I’m an 18-year-old pre-medical student, tall and good-looking, with two short story books and quite a number of essays to my credit. Why am I singing such praises of myself? Just to explain that the attainment of self-pride comes from a great deal of self-love, and to attain it, one must first learn to accept oneself as one is. That was where my struggle began.
Born and raised in Africa,I had always taken my African origin as burden. My self-dislike was further fueled when my family had to relocate to Norway, where I attended a high school. Compared to all the white girls around me, with their golden hair and delicate lips, I ,a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nose often had a thin sheet of sweat on it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted to bury myself in my shell crying “I’m so different!”
What also contributed to my self-dislike was my occasional stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-confidence. It always stood between me and any fine opportunity. I’d taken it as an excuse to avoid any public speaking sessions, and unknowingly let it rule over me.
Fortunately, as I grew older, there came a turning point. One day a white girl caught my eye on the school bus when she suddenly turned back. To my astonishment, she had a thin sheet of sweat on her nose too, and it was in November! “Wow,” I whispered to myself, “this isn’t a genetic(遗传的) disorder after all. It’s perfectly normal.” Days later, my life took an-other twist(转折). Searching the internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famous people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. I was greatly relieved and then an idea suddenly hit me—if I’m smart, I shouldn’t allow my stuttering to stand between me and my success.
Another boost to my self-confidence came days later as I was watching the news about Oprah Winfrey, the famous talk show host and writer—she’s black too! Whenever I think of her story and my former dislike of my color, I’m practically filled with shame.
Today, I’ve grown to accept what I am with pride; it simply gives me feeling of uniqueness. The idea of self-love has taken on a whole new meaning for me: there’s always something fantastic about us, and what we need to do is learn to appreciate it.
45. What affected the author’s adjustment to her school life in Norway?
A. Her appearance
B. Social discrimination.
C. Her changing emotions.
D. The climate in Norway.
46. What did the author’s occasional stuttering bring about according on Paragraph 3?

B. Her loss of interest in school.
C. Her unwillingness to greet her classmates.

47. How did the author feel on noticing the similarity between her and the girl on the bus?
A. Blessed and proud.
B. Confused and afraid.
C. Amazed and relieved.
D. Shocked and ashamed.
48. What lesson did the author learn from the cases of Newton and Churchill?
A. Great minds speak alike.
B. Stuttering is no barrier to success.

A. Pride comes before a fall.

“Brain rot” is defined as the “supposed worsening of a person’s mental or intellectual state” as a result of watching too much “trivial (琐碎的) or unchallenging” content online, such as TikTok. The term is often talked about in a joking manner, but what if there’s some truth to it?
That’s the alarming implication of a new study published by scientists based at Tianjin Normal University. After scanning the brains of 111 students, researchers found that those who are addicted to short videos had more grey matter in their cerebellum (小脑), the part of the brain that plays a role in movement and emotions. It might help the brain process short video content more efficiently.
The researchers went on to perform a second scan to track the participants’ brain activity while they rested with their eyes closed. They found a greater synchronization (同步) of activity within multiple areas of the brain.
These functional brain differences might explain why people have trouble disengaging (解脱) from videos and a tendency for too much social comparison while watching them.
The finding is understandably disturbing. Yet this study must be placed in a wider historical context in which new technologies and media have always caused exaggerated neurological (神经的) concerns.
It’s nearly 20 years since The Atlantic magazine ran a cover feature that asked “Is Google making us stupid?” and the claimed answer was “Yes”. The author, Nicholas Carr, lamented that he used to be a “scuba diver in the sea of words”, but now, thanks to Google, he flies “along the surface like a guy on a jet ski”.
Neuroscientist Prof Baroness Susan Greenfield argued that the impact of digital technologies, the internet and video games on the brain, was as serious a threat to humanity as climate change.
Even if the study spotted increased synchronisation in the brain, it is neither basically good nor bad. In fact, other studies have linked increased synchronisation in certain brain regions to positive outcomes, such as those observed in meditation training.
Taken together, these issues suggest we shouldn’t be overly concerned that TikTok is reshaping young people’s brains in harmful ways. It’s more productive to focus on developing healthier media habits rather than worrying about brain changes or addiction.
50. For what purpose is “Brain rot” often talked about according to paragraph 1?
A. Social. B. Medical. C. Educational. D. Entertaining.
51. Which might help process content in short videos?
A. More grey matter. B. Practising scanning.
C. Movement and emotions. D. Engaging in role-playing.
52. How does the second scan differ from the first one in the study?
A. The students close their eyes.
B. The students keep watching TikTok.
C. The students can talk to the researchers.
D. The students are under closer observation.
53. A greater synchronization of activity within multiple brain areas might lead to ______.
A. better creativity B. high levels of envy
C. disturbed sleep pattern D. lower emotional intelligence
54. What can we learn from paragraph 6 & 7?
A. Nicholas Carr learnt diving online.
B. TikTok is more harmful than Google.
C. Content online might not threaten our brains.
D. Digital technologies contribute to climate change.
55. What is the author’s opinion about the “Brain rot” phenomenon?
A. Its influence are hard to analyze.
B. Meditation can ease the problems.
C. We can’t be more concerned about it.
D. Learning to use media properly matters.
D
Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: (1) They are not trained in how to be creative. (2) They don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭)their power to maximize group creativity.
A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone.
To fix this problem, you should consider the two stages of group problem-solving: divergence(分散)and convergence(集中). Divergence happens when the group considers as many different potential solutions as possible. Convergence happens when the various proposed solutions are evaluated and reduced to a smaller set of candidate solutions to the current problem.
The essential principle of group creativity is that individuals working alone diverge, whereas group members working together converge. In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly. That is why groups working together diverge less than individuals working alone.
Therefore, be aware of when to diverge and when to converge. For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem. Then get them back to discuss their descriptions. The group discussion will lead everyone to accept one or a small number of these statements to work on—this is healthy convergence.
When starting to generate solutions, you again want divergence. Have people work alone to start. Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members.
Finally, let the group discuss the resulting ideas. This discussion will gradually lead the group to converge on a small number of candidate solutions.
This simple method works effectively, because it respects what individuals and groups do best.
56. Research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods ______.
A. actually limit group creativity
B. greatly encourage group creativity
C. enable people to form more ideas together
D. prevent people’s involvement in the problems
57. According to Para. 4, when a member presents an idea, others tend to_____.
A. think the other way round
B. follow his way of thinking
C. be more confident in their own ideas
D. be less willing to share their own ideas
58. What should group members first do early in the problem-solving process?
A. Discuss the problem. B. Simplify the problem.
C. Put down group statements together. D. Write down their individual descriptions.
59. How can each group member make changes to his initial solution?
A. By adding in collected evidence. B. By reorganizing his own words.
C. By drawing on others’ ideas. D. By making his statement briefer.
60. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To advocate a way to make group thinking more effective.
B. To demonstrate the difficulty in organizing group thinking.
C. To highlight the differences between divergence and convergence.
D. To show the advantage of group thinking over individual thinking.

Not long ago, my 12-year-old son, Lucian, and I were standing on the knife’s edge. I mean this quite literally. We had just completed a four-day hike in Maine that concluded by climbing Mount Katahdin. At its highest peak, Mount Katahdi has an extremely dramatic, mile-long ridge (山脊) known as the Knife Edge. It’s scary and quite dangerous: The mountain has claimed at least 17 lives. We knew we had to be careful, but surprisingly, the danger was part of the attraction. Lucian and I were both longing for a bit of risk.
We proceeded along the ridge and Lucian moved with such agility (灵敏) and balance. Then suddenly, right in the center of the Knife Edge, we encountered a group of bushes. And that’s when a killer bee stung (蜇伤) Lucian. Lucian was pale-faced, and he told me very calmly: “Dad, this is serious. I could die.” If this were a novel, the perfectly timed disaster, and my son’s calm yet serious remark would be cut by some clever editor. But this was not a novel. It was real life.
“What’s your favorite video game?” I asked my son. He shot me a confused look. I pressed him, asking him again. Unwillingly, he began answering my question-or more accurately, he began asking me why I talked about video games at a moment like this. By the time he finished, a minute had passed. He showed no signs of having an allergic reaction. I pointed this out to him. Another minute passed. And then, unexpectedly, we realized, he was totally fine.
When we returned home, Lucian and I both recounted our adventure — to my wife, his brother, and all the grandparents — until it quickly became a family tale. And it occurred to me that on some level, Lucian and I are both fond of exploring courageously. And this is how we found ourselves at the top of Mount Katahdin, crossing over the Knife Edge.
96. What did the author and his son do in Maine? (no more than 5 words)
_______________________________________________________
97. What happened to Lucian in the center of the Knife Edge? (no more than 10 words)

50. D 51. A 52. A 53. B 54. C 55. D

根据第二段“After scanning the brains of 111 students, researchers found that those who are addicted to short videos had more grey matter in their cerebellum, the part of the brain that plays a role in movement and emotions. It might help the brain process short video content more efficiently.

结合第八段“Even if the study spotted increased synchronisation in the brain, it is neither basically good nor bad.
根据最后一段“It’s more productive to focus on developing healthier media habits rather than worrying about brain changes or addiction. (与其担心大脑变化或成瘾,不如培养更健康的媒体使用习惯。)”可知,作者认为合理使用媒体更重要。
56. A 57. B 58. D 59. C 60. A

由第二段“A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal.” 故选A项。
由第四段“ In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly.”
由第五段“ For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem.”
由倒数第三段“Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members.”
由其第一段“Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons”可知,众人不擅长创造性解决问题的原因有两个。再根据第二段“Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone”可知,不幸的是,研究表明,传统的头脑风暴方法未能实现这一目标。 故选A项。

根据第一段“We had just completed a four-day hike in Maine that concluded by climbing Mount Katahdin.(我们刚刚在缅因州完成了一次为期四天的徒步旅行,这次旅行以攀登Katahdin山结束)”可知,作者和他的儿子在缅因州进行了一次为期四天的徒步旅行。
根据第二段“And that’s when a killer bee stung (蜇伤) Lucian.(就在那时,一只杀人蜂蜇伤了卢西安)”可知,在the Knife Edge的中间位置,卢西安被一只杀人蜂蜇伤了。
根据第三段““What’s your favorite video game?” I asked my son. He shot me a confused look. I pressed him, asking him again.(“你最喜欢的游戏是什么?”我问儿子。他一脸困惑地看了我一眼。我继续追问,再次向他询问)”可知,卢西安被蜇伤后很紧张害怕,说自己可能会死,而作者问他最喜欢的电子游戏,从常理推断,作者是想通过问这个问题转移卢西安的注意力,让他不要一直想着被蜂蜇这件可能很危险的事情。
【99题详解】
考查词句猜测。根据划线词后文“our adventure — to my wife, his brother, and all the grandparents — until it quickly became a family tale(向妻子、他的哥哥以及所有的祖父母……了我们的冒险,结果很快这件事就成了一个全家共享的故事)”可知,他们回家讲述了自己的冒险。故划线词意思是“讲述”。

101. 如今,中国许多城市都投放了共享单车(shared bikes)。由于方便停放,绿色环保等原因,作为代步工具很受大家欢迎。但是,也有人对此持质疑的态度。上周,校学生会对我校学生的共享单车使用情况进行调查。请根据以下调查结果,给学校英文报写一篇有关共享单车的调查报告。要点如下:

The aim of this report is to…
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The aim of this report is to show the results of a survey on students’ opinions and usage of shared bikes in our school.
According to the survey, 70% of those asked gave a positive answer. As for the reasons, as high as 96% of them choose to use shared bikes for their convenience. The majority think riding shared bikes is cheap. Surprisingly, only around 31% consider riding as good exercise. Sadly, only a minority of the users, exactly 19%, turn to shared bikes as a way to reduce pollution.
By contrast, the other 30% said “No” to shared bikes. 70% of them refuse to use shared bikes for safety concern while the other 30% think it is uncomfortable to ride bikes because it may be too hot in summer and too cold in winter.
In my opinion, shared bikes are put there to be used. They can help us keep healthy and make the environment better as long as we use them properly and carefully.
