To Rehan Staton, his childhood was a life of privilege — loving parents, a supportive big brother and a pleasant, private school education. Everything changed when his mother left the country and his father lost his job.
He had to sleep with a heavy jacket on when it was cold. He was always hungry. He said he couldn't concentrate at school and would sleep during class. He went from straight. As to near the bottom of his class. A teacher told him he needed special education, which made him hate school.
Staton spent his high school years as an excellent athlete, raining to become a professional boxer. He had won a lot of martial arts competitions. But a tragedy struck him in his senior year when Staton suffered serious tendonitis (肌腱炎), in both shoulders. He couldn’t lift either arm for months. His dream of becoming a professional player failed. He struggled to apply to colleges but was refused by all of them.
Staton’s body slowly recovered from martial arts and he got a job as a rubbish collector. Many co-workers couldn't help but ask him a simple question, “What are you doing here? You’re smart. You are too young to be here. Go to college.” It was the first time someone outside his family had spoken highly of his intelligence. It was the co-workers that emboldened him to return to school.
Several co-workers put Staton in touch with a professor at Bowie State University. The professor was impressed with their conversation and persuaded the admissions board to change its former decision.
Going to college forced Staton’s older brother, Reggie, to drop out. They both knew someone had to be working full time along with their dad. It was a decision Reggie made on his own.
After receiving a 4.0, Staton succeeded in becoming a student at the University of Maryland. But he still had a long way to go to attend Harvard Law eventually...
24. What finally changed Rehan Staton’s happy childhood?
A. His brother’s losing the job.
B. His serious health problem.
C. His father’s sudden death.
D. His mother’s leaving the country.
25. What does the underlined word “emboldened” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Force. B. Direct. C. Encourage. D. Accompany.
26. Why did Staton’s elder brother have to drop out of school?
A. He wanted his brother to study further.
B. His father asked him to leave school.
C. He had lost interest in most lessons.
D. He had to go out to find his mother.
27. What will the writer mainly talk about next?
A. What Rehan Staton planned to do after entering Harvard.
B. How Rehan Staton managed to be admitted to Harvard.
C. Why Rehan Staton decided to choose to go to Harvard.
D. When Rehan Staton would be successful in Harvard Law.

We know that smartphone addiction is real, and that it can affect lives in negative ways. While some people have tried going cold turkey (快速戒掉坏习惯) or even punishing themselves for using their mobile phones, an app is made available in the UK that rewards people for staying away from their devices.
The app, called Hold, was created by Norwegians Maths Mathisen, Florian Winder, and Vinoth Vinaya while they are studying at Copenhagen’s Business school to help break fellow students’ attachments to their devices. The three college students found that positive reinforcement (强化) was the best way of beating smartphone addiction. Hold allows students to collect points for staying off their devices between the hours of 7 am and 11 pm; they get 10 points for every 20 minutes.
Through partnerships with universities and businesses, points can be used for discounts on everything from cinema tickets to Amazon goods to cafe food and drink. A half price cinema ticket, for example, costs 60 points, or 2 hours away from a phone. And a £5 ($6.88) Amazon voucher (代金券) needs 1,000 points, or 33 hours off your smartphone. Students can also use their points to buy school books and stationery (文具), which are then donated to schools partnered with children’s charity UNICEF.
Over 120,000 people use the app in Scandinavia, including 40 percent of higher education students in Norway, where Hold first came onto market in February 2016. It’s now available to students from over 170 universities in the UK.
A 2017 University of Texas study claimed that merely placing a smartphone in someone’s line of sight slowed down their productivity, response time, and reduced their grades. An earlier study from the London School of Economics found students who didn’t use smartphones on school grounds saw their test scores increase 6.4 percent.
28. What can we learn about the app Hold?
A. It promotes online sales of goods. B. It finds new uses of mobile phone.
C. It earns discounts on goods or services. D. It helps students put down their smartphones.
29. How long should a student stay off the mobile phone to get 300 points?
A. 6 hours. B. 10 hours. C. 15 hours. D. 30 hours.
30. What can be inferred from the Hold app’s popularity in Scandinavia and availability in the UK?
A. Smartphone addiction is a widespread problem across different regions.
B. Students in Scandinavia and the UK are more receptive to new apps.
C. The app’s developers have a strong business network in these areas.
D. Positive reinforcement is more effective in Western countries.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To tell the story of Hold creation. B. To show people’s opinions of Hold.
C. To give a brief introduction of Hold. D. To attract potential customers to Hold.
D
While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice.
When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn’t,” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot? It sounds like music from the future!
But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The godfather of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz developed EMI — Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.
AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it? Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer. And I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: Can we reproduce creativity using a computer?
Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.
32. What plays an important role in producing PROTO?
A. Holly’s special voice. B. The input of existing music.
C. Holly’s rich knowledge. D. The use of an instrument.
33. Why does the author mention the example of Miquela Sousa?
A. To promote deep thinking on AI musicians.
B. To show the popularity of smart robots.
C. To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists.
D. To make comparisons between human and robotic artists.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards music co-created by AI and humans?
A. Doubtful. B. Surprised. C. Confused. D. Confident.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The increasing diversity of AI music. B. The development of musical composition.
C. The history of computer-generated music. D. The combination of AI and musical composition.

Ten-year-old Josh came from a poor family. His mother was a part-time cleaner and his father fixed small appliances for his neighbors. Though the family’s clothes were faded and patched (打补丁的), and the rent was a constant worry at the end of the month, Josh’s parents always taught him that honesty cost nothing but was worth everything.
One afternoon, Josh walked his bike to old Mr. Black’s repair shop. The chain was broken again, and Mr. Black, who was familiar with their struggles — charged only two dollars for the repair. Before Josh left, Mr. Black warned that the frame was nearly worn out. Josh thanked him and promised to ride carefully.
On the way home, Josh discovered something at the bus stop — a thick envelope half-buried in snow. He picked it up and took a look inside. His eyes widened. It was full of cash, more money than he’d ever seen: Hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands.
His first thought was about his mother’s worn-out shoes and the rent that was due. He could slip the envelope into his jacket, and no one would know. But then he remembered his father’s words: “We might be poor, Josh, but we must be honest.” His heart raced as he weighed the wrong that was easy against the right that was hard. Then he sat down on the frozen bench, holding the envelope tightly, and waited.
An hour passed, then two. Josh’s toes grew numb (麻木的) as the setting sun painted the sky orange and pink. Occasionally, strangers walked by, eyeing him curiously, but he just held the envelope tighter. A woman asked if he was okay, but he simply shook his head and stayed put. His nose was red from cold, and he shivered uncontrollably, but he didn’t move. Finally, just as Josh began to worry about his parents’ concern, a black car stopped. Then a man named Eason in a suit jumped out, urgently scanning (察看) the ground.

【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. B
【解析】

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段第二句“Everything changed when his mother left the country and his father lost his job. (当他母亲离开了这个国家,他父亲失去了工作,一切都变了)”可知,改变了Staton的美好童年的是突如其来的家庭变故:母亲的离家出走和父亲的失业。故选D。

【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段第二句“They both knew someone had to be working full time along with their dad. (他们都知道,必须有人全职陪着他们的父亲工作)”可知,他们都知道必须有人和他们的父亲一起全职工作(才能保证另一个顺利完成学业)。由此推知,Staton的哥哥是为了让他的弟弟能继续学习辍学了。故选A。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段第二句“But he still had a long way to go to attend Harvard Law eventually... (但要想进入哈佛法学院,他还有很长的路要走……)”可推知,作者接下来可能会描写Staton是如何在非常困难的情况下成功地考进哈佛法学院的。故选B。

【答案】28. D 29. B 30. A 31. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Hold这款帮助人们戒除手机瘾的应用程序及其作用、积分使用和受欢迎情况。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The app, called Hold, was created by Norwegians Maths Mathisen, Florian Winder, and Vinoth Vinaya while they are studying at Copenhagen’s Business school to help break fellow students’ attachments to their devices.(这款名为Hold的应用程序是由挪威人Maths Mathisen、Florian Winder和Vinoth Vinaya在哥本哈根商学院学习期间开发的,旨在帮助同学们摆脱对电子设备的依赖)”可知,这款应用程序是为了帮助学生放下智能手机。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Hold allows students to collect points for staying off their devices between the hours of 7 am and 11 pm; they get 10 points for every 20 minutes.(Hold允许学生在早上7点到晚上11点期间远离电子设备来收集积分;每20分钟得10分)”可知,学生每20分钟得10分,那么300分需要20分钟×30=600分钟,即10小时。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Over 120,000 people use the app in Scandinavia, including 40 percent of higher education students in Norway, where Hold first came onto market in February 2016. It’s now available to students from over 170 universities in the UK.(在斯堪的纳维亚半岛,超过12万人使用这款应用程序,其中包括挪威40%的高等教育学生,Hold于2016年2月首次在挪威上市。现在,英国170多所大学的学生都可以使用这款应用)”可推知,Hold应用程序在斯堪的纳维亚半岛和英国的流行表明,智能手机成瘾是一个在不同地区普遍存在的问题。故选A。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是文章第一段“an app is made available in the UK that rewards people for staying away from their devices.(在英国,一款应用程序应运而生,它奖励那些远离电子设备的人)”可知,文章主要介绍了Hold这款帮助人们戒除手机瘾的应用程序,故文章的主要目的就是简要介绍Hold这款应用程序。故选C。

【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. D
根据第二段“The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI).(该过程需要输入人工或人工智能(AI)创作的音乐数据)”可知,现有音乐的输入在产生原型中起着重要的作用。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer. And I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: Can we reproduce creativity using a computer?( Miquela Sousa是一个电脑生成的艺术家,在Instagram上有超过一百万的粉丝。“我是一名模特兼歌手。我是一个机器人,”Miquela说。这就提出了一个问题:我们能用电脑重现创造力吗?)”可推知,作者提到Miquela Sousa的例子是为了促进对AI音乐人的深度思考。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. 76. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something. The man rushed over, explaining it was his workers’ payroll — eight hundred dollars. When Josh held out the envelope, the man collapsed in relief, and then he looked at the boy in wonder. Noticing Josh’s worn-out bicycle and thin coat, he insisted on driving him home. Although Josh politely refused, the man was firm because he was unwilling to let this honest child ride through the darkness and cold. During the short ride, Eason learned about the family’s struggles.
The next morning, Eason visited Josh’s house with a brand-new bicycle. He told Josh’s parents how their son’s honesty had saved his workers and his business. Josh’s mother wiped her tears while his father stood tall. Eason explained that this gift wasn’t out of pity, but out of respect for their values. Greatly moved, they finally accepted the gift. Eason also offered Josh’s father a stable job at his factory. This simple act would put an end to their rent worries, proving that honesty, even in poverty, sows the seeds of change.
