In fact, they are so popular that people regard them as part of ancient Chinese history and culture. What do these Chinese titles refer to? Have you ever wondered what the stories behind these titles are? Chinese people in the past or even sometimes today call their sons quanzi. When Chinese parents use quanzi to refer to their sons, they are being modest (谦逊). Although most parents do think their children are successful, they try to belittle them in front of other people. This is similar to how some rich Chinese people call their big houses hanshe, which means “my poor home”. Although people are modest about themselves, they respect others a lot. They call their own sons quanzi, but call others’ sons linglang, a respectful way to say “your son”. In Chinese, kaimo means the “role model”. Both of these Chinese characters have a “木” on their left side. People believe that kai and mo were two kinds of trees in ancient China. It was said that there were many kai trees growing near Confucius’ tomb (墓). The kai trees were so straight that they made people think of Confucius’ character — straight and honest. People believed that the mo trees grew near the tomb of the Duke of Zhou. Similarly, the color of the mo tree’s leaves made the tree a symbol of integrity (正直). Since the kai and mo trees grew near the tombs of the two respected people, kaimo was then used to refer to role models. 4. Ancient Chinese used the title ______ to introduce their son to others in a modest way. A. quanzi B. kaimo C. hanshe D. linglang 5. What does the underlined word “belittle” mean in Paragraph 2? A. Push sb. to move quickly. B. Provide sb. with some advice. C. Make sb. seem unimportant. D. Give sb. some encouragement. 6. Which of the following about kaimo is NOT true? A. It refers to the role models. B. It’s from the kai and mo trees. C. We can use it to describe honest people. D. We see it as a symbol of modesty. 7. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The importance of ancient Chinese culture. B. The meanings of different Chinese titles. C. The stories about Confucius and the Duke of Zhou. D. The ways of being a straight and honest person. C In English classes, we spend a large amount of time studying grammar and learning new words. We work hard to improve our reading and listening skills. Few of us, however, pay enough attention to body language. So body language is not important, is it? The answer is, “Yes!” As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” Sometimes, we can communicate things even without a single word. For example, shrugging (耸肩) our shoulders, and, without a word, we’ve just said, “I don’t know.” Body language can help us stress what we are saying. It can help us express our true inner feelings. Moreover, body language can help us find out if someone is lying. Often, people who are lying do not make eye contact (接触). They may turn away or raise their shoulders because they are uncomfortable with the conversation. In job interviews, the interviewers can sometimes size up the interviewee before he or she speaks. Body language is important in our personal lives, too. It can show if you really care about your friends. Leaning (倾斜) forward into the conversation, for example, means you are interested in what is being said. Listening without making eye contact means you are not paying attention but are waiting for your turn to speak. Scientists have been studying body language for a long time. They say more than 70 per cent of our messages are delivered through body language. Sometimes, body language is more exact than the words we use. So it is very important for us to learn body language. By understanding body language, we are less likely to be misunderstood. We will find it easier to get a job. We will also have lasting friendships. 8. The writer mentioned the old saying “Actions speak louder than words.” in order to show that ______. A. body language is important in communication B. it is impossible for us to communicate without using words C. we don’t need to speak when communicating with other people D. what you have said is more important than what you have done 9. According to the article, people who are lying may ______. A. sit still B. lean forward C. avoid eye contact D. shrug their shoulders 10. According to the passage, body language can help us do all the following except ______. A. do well in a job interview B. lie without being noticed C. prevent misunderstandings D. show we care about our friends 11. By writing this article, the writer mainly wants to ______. A. help readers improve their language skills B. teach readers to understand body language C. show readers how to find out if someone is lying D. tell readers it is important to learn body language D On the days when the weather is fine, Legerena Wagner drives 45 minutes to a water station in Sweetwater, the Navajo Nation. She goes there to fill her water containers. Back home, Wagner and her family use the water carefully. Wagner is one of more than two million Americans who do not have running water at home. Most of these people are local Americans. They don’t have the money to buy new water systems. The Navajo Nation is the largest Local American community in the United States. Water has long been thought of as a luxury (奢侈品) there. About 300,000 people live in the Navajo Nation. One-third of them do not have running water. They cannot use water at a sink (水槽) or flush toilets (抽水马桶) at home. In Sweetwater, the spring water was famous for its natural taste. Now, many of the springs have dried up. The local people say this is a result of climate change. Using oil and natural gas has caused the Earth to become warmer. Rising temperatures could result in more dry weather in some areas, such as the Navajo Nation. Those without running water in the Navajo Nation have to drive long distances to a well or a water station to get water. That water, however, might be unsafe. Some water sources have been polluted. Sometimes, people buy bottled water from a store that is an hour’s drive away. Wagner is worried that many people in other places are still wasting lots of water every day. “Water is life,” she said. “We must not waste water, or water shortages will become more and more serious.” 12. Many local Americans don’t have running water at home because ______. A. they can’t afford new water systems B. they live in small communities C. they don’t know how to use water systems D. they prefer to get water from wells. 13. Local people in the Navajo Nation are facing all the following problems except that _______. A. the water station is quite far away from their homes B. there is not enough water in the wells or the water stations C. many of the springs have dried up because of climate change D. the water they get from the water station might have been polluted 15. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Wagner is hopeful about water shortages. B. People in other places should learn to save water. C. Water shortages will become less serious soon. D. Bottled water is the best choice for Navajo people. 第二节(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) E First-grade students at a primary school in Houston got a look at their future through AI. The next day, The New York Times headline read: “Great Novelist Dies… Mourned (哀悼) by the People of Two Continents (大洲).” The headline did not overstate his fame. Even today, the British novelist is loved by readers all over the world. Dickens created some of the most unforgettable characters in English literature. You must have heard of or even read some of his novels: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897, there have been over 300 film and TV adaptations (改编作品) of Dickens’s works. And A Christmas Carol alone has nearly 50 adaptations. Natalie McKnight is a literature professor who studies Dickens and his works. She explains why the novelist has remained so popular today. One important reason is that Dickens wrote from his heart and tried hard to draw readers’ minds. For example, A Christmas Carol was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society. People always enjoy works that make them laugh, cry and think. Many other 19th-century writers wrote entertaining works, but few of them worked as hard as Dickens to draw readers’ minds. Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. He used his pen to fight social unfairness and gave voice to the poor. His works led to many important social changes. Readers always enjoy seeing poor people rise and succeed. This June marks the 156th anniversary of Dickens’s death. It is a chance for us to remember this great writer again. Will you read or reread some of his famous works? 41. When was Charles Dickens born? 42. Why is Dickens still popular with readers all over the world today? (List one reason) 43. What was Dickens’ purpose in writing A Christmas Carol? 44. What is the main idea of this passage? 45. Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese. 第二节 写作(满分20分) 为响应“走进大自然”的校园倡议,你校英语报以Let’s Get Close to Nature为题征稿。 Let’s Get Close to Nature To take part in the school activity “Get Close to Nature”, I’d like to share my ideas with you. ______________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
