。)”可知,朱艳成创建Lanvita平台的直接原因是她父亲在使用数字工具时遇到困难。故选D项。
32.细节理解题。根据第三段“The results revealed that 27.8 percent of surveyed seniors are willing to purchase memoir products for themselves, while 30.7 percent of adult children intend to buy them for their parents. Many of the drugs we take aren’t actually digested — they pass through our bodies, and down through the sewer (下水道) pipes. Traces of those drugs end up in the bodies of fish and other wildlife. Nobody’s sure what effect they have.
Now, a paper being published in Science magazine finds that drugs to treat anxiety can affect the behavior of fish.
This particular story starts with some fish that live in a creek just downstream from a sewage treatment plant in southern Sweden. Scientists collected the perch (鲈鱼) in that area and discovered that they had accumulated low levels of anxiety drugs in their bodies.
Environmental scientist Jonatan Klaminder led a couple of his workmate at Umea University in Sweden to tackle this question in the lab.
In the lab, they put some perch in a fish tank to see how they behaved under normal circumstances. Then they added some of a anxiety drug called oxazepam into the tank. The concentrations (浓度) of the drug were the same to those found in the river.
“They became more unsociable and more active, and they were actually more effective in eating,” Klaminder says. “This drug actually removes some of the fear, the sense of fear, from these fishes. So instead of being afraid they focus on feeding.”
Staying close to others is a well-known defense system to avoid natural enemies. In the wild, it is highly dangerous for a small fish to move away from the fish group. “The most likely outcome will be that a bigger fish will eat it,” he says. Over time, the whole food chain will be changed.
The problem doesn’t present an obvious threat to people who might drink water from streams or eat the fish that live in them. The presence of drugs in surface waters — or even in fish and shellfish — is much lower than the levels that you might need to be concerned about, says Bryan Brooks of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, USA.
But he warns that isn’t necessarily the case in the developing world. “Some studies show, for example, some rivers in India have the highest concentrations of drugs in the environment,” he says. “So the developing world really deserves some additional attention.”

A.They ate much less food.
B.They spent more time alone.
C.They helped each other when feeding.
D.They worried more about their enemies.
39.According to the research, the anxiety drugs in rivers ________.
A.reduce the number of wild perch
B.make large fish calm down easily
C.have deadly effect on small perch
D.help wild fish become much healthier
40.In the opinion of Bryan Brooks, ________.
A.drugs in rivers may be a threat to developing countries
B.it is quite safe to drink water with anxiety drugs in India

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I never used to think of myself as a liar. I always saw myself as an honest person. The only time I’d ever shift from the truth was to protect someone’s feelings. “But that wasn’t really lying,” I would tell myself. “It was an act of kindness!”
And then I had a therapy session (一次治疗), where I realised that all of this was actually people-pleasing behaviour and it turned out I was a productive liar. Not only that, but according to my therapist, by constantly hiding my true feelings to protect those I loved, I was hindering them from ever getting to know the real me and creating true closeness. I knew something had to change. So, in that moment, I promised I would never tell another lie again. Not a single one. Even a white lie.
It was particularly hard at the start. It would take me hours to reply to a “do you fancy a coffee?” text when my answer was “no.” But gradually, I realised I didn’t actually know what they wanted to hear, and I never had done at all. Because more often than not, I’d cancel friends’ plans and instead of being disappointed, they’d be thrilled, replying: “Oh great, I wasn’t feeling up to it either!”
By telling the truth, I wasn’t, as I had falsely believed before, pushing people away until I was left completely alone (my greatest fear). If anything, I was becoming closer to those I really connected with, and gently letting go of those I didn’t. Some did initially struggle because they weren’t used to my honesty. But slowly, people began to express their gratitude for my newfound honesty.
Complete honesty isn’t for the faint-hearted (胆怯的) — I’ve had to face my greatest fears and feel the shame, guilt and discomfort that arise from having difficult conversations—but it’s one of the greatest joys I’ve ever discovered.
41.What did the author think of her lying at first? (no more than 10 words)
42.When did the author decide to make a change? (no more than 8 words)
43.What does the underlined phrase “hindering them from” mean in paragraph 2? (no more than 3 words)
44.What was the false belief the author used to hold according to paragraph 4? (no more than 12 words)
45.What is your opinion on white lies? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
【答案】41.She thought it was an act of kindness. 42.During a therapy session. 43.stopping them from 44.Telling the truth would push people away and leave her alone. 45.I think white lies are acceptable as they are often told to protect others’ feelings or avoid unnecessary conflict.
根据第一段中““But that wasn’t really lying,” I would tell myself. “It was an act of kindness!”(“但这并不是真的在说谎,”我会告诉自己。“这是一种善意的行为!”)”可知,作者一开始认为自己的撒谎是善意的行为。故答案为:She thought it was an act of kindness.
42.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“And then I had a therapy session (一次治疗), where I realised that all of this was actually people-pleasing behaviour and it turned out I was a productive liar. Not only that, but according to my therapist, by constantly hiding my true feelings to protect those I loved, I was hindering them from ever getting to know the real me and creating true closeness. I knew something had to change.(然后我进行了一次治疗,在那里我意识到所有这些实际上都是取悦他人的行为,结果发现我是一个“多产的骗子”。不仅如此,据我的治疗师说,我不断地隐藏自己的真实感受来保护我所爱的人,这阻碍了他们了解真实的我,也无法建立真正的亲密关系。我知道有些事情必须改变)”可知,作者是在一次治疗后决定做出改变的。故答案为:During a therapy session.
43.考查词句猜测。根据第二段中“Not only that, but according to my therapist, by constantly hiding my true feelings to protect those I loved, I was hindering them from ever getting to know the real me and creating true closeness.(不仅如此,据我的治疗师说,我不断地隐藏自己的真实感受来保护我所爱的人,这hindering them from了解真实的我,也无法建立真正的亲密关系)”可知,作者不断地隐藏自己的真实感受使得所爱的人无法了解真实的自己,也无法建立真正的亲密关系,故划线词组意思是“阻止某人做某事”。故答案为:stopping them from。
44.考查细节理解。根据第四段中“By telling the truth, I wasn’t, as I had falsely believed before, pushing people away until I was left completely alone (my greatest fear).(通过说实话,我并没有像我以前错误地认为的那样,把人们推开,直到我完全孤独(这是我最大的恐惧))”可知,作者曾经错误地认为说实话会推开人们,让自己完全孤独。故答案为:Telling the truth would push people away and leave her alone.
45.考查开放问答。我认为善意的谎言是可以接受的,因为它们通常是为了保护他人的感受或避免不必要的冲突。故答案为:I think white lies are acceptable as they are often told to protect others’ feelings or avoid unnecessary conflict.

【答案】

Application Information
The Summer Program runs in two separate sessions: July 2-31 and August 1-31. However, applications for both months must be submitted online in March. The program is highly competitive, with around 400 applicants competing for only 50 summer spots.
