Lightning usually destroys trees it hits. But scientists have found an amazing tree. It not only lives through lightning strikes (击中) but actually grows better because of them!
For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning. It wasn’t until about 100 years ago that such “super trees” were discovered.
Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning’s power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself.
In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree (香豆树) , which had been struck by strong lightning. It wasn’t badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed. Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure.
Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So, they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2-6 years. They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm. But 84 other trees were badly hurt, and 64% of them died within two years.
These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. During the study, one of the Dipteryx oleifera trees was struck twice in5 years but continued to grow well.
At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and get more nutrients. Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess it may involve the trees’ ability to carry electricity. They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics.
19. What is special about the Dipteryx oleifera tree?
A. It grows better after being hit by lightning. B. It dies quickly after lightning hits.
C. It avoids lightning by hiding under other trees. D. It takes in nutrients directly from lightning.
20. The underlined word “handle” means “_________” in the passage.
A. give away B. give out C. deal with D. suffer from
21. Why do some trees attract lightning on purpose?
A. To get more space. B. To grow stronger and taller.
C. To kill nearby trees for growth. D. To protect other trees around them.
22. What might scientists do next according to the passage?
A. Do more studies about Dipteryx oleifera trees. B. Look for more trees that can survive lightning.
C. Study how trees attract lightning better. D. Plant more Dipteryx oleifera trees.
A 20. C 21. C 22. B

Weiqi, commonly known as Go in English, is a board game that originated in ancient China. The game is considered one of the Four Arts that Chinese literators’ were required to master. Besides weiqi, they had to learn Chinese calligraphy (shu), painting (hua) and the guqin playing (qin).
Weiqi has a history of over 4,000 years, even older than Chinese chess. According to some historical records, the game, known as yi in its early years, is said to have been invented by Yao. Seeing that his son had a bad temper (脾气), Yao was rather worried. So he decided to find something that could help educate his son, and a simple board game came to him.
The rules of weiqi are simple: using black and white stones (棋子), two players take turns placing their stones on empty cross points of the board. The goal is to surround (包围) a larger total area on the board while preventing one’s own stones from being taken by the opponent (对手). Stones do not move and are only taken off the board if they are completely surrounded.
The scene of two people playing weiqi appears in many traditional Chinese paintings. The image of a player holding a stone over the board, looking for a place to put it, was later turned into a popular Chinese idiom (成语), which means “unsure about making a move”. The expression is still widely used today.
With its development, weiqi grew in popularity. Later, it spread to the Korean Peninsula, Japan and Western countries. Today, it has become an international board game.

23. The underlined expression “unsure about making a move” means “_________” in the passage.

D. Weiqi has become more and more popular around the world.

VII.
Editor’s note: China Daily is publishing news about China’s work to reach its carbon peak (碳达峰) and carbon neutrality (碳中和) goals.
① In 2024, China made big progress on its long-term climate goals. It led the world’s energy change at a speed never seen before. Though it’s challenging, Chinese experts are still working on achieving carbon peak before 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by 2060.
②More renewable energy ( like water power and wind power) starts working. In the first 9 months of 2024, China added 210 million kilowatts (千瓦) of new renewable energy. That is 21% more than the same time last year, and 86% of all new power capacity (产量). That’s a lot!
③A leader from Wood Mackenzie, a UK energy company, says China continues to lead the world energy changing. Never has the world seen the speed of growth of an energy system that China is achieving. And in 2025, China’s solar and wind power was more than Europe and North America together.
④The leader also says China’s transport is changing. By 2034, electric cars will make up 66% car sales.
Key words to know:
●carbon peak: carbon emissions (碳排放量) will first reach the highest point, and then start to go down.
●carbon neutrality: the balance of the amount of CO₂ we put into the air with the amount we take out
51. What can we put into “ ▲ ”?
We can put _______________________ there.
52. What’s the meaning of “carbon neutrality”?
It means the balance of _______________________ with the amount people take out.
53. What does the underlined word “That” refer to in the passage?
It refers to _______________________ in the passage.
54. What is the leader’s attitude (态度) towards China’s achievements in Paragraph ③?
He feels _______________________.
55. What’s the passage mainly about?
It’s mainly about _______________________.
51. Carbon peak
52. the amount of CO₂ people put into the air
53. 210 million kilowatts of new renewable energy
54. amazed/surprised
55. China’s big steps on green changing in 2024
根据“Chinese experts are still working on achieving carbon peak before 2030”可知,中国专家正致力于在2030年前实现碳达峰。
根据文中“carbon neutrality: the balance of the amount of CO₂ we put into the air with the amount we take out”可知,“carbon neutrality”的意思是人们排放到空气中的二氧化碳量与人们吸收的二氧化碳量之间的平衡,所以答案是“the amount of CO₂ people put into the air”,这是直接从文中对“carbon neutrality”的解释中提取信息。
根据前文“In the first 9 months of 2024, China added 210 million kilowatts (千瓦) of new renewable energy.”
根据第三段“A leader from Wood Mackenzie, a UK energy company, says China continues to lead the world energy changing. Never has the world seen the speed of growth of an energy system that China is achieving.”
根据第一段“In 2024, China made big progress on its long-term climate goals.”

* The word “literator” means a person who is learned or read well, especially in classical literature.
23. The underlined expression “unsure about making a move” means “_________” in the passage.

B. Weiqi has a history of more than five thousand years.
C. The player who surrounds a smaller total area of the board wins the game.
D. Weiqi has become more and more popular around the world.
