Several years ago I was driving to my daughter’s college to bring her home for the summer break. It was a long trip so I stopped at a little gas station halfway to refuel. I pulled up behind an old car. It was at least 20 years old. The metal was rusting (生锈), and the tires were balding (变秃). A young teenage girl sat in the front passenger seat and two much younger girls were in the back.
After filling my gas tank I walked in to pay. The mother of the girls was at the counter desperately digging through her purse. She had bought some small snacks for her children but still needed five more dollars to pay for them. She sighed and started to pick up the snacks to put them back. “I got them,” I said and put the money on the counter.
The mum turned and looked at me with wet eyes. Then suddenly she stepped forward and hugged me. I felt a burst of warmth in my heart that surely traveled to my cheeks as well. The mum let me go and said, “Thank you.” She smiled, grabbed the snacks and hurried out to her children. I stood there watching them leave and said a prayer for them. Then I walked out into the sunshine feeling lighter than the air around me.

Have you ever thought about why malls, restaurants, and even theaters have music? Well, to understand this, you simply just look back at how you felt when you heard music in these places. Music is known to improve the mood of people. Often music helps us pay attention to what we are doing. Music helps patients feel good and better.
Depression is a state of mind that most of us experience at some point of time. There are some periods in our life when everything seems difficult. It seems that everything is getting worse and we have no control over our life. Studies have shown that music can be an important mood lifter in such situations. Music also plays a great role in making us feel less nervous or worried. Anxiety can often cause loss of sleep and other illnesses.
Music is often known as an international language. We may not know the language another person is speaking, but most of us respond to music in the same way. Music can often be the best way to connect with someone.
Music is one of the best ways to improve your moods, but this can depend largely on the kind of music you listen to. While happy music can certainly make you feel better, sad music can further lower your spirits. Listening to classical music can often make you feel a lot more powerful, while soft music can be the perfect way to relax at the end of a long day. If you want to use music to change the way how you are feeling, you need to understand the role of it, learn to recognize the kind of music that lifts your mood and helps you feel better. Once you realize the kind of music you can use, you can use it to change the way you feel. The right kind of music can be the perfect way to help us feel happier.
28. According to the text, what’s the purpose of playing music in restaurants?
A. To welcome the customers. B. To make customers feel good.
C. To make customers dance. D. To make customers feel depressed.
29. What can we know from the text?
A. Most of us suffer depression all the time.
B. Most of us respond to music in different ways.
C. Music can be a good way to connect with others.
D. Any kind of music will help us improve our moods.
30. According to the last paragraph, what kind of music can relax ourselves from a long day’s work?
A. Rock music. B. Classical music.
C. Sad music. D. Soft music.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Music Affects Our Moods B. How We Control Our Moods
C. What Meanings Music Has D. What Kind of Music We Listen to
D
Trust is the basis of sincere human friendship. A recent report suggests that the same holds true among chimpanzee (黑猩猩) cronies.
Earlier studies had shown that chimpanzees have relationships that look quite like friendships. For example, they’ll show preferences to selected individuals. The question was, are those interactions (互动) based on trust?
To find out, Engelmann observed the interactions of 15 chimpanzees over a 5-month period. Based on friendly interactions among chimp pairs, including eating together, the researchers found out each chimpanzee’s closest “friend” and a “non-friend”. The researchers then asked the chimps to play a game, both with their friend and with their non-friend. In the game, chimps had a choice between pulling a “no-trust rope”. and a “trust rope”. When the no-trust rope was pulled, the first chimp immediately got a food he or she didn’t like especially well. When the trust rope was pulled instead, the other chimp immediately got a much more attractive food and could choose to send a treat back to the first chimp (or not). In other words, the trust rope offered a win-win, but only if chimp one trusted chimp two enough to send something back. Each chimp played the game 12 times with his or her friend and another 12 times with his or her non-friend.
The findings suggest that human friendship isn’t unique. “Human friendships don’t represent an unusual thing in the animal world.” Engelmann says, “Other animals, such as chimpanzees, form close and long-term bonds with selected individuals and trust friends in costly situations.”
32. What does the underlined word “cronies” in the first paragraph most probably mean?
A. Families. B. Friends. C. Species. D. Babies.
33. What discovery have earlier studies made about chimpanzees?
A. There exist friendships among them.
B. Their friendships are based on trust.
C. They don’t prefer one fellow to another.
D. They hold the same relationships with each other.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How chimps built trust with friends.
B. How chimps told friends from non-friends.
C. How Engelmann carried out his study on chimps.
D. How the researchers helped chimps form relationships.
35. What can we learn from Engelmann’s opinion?
A. Relationships among chimps don’t last long.
B. Chimps are unlikely to form close relationships.
C. Animals refuse to trust friends in costly situations.
D. Friendships are quite common in the animal world.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lily was a high school student who loved comparing herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she would feel jealous (嫉妒的) and want to buy something better. Her parents often told her, “True value isn’t in what you own,” but she never listened.
One day, Lily noticed a girl from another class whose name was Coco. Coco’s family was wealthy, but she always wore simple clothes and carried an old schoolbag. Unlike Lily, Coco never joined the students’ discussions about brands or prices. Instead, she spent her time helping classmates with math problems or volunteering in the school library. Her grades were always at the top of the class, and everyone respected her.
Lily couldn’t understand why Coco didn’t care about material things. One afternoon, Lily saw Coco sitting alone under a tree, reading a book. She decided to talk to her. “Why don’t you buy nicer things?” Lily asked. “Your family has enough money.” Coco looked up with a smile. “I’d rather spend money on things that matter,” she said. “Like helping others or buying books.”
That night, Lily thought about Coco’s words. She realized that she had been looking for things that didn’t bring real happiness. The next day, she made a decision: she would stop comparing herself with others and start focusing on what was truly meaningful.

Dear Tom,
I am writing to invite you to come and spend the Mid-Autumn Festival with me this year.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is an important traditional Chinese festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. During the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy mooncakes. If people can’t turn up at the important festival, they often ring up to send greetings to their family. All in all, this festival is worth experiencing. If you come, we will have fun with each other.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文
The following week, Lily began to learn from Coco. She stopped asking her parents for expensive items and instead used her pocket money to buy a few second-hand books, which she shared with classmates who couldn’t pay for new ones. During lunch breaks, instead of talking about brand shoes or phones, she joined Coco in the library, organizing books and helping younger students find what they needed. At first, she felt a little shy, but seeing the smiles on others’ faces warmed her heart.
Months later, teachers and classmates all praised Lily. Her grades had jumped from average to the top 10 in her class, and she organized a weekly study group that helped half of her classmates improve. "Lily’s heart is as bright as her smile now," her math teacher said in class. Her parents, seeing her donate old clothes to charity, hugged her tightly. Lily finally understood that true value lies not in what you have, but in what you give.
附听力材料
(Text 1)
M: Mom, where is my blue tie? It goes well with my shirt.
W: It should be in the cupboard, next to the sweater.
M: All right. I found it.
(Text 2)
M: The tea tastes good. I’ll buy one kilo.
W: OK, sir. Can I pack it for you now, or deliver it to you by mail later?
M: I can take it with me now.
W: All right.
(Text 3)
W: We can’t be late for the family dinner today.
M: Don’t worry. We still have two hours left. My phone fell to the ground, and the camera was broken. How about fixing that first?
W: OK. Let’s go!
(Text 4)
W: Jack, you look a little sad today. Did you fail your test?
M: No. You know the bike my mom bought me last month, right? It was stolen.
W: Oh, I am sorry for that.
(Text 5)
W: Can I borrow this book, sir?
M: I’m sorry. You can only read it within the library.
W: OK. In this case, I have to buy it from the bookstore.
(Text 6)
W: Bob, how about this new dress?
M: It looks a little old-fashioned on you.
W: It’s not for me. It’s a present for my mom. You know Mother’s Day is next week. I remember you bought a bag for your mom last year. What about this year?
M: Um, I have no idea. How about some flowers?
W: Not bad. We could have a look at the underground shopping center together when we get off work.
M: Good idea!
W: Let’s prepare for the meeting now.
M: OK.
(Text 7)
W: I did the word puzzle for 3 hours last night! I’ve got a super love for it.
M: I never tried that.
W: So, what did you do last night? Don’t tell me you watched the short videos on the phone!
M: Well, I just played football games on the computer. But I like spending time on short videos about funny animals as well.
W: I watched those too, but I enjoy watching short videos about movie stars.
M: You share the same taste as my sister, but we should watch more news to keep us informed.
W: You’re right.
(Text 8)
W: John, you are late. Accident again? You should have arrived at 9:00.
M: I am so sorry I’m 30 minutes late. I forgot to charge my car last night, and I had to take the subway this morning.
W: Why didn’t you call a taxi?
M: You know, it’s expensive to call a taxi in rush hour.
W: I hope it will not happen again. You know the time for our project is very limited. You can’t let everyone just wait for you.
M: Sorry, madam. I’ll keep that in mind.
(Text 9)
W: Hi, George. Any plans for this summer vacation?
M: Hi, Linda. We are planning to have fun at Dollywood’s Splash Country.
W: Sounds interesting. Tell me more about it, please.
M: OK. It will begin daily operation on May 20th and go through August 6th. The park will change to a weekend-only schedule until closing on September 10th.
W: It will run the operation for the whole summer, then.
M: Right! The park provides food trucks and some shade structures for people to avoid the sunshine. But this year, it will add a new service-new fresh mini donuts!
W: I love that! What programs are there?
M: Well, there are programs like water slides race, lazy river, and waves riding in the pool.
W: I like riding the waves. It’s my favorite water sport. What is the price to visit this park then?
M: For one-day tickets, $ 54.95 for adults, $ 44.95 for children ages 4-9, and $ 44.95 for seniors ages 62 and older.
W: The prices are reasonable.
M: Yeah, maybe you can try that, too.
W: Good idea.
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. I’d like to talk about Chinese cartoons today. Chinese cartoons started from the period of 1922 to 1949. The Wan brothers produced China’s first animated short in 1926. Titled Studio Scene, it was a 10-minute black and white short with a very simple style. In 1941, China’s first full-length feature animated film Princess Iron Fan was born. The period from 1950 to 1964 was regarded as the Golden Age of Chinese cartoons. Many excellent animated works came up and many new styles were created. The well-known action cartoon Magic Brush won China’s first international award. Another example, Havoc in Heaven tells the heroic story of the Monkey King, combining classic Chinese culture and cartoon, creating a good memory for many people that lasts until today. Chinese cartoons began their second development stage after 1978. Classic animated films such as Ne Zha and The Three Monks were shown on screen. Their stories were mostly based on traditional Chinese literature and featured a typical Asian style. However, from 1996 to 2014, Chinese cartoons saw a decline compared with the introduction of cartoons from other countries.
