Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Leading in and introduction (Opening Page) Activity 1 Leading-in and introduction 1. Lead in the topic of this unit and talk about the importance of sea exploration. Why do human beings explore seas and oceans? Is it important for China to explore seas? Why? 2. Talk about the picture and the saying on the opening page by answering the following questions. 1) What do you think of when you see the photo? The photo is of lemon butterfly fish and orange-band surgeon fish surrounding a diver. It shows a scene of harmony, calm, beautiful dreams,… 2) What sea animals and plants do you know/ can you see in the picture? There are many sea animals, such as dolphins, sharks, manatees, whales, shellfish, crabs, seahorses, and seaweed. 3) What words would you use to describe the sea? To me, the sea is full of life. Even when you cannot see ocean animals, the sea itself is constantly in motion and never standing still. As something full of life, the sea also has moods. Sometimes it is bright and cheerful, while at other times it is stormy and angry. 4) How do you understand the quote “They (oceans) provide a breeding ground for life, connect the world and promote development”? Chinese meaning: 海洋孕育了生命、联通了世界、促进了发展。 This saying tells us the importance of oceans in the process of human development. 3. Introduce the learning objectives of this unit and this period. Step 2 Pre-reading Activity 2 Pre-reading 1. Warm up. What do you know about sea exploration and some famous navigators? Navigator Nationality Achievement Time Zheng He Chinese made seven voyages to the Western Seas; his voyages are one of the world navigation feats in history 1405 -1433 Christopher Columbus Italian discovered a new world (America) 1492 Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese made the first voyage around the world 1519 2. Introduce other background information. 1) Zheng He was a Chinese admiral and explorer who led several voyages around the Indian Ocean. The first voyage started in Yongle three years (1405), and the last voyage ended in Xuande eight years (1433), totally seven times. Zheng He’s voyages are one of the world navigation feats in history. 2) Watch a video to learn about compass and Zheng He. Step 3 While-reading Activity 3 Reading comprehension of the text 1. Look at the title and skim the text. Decide what type of essay it is. Strategy of identifying text type: A title usually covers the main point of the subject or keywords of the essay. It shares the theme of the essay and tells the reader what to expect. There are the four major types of essay: narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative. A narrative essay is a story with a beginning, middle, and end. A descriptive essay describes a subject and lists interesting details. An expository essay is factual, giving information on a subject. An argumentative essay aims to convince the reader. This essay is an expository essay. 2. Read the text again. Summarize the main idea of each paragraph. Para.1 Travel from east to west began long before Columbus. Para.2 In ancient times, travel east to west was on the Silk Road. Para.3 Zheng He’s sea voyages built relations with other countries. Para.4 The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road has encouraged cooperation and strengthened the bonds between China and the rest of the world (Today, the Belt and Road Initiative is picking up where Zheng He left off.) Para.5 China is also joining with other countries on other important projects. Para.6 China will continue to explore the sea and enhance relationships with other countries. 3. Scan the text for detailed information and fill in the table with the correct names. Talk about how the passage is developed/organized. By following the time order. Paras. 1-3 In ancient times (in the 8th century, in Ming Dynasty) Paras. 4-5 Today (the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road) Para. 6 In the future (China will reach out across the sea far into the future) 5. Complete the reading comprehension exercises in the reference book to understand the text better. Step 4 Post-reading Activity 4 Thinking and discussion Discuss the significance of sea exploration and identify facts and opinions. Make notes under two columns: Explain facts and opinions: Facts are statements that can be proven. Facts may be true or false. Opinions are statements that cannot be proven. Opinions can be argued. Opinions may be supported with facts. Discuss the questions and make notes under facts and opinions and then share the answers. Suggested answers: Question Facts Opinions 1. Which countries reached out across the sea in the past and why? European explorers, China, India, Ceylon, African royal families; for trade 2. What benefits and problems did those countries get from doing this? They got new products from many different countries and became more aware of other cultures; In some cases, this led to invasion and conquest. 3. What effects did reaching out across the sea in the past have on the world? The land and sea routes remained active channels between different cultures for centuries; Generally speaking, the result was positive, as it advanced the spread of knowledge, technology, and goods, and made the world a smaller place. 4. What do you think is the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative? The aim of this initiative is to encourage cooperation and trade across the historical Silk Road areas, and strengthen the bonds between China and the rest of the world; It will lead to greater integration with China and other countries. Activity 5 Talking and text reconstruction 1. Talk about China’s sea exploration. 1) What achievements has China made in reaching out across the sea? More exploration of the regions to the west of China in the eighth century. Further developed relations with the regions to the west of China in the Ming Dynasty. The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road— part of the Belt and Road initiative. Joining other nations to explore the Arctic. 2) What effects did China’s reaching out across the sea in the past have on the world? Although China withdrew from further expeditions after 1433, these land and sea routes remained active channels between other cultures for centuries. 3) What about other countries? Some western European countries (such as Britain, Norway, and Netherlands), America and Japan have a long history of sea exploration and advanced marine industry and navigation technology as well. 2. Reconstruct the text by retelling the main content of the text. Step 5 Evaluation and summary Activity 6 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1.
