Do you ever feel like you study for hours only to forget everything the next day? This is a common struggle, but science offers a solution. German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered the “Forgetting Curve”, which reveals how information slips from our minds over time.
What is the Forgetting Curve?
The curve shows that the sharpest decline in memory occurs within the first 24 hours after learning. Without review, we typically forget about seventy percent of the new material within just one day.
How to Beat It: Spaced Repetition
To transform short-term memories into long-term ones, you should use “Spaced Repetition”. This involves reviewing material at increasing pauses to “reset” the forgetting curve.
Recommended Review Schedule:

Tips for Better Memory
·Understand, Don’t Just Memorize: It is much easier to remember information that makes sense to you.
·Use Active Recall: Instead of just rereading your notes, try to summarize the main ideas from memory.
·Prioritize Sleep: Your brain strengthens memories while you sleep, making rest a vital part of the study process.
By matching your study habits with the way your brain naturally works, you can save time and achieve better results with less effort.
21. How much information can we remember after a day without review?
A. About 20%. B. About 30%. C. About 70%. D. About 80%.
22. What is the main purpose of the 2nd Review?
A. To provide instant reinforcement. B. To reach a level of full command.
C. To stop information from being lost. D. To secure knowledge for the future.
23. Which is a recommended tip for improving memory?
A. Memorizing every detail by heart.
B. Making full use of time to study.
C. Repeating your notes until mastery.
D. Trying to recall what you learned.

Karlee Shivley can’t wait to step onto campus as a student at Virginia Tech this fall, but for a long time, college felt like an impossible dream. Growing up, she had few examples to guide her. Her parents never attended college, and the process seemed confusing and financially challenging.
“As a senior 2 student at Bassett High School, I really didn’t think I’d be attending a four-year university,” Shivley recalled. “I didn’t know where to start, and financially, it didn’t seem possible.” That uncertainty shaped her early high school years, limiting how far she believed she could go.
Things began to change when she became involved in TRIO, a support program. With encouragement from her advisors, Shivley started to see herself differently. “They encouraged me to push myself academically,” she said, “and showed me where to find scholarships and apply for financial aid.” More importantly, she began to believe that college was not only possible, but worth striving for.
Motivated by that support, Shivley challenged herself in ways she had never imagined. She took dual-enrollment courses, attended Governor’s School, and stayed committed to demanding academic goals. By the time she graduated from Bassett High School, she had earned an associate’s degree in science — a milestone that transformed her confidence and ambitions.
“They encouraged me to shoot for the stars,” Shivley said. And she did. This fall, she will attend Virginia Tech, majoring in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, supported by a well-known Presidential Scholarship.
Looking back, Shivley sees her journey as more than a list of achievements. The experiences reshaped how she viewed her abilities and her future. What once felt out of reach now feels earned. From doubting whether college was possible to preparing for a challenging scientific field, Shivley has proved that with the right support, the path to a brighter future is always within reach.
24. What was Shivley’s initial attitude toward attending college?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Tolerant. D. Ambitious.
25. How did the TRIO program benefit Shivley?
A. It reshaped her self-perception. B. It reduced her application steps.
C. It funded her entire college education. D. It expanded her academic perspective.
26. What does the “associate’s degree” mean to Shivley?
A. Financial freedom. B. A stepping stone to her fame.
C. Evidence of her potential. D. A shortcut to scientific fields.
27. What does Shivley’s story mainly convey?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Education begins at home.
C. Love breaks down barriers. D. One can go far with assistance.

When leaving a Marshall Islands atoll (环礁), Alson Kelen prefers to sail after sunset. Without visual clues, he relies on delicate bodily sensations to sense the movement of the sea. “That’s how the Marshallese navigate (导航),” he explains. “They navigate with their stomach.”
For thousands of years, Marshallese navigators have crossed vast stretches of ocean using a traditional technique known as wave-piloting. Rather than following stars or landmarks, they read the direction, rhythm and interaction of ocean swells (涌浪) reflected off islands. Mastering this skill requires years of observation and practice. Those who succeed earn the title of ri meto, or “person of the sea”, a role that carries both technical expertise and cultural responsibility.
In the mid-20th century, many Indigenous Marshallese communities relocated. As populations were displaced, the practice was at risk of being lost. The art survived largely through a small number of expert navigators, including Captain Korent Joel, who trained his younger cousin, Mr. Kelen, before his death in 2017.
In early August, an international research team joined Marshallese sailors on a two-day voyage to better understand the cognitive (认知的) processes behind ocean navigation and to support the preservation of this endangered tradition. Unlike navigation on land, which depends heavily on fixed visual landmarks, open-ocean travel presents a constantly changing environment, requiring a different way of sensing space and direction.
During the journey, participants regularly recorded where they believed they were and noted the perceived direction of incoming swells. Advanced instruments measured motion, eye movement and physiological responses, allowing researchers to compare embodied knowledge with scientific data. The team included neuroscientists, philosophers, anthropologists and Marshallese sailors, reflecting a collaborative approach that valued both science and tradition.
Although data analysis is ongoing, Kelen sees the project as a step toward cultural renewal. By revisiting how their ancestors survived and traveled across the ocean, he believes the Marshallese can protect a vital part of their identity. As he puts it, a navigator is not just a sailor, but a keeper of ocean culture.
28. What is emphasized about wave piloting in paragraph 2?
A. Its reliance on modern equipment. B. Its simplicity and ease of learning.
C. Its concentration on star observation. D. Its unique method and high demands.
29. Why did wave piloting nearly disappear?
A. Loss of native communities. B. Shortage of ocean swells.
C. Lack of scientific guidance. D. Competition from modern navigation.
30. What was the main goal of the research voyage?
A. To train more ri meto for the future.
B. To prove the superiority of traditional skills.
C. To document and analyze the navigation skill.
D. To find faster and safer routes across the ocean.
31. What does Kelen think of a navigator’s role?
A. The pioneer of sea protection. B. The explorer of new territories.
C. The recorder of oceanic data. D. The guardian of cultural heritage.

Dogs are known for mastering action commands like “sit” or “stay”. However, when it comes to remembering the names of specific objects — such as their favorite stuffed toys — most dogs struggle. Only an exceptional group of “gifted word-learner” dogs can remember the names of hundreds of items. While scientists have identified about 50 such dogs, the underlying mechanisms of their lexical (词汇的) ability remain a mystery.
Now, groundbreaking research published in Science is pushing the boundaries of what these extraordinary dogs can achieve. Scientists already knew these dogs could learn names during direct playtime. In the latest study, researchers from Eötvös Loránd University discovered that they can also acquire new vocabulary simply by eavesdropping.
Ten gifted dogs, including a Border collie named Basket and a Labrador named Augie, participated in the experiment. They watched their owners hold a new toy and discuss it with another person. Afterward, the dogs were asked to get that toy from a pile in another room. Remarkably, seven out of the ten dogs successfully identified the new toy by passively listening to the conversation.
“This is the first time we have seen a specific group of dogs able to learn labels from overhearing interactions,” said study author Shany Dror. The dogs even succeeded when the toy was hidden in an opaque (不透明的) box, creating a disconnect between seeing the object and hearing its name.
This ability to eavesdrop is rare in the animal kingdom, previously seen only in parrots and apes (类人猿). It is also a cornerstone of human development, as little babies often pick up words their parents never intended to teach them. However, since these dogs are fully grown, their cognitive processes likely differ from those of human children.
While your average furry friend might not be picking up names when begging for food, this research highlights the hidden cognitive depth of animals. Scientists hope to continue studying these enthusiastic subjects to uncover what makes them so special.
32. What does the underlined word “eavesdropping” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Following simple action commands. B. Learning by listening passively.
C. Interacting with other dogs actively. D. Training during direct playtime.
33. What were the dogs required to do during the experiment?
A. Play with experimenters. B. Fetch a specific toy.
C. Name unfamiliar toys. D. Follow their owners’ action.
34. What will future research focus on?
A. Comparing dogs with parrots and apes. B. Improving dogs’ ability to obey command.
C. Finding the hidden cognitive mechanisms. D. Teaching average dogs everyday vocabulary.
35. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Research: The Smartest Dogs B. Gifted Dogs: Learning by Overhearing
C. How Dogs Understand Human Commands D. Why Some Dogs Are Smarter Than Others

When I was sixteen, I was a top runner in high school until a serious injury forced me to stop. ____36____ I realized I had ignored what truly mattered while pursuing sports glory, especially my studies. Driven by a new passion, I began diving into books about brain science and how we store information. Eventually, I developed learning techniques, which changed me from an average student into a straight-A achiever.
Before revealing my approach, I must address a common trap: traditional note-taking. Many students believe that filling notebooks with beautiful handwriting is the key to success. ____37____ It prioritizes recording over understanding. If you simply follow suit, you will likely achieve only average results.
One major issue with note-taking is that it often turns into mindless copying. When you transcribe (记录) phrases from a textbook or lecture, you aren’t mentally processing the material. ____38____ Furthermore, reviewing these notes later creates an “illusion (错觉) of competence”. You mistakenly believe you have mastered the content, when in fact you are only recognizing the words.
You may argue, “____39____” That’s great in the short term, but how much of that information did you remember a week after the test? The truth is, most students get by with rereading notes, but when they face a comprehensive exam later on, they struggle.
To truly excel as a learner, you need a method that promotes long-term memory. During my college years, I looked forward to the finals week. While my classmates were stressed, attending endless review sessions, I was calm and confident. My techniques had already enhanced the concepts in my mind, so when finals came around, I passed them effortlessly. ____40____
A. However, that method is often ineffective.
B. I became fascinated by the science of learning.
C. This turning point made me reflect on my priorities.
D. Rereading is one of the least effective study methods.
E. But I got an A on my last test just by rereading my notes!
F. I’m going to share those techniques with you in the next section.
G. Information goes in one ear and out the other without leaving anything.

It snowed heavily last night, covering everything in a thick white blanket. While most people were still asleep, 13-year-old Michel was already outside, dressed in his winter coat, boots crunching on the ice, shovel (铲子) in hand. He wasn’t doing it for money. He simply remembered that the year before, Mrs. Garnier — his 84-year-old neighbor — had fallen while trying to get her mail during a snowstorm, because her driveway hadn’t been cleared. So this year, Michel decided to prevent that happening again. Without being asked, he spent over an hour clearing her steps, driveway, and sidewalk. Once he finished, he quietly went back home, not expecting her to even notice.
But the next morning, he found a box on the porch (门廊). Inside there was a freshly baked banana bread, a handwritten note, and a neatly folded envelope.
The note read:
Dear Michel,
I saw the path you carved in the snow. I cried as I watched you from the window — not because of the snow, but because, for the first time in a long time, I felt seen. Since my husband passed away five years ago, no one has helped me shovel snow. You gave me more than safety. You gave me comfort. Please accept this small gesture from me.
With affection,
Mrs. Garnier
In the envelope were a $20 bill and an old photo of her husband standing next to a young Michel — just five years old — helping him push a snowblower.
Michel’s eyes welled up. He sat on the porch steps, the photo trembling slightly in his gloved hands. He stared at the image — his five-year-old self, grinning widely, small hands resting on the handle of Mr. Garnier’s old snowblower. He had almost forgotten that day. But Mrs. Garnier had kept it, like a treasure, for eight years.
He folded the note carefully, placed it back in the box, and carried everything inside. That afternoon, he knocked on Mrs. Garnier’s door. She opened it slowly, her face lighting up when she saw him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Michel said softly, “You don’t have to give me the money.”

As a professional who helps you make informed decisions about your career path, i'm often asked, what should I major in to avoid being replaced by robots? It's a valid fear. A eye is already outperforming humans in data analysis and even basic programing. However, don't panic. AI is great at logic, but IT lacks the human touch. In the future job market, the most valued skill won't be your ability to memorize facts or calculate numbers. Instead, IT will be your emotional intelligence, the ability to understand, manage and influence emotions while AI can process information IT cannot truly empathy with a client or resolve a conflict between teammates with genuine feelings. My advice to you is not to compete with machines in areas where they are stronger, instead hook technology and use AI as a tool to free yourself from repetitive tasks. This will allow you to focus on more creative and interpersonal work. Remember, the world will always need people who can think critically and connect with others at a deep level. Finally, in this fast changing era, your most powerful weapon is lifelong learning, never stopping a student even after you graduate. Good morning, everyone.
Review Session
Timing
Primary Goal
1st Review
Within 20 minutes
Immediate reinforcement
2nd Review
After 24 hours
Plugging the “memory leak”
3rd Review
After 1 week
Consolidating (巩固) knowledge
4th Review
After 1 month
Achieving long-term mastery
B 22. C 23. D

A 25. A 26. C 27. D

D 29. A 30. C 31. D

根据第三段“They watched their owners hold a new toy and discuss it with another person. Afterward, the dogs were asked to get that toy from a pile in another room. Remarkably, seven out of the ten dogs successfully identified the new toy by passively listening to the conversation.(它们看着主人拿起一个新玩具,并和另一个人谈论这个玩具。之后,研究人员让这些狗狗从另一个房间的一堆玩具中找出那个玩具。值得注意的是,十只狗狗里有七只仅仅通过被动聆听对话,就成功辨认出了这个新玩具。)”可知,狗狗只是旁观主人和别人谈论新玩具,被动听对话就学会了物品名字。由此可知,eavesdropping意为“被动倾听学习”。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Ten gifted dogs, including a Border collie named Basket and a Labrador named Augie, participated in the experiment. They watched their owners hold a new toy and discuss it with another person. Afterward, the dogs were asked to get that toy from a pile in another room.(十只天赋异禀的狗参加了实验,其中包括一只名叫Basket的边境牧羊犬和一只名叫Augie的拉布拉多犬。它们看着主人拿着一个新玩具,与另一个人讨论。之后,狗被要求从另一个房间的一堆玩具中取出那个玩具。)”可知,实验中要求狗去取回一个特定的玩具。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“While your average furry friend might not be picking up names when begging for food, this research highlights the hidden cognitive depth of animals. Scientists hope to continue studying these enthusiastic subjects to uncover what makes them so special.(虽然你普通的毛茸茸的朋友在讨要食物时可能不会记住名字,但这项研究突显了动物隐藏的认知深度。
C 37. A 38. G 39. E 40. F
根据前文“When I was sixteen, I was a top runner in high school until a serious injury forced me to stop. (我十六岁时,是高中里的顶尖跑步运动员,直到一次严重的伤病迫使我停了下来。)”及后文“I realized I had ignored what truly mattered while pursuing sports glory, especially my studies. (我意识到,在追求体育荣耀的过程中,我忽略了真正重要的东西,尤其是我的学业。)”可知,前文提到受伤被迫停止跑步这个变故,后文作者意识到自己忽视了学业,C选项“This turning point made me reflect on my priorities. (这个转折点让我开始反思自己的优先级。)”能承上启下,衔接变故和反思。选项中的“This turning point”指代上文的受伤,“reflect on my priorities”衔接下文对学业的关注,符合文意。
根据前文“Many students believe that filling notebooks with beautiful handwriting is the key to success. (许多学生认为,用漂亮的字迹把笔记本写满就是成功的关键。)”及后文“It prioritizes recording over understanding. If you simply follow suit, you will likely achieve only average results. (它优先注重记录,而非理解。如果你只是盲目跟风,很可能只能取得普通的成绩。)”可知,前文说很多学生认为“工整记笔记”是成功关键,后文指出传统记笔记重记录轻理解、效果很差,A选项“However, that method is often ineffective. (然而,这种方法往往是无效的。)”转折衔接,点出传统方法的问题,引出后文的解释。选项中的“that method”指代传统笔记法,且呼应下文的“It”,符合文意。
【38题详解】
根据前文“One major issue with note-taking is that it often turns into mindless copying. When you transcribe phrases from a textbook or lecture, you aren’t mentally processing the material. (记笔记的一个主要问题是,它常常变成无意识的抄写。当你从课本或讲座中记录短语时,并没有在大脑中处理这些内容。)”可知,前文描述了抄笔记时没有对内容进行大脑加工的问题,G选项“Information goes in one ear and out the other without leaving anything. (信息左耳进右耳出,什么也没留下。)”生动地描述了这种“不入脑”的现象,符合语境。
【39题详解】
根据前文“You may argue, (你可能会反驳:)”及后文“That’s great in the short term, but how much of that information did you remember a week after the test? (短期内这确实不错,但考试一周后,你还记得多少那些信息呢?)”可知,这说明空格处应该是一句读者可能会用来反驳作者观点的典型话语,E选项“But I got an A on my last test just by rereading my notes! (但我上次考试只靠重读笔记就得了A!)”正好是反驳,符合作者设问的行文逻辑。
【40题详解】
根据前文“My techniques had already enhanced the concepts in my mind, so when finals came around, I passed them effortlessly. (我的学习方法已经在我脑海中强化了这些知识点,所以当期末考试来临时,我轻松地通过了所有考试。)”可知,前文作者介绍了自己的学习方法帮自己轻松通过考试。F选项“I’m going to share those techniques with you in the next section. (接下来,我将把这些方法分享给大家。)”放在末尾收尾,逻辑通顺,选项中的“those techniques”呼应上文的“My techniques”。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Michel said softly, “You don’t have to give me the money.”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, a snow-clearing activity was launched in the community.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Michel said softly, “You don’t have to give me the money.” He returned the envelope to Mrs. Garnier, his voice warm with sincerity. He explained that clearing the snow was a small gesture, nothing compared to the kindness her husband had shown him years ago. The photo and her note were the greatest gifts he could ever receive, for they reminded him of the beauty of mutual care. Mrs. Garnier smiled through tears, patting Michel’s hand gently, grateful for the young boy’s thoughtfulness and pure heart.
The next day, a snow-clearing activity was launched in the community. Michel took the lead, warmly inviting his classmates and neighbors to join him. They went door to door, helping the elderly and the disabled clear their driveways and sidewalks. Everyone worked together happily, encouraging one another as they spread kindness from house to house. The cold snow couldn’t dim their enthusiasm, and the sound of laughter and shoveling filled every corner of the neighborhood. What began as a small act of kindness soon grew into a heartwarming movement, spreading love and warmth throughout the winter.
