Every time the boy saw the house miles away with its golden-diamond windows shining brightly, his heart beat with excitement. One day, he went alone on a journey to find this beautiful house. His bare feet (赤脚) left prints in the white dust, and when he looked back, the footprints seemed to follow and stay with him. His shadow stayed beside him too, dancing or running at his will.
After a long time he came to a high green hill, where there was the house on the top, but it seemed that the shutters (百叶窗) were up, for he could not see the golden windows. He walked closer to the house and almost cried, because the windows were of clear glass, ▲ .
A woman came to the door and greeted him.
“I saw the golden windows from our hilltop,” he said, “and I came to see them, but…”
The woman smiled softly, “We’re just farmers and we could never afford golden windows.” She invited him in, where he met her daughter, a barefoot girl of his age with hair as golden as the windows he’d admired.
When the boy asked about the golden windows, the girl nodded. “But you’re looking in the wrong place!” she shouted. “Come on. I’ll show you the real ones.”
Hand in hand they went to the top of the hill behind the house, and as they waited, the sun sank (下沉) low and sent long rays (光线) across the valley (山谷). Then the little girl pointed, and the boy looked. There, on a distant hill, stood a house with windows shining like gold and diamonds.
“Look!” cried the little girl, “There are your golden windows!”
The boy looked with his eyes wide open. The setting sun had turned the clear glass of his own windows to gold, shining brightly.

①Is the sky bluer in fall than in summer? The answer is yes! There are some reasons for this.
②The sun is lower in the sky in fall. As the days get shorter, the sun is closer to the Earth. It doesn’t shine directly on us anymore. Instead, it is closer to the earth and more blue light is scattered (散射). This lets the sky seem bluer.
③In fall, there is less water in the air, so there are fewer clouds. Fall is known for good weather — cooler temperatures and less wet air. The air does not hold much water; so clouds do not form easily. When there are few or no clouds covering the sky, the blue color of the sky shows more clearly, and the sky looks more open and brighter.
④You might be surprised, but the colorful leaves of fall actually help give the sky’s blueness a color boost (增强), which can make the sky seem even bluer. If you’ve made a color wheel for an art class, you know that blue and orange are opposite colors that look good together. The red, orange, and gold leaves of fall make the blue sky stand out beautifully against them. This contrast looks nice and creates a special autumn view.
⑤So, the next time you’re out enjoying the beautiful weather in autumn, take a moment to look up at the sky, remember these reasons why it looks so blue and enjoy the view!
43. How does the writer lead into the topic in Paragraph ①?
A. By making a survey. B. By telling a joke.
C. By using an old saying. D. By asking a question.
44. Why does the sky look bluer in fall according to Paragraph ②?
A. Because the sun is shining directly on us. B. Because the sun is closer to the Earth.
C. Because the sun is smaller in the sky. D. Because the sun is covered by the clouds.
45. What is the structure of the text?
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①/②③/④⑤ C. ①②/③/④⑤ D. ①②③/④/⑤

In China, children like to make promises by hooking pinkies (拉小手指) with each other and saying, “A pinky promise must be kept for 100 years.” There is one more step. 46 It’s a fun way for children to show they’ll keep their word.
How did this pinky promise come about? No one knows the exact answer. 47 . These guesses have been passed down for years. Some say it came from a song for kids. 48 It was born out of a western love story where a man and a woman hooked pinkies.
49 The Chinese character for “finger” is also pronounced as “zhǐ (旨)”, which means people’s inner thoughts and aims. So hooking pinkies can be seen as the exchanging of these inner ideas. 50

A. Others say it was introduced from the West.
B. Here are many guesses on how the pinky promises came about.
C. It’s not just about talking, but also about learning from each other.

Have you heard of the idiom “Jing Wei Fen Ming”? It is from a natural wonder in Shaanxi Province — the meeting of the Jing River and the Wei River.
The Wei River is an important * tributary of the Yellow River. It runs through the Guanzhong Plain (平原) in Shaanxi. The Jing River is a tributary of the Wei River. It starts from Ningxia and flows through the Loess Plateau (黄土高原). Long ago, the Jing River had clearer water because there were more plants in its upper areas.
When the Jing River and the Wei River meet in Gaoling, Xi’ an, a special sight appears. Due to different sediment content (沉积物含量) and flow speeds, one river is clear and the other is turbid. They don’t mix easily, forming a special line between them. At first, people saw “clear Jing and turbid Wei”. But as trees were cut down, the Jing River became turbid. Later, it even became “clear Wei and turbid Jing”.
This wonder was recorded in the ancient book The Book of Songs (《诗经》). The Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu also wrote about it in his poem Autumn Rain Lament (《秋雨叹》):“How long will the turbid Jing and clear Wei remain separate?”
Today, the idiom “Jing Wei Fen Ming” keeps the idea of “clear and turbid”. It is not only used to describe natural wonders but also widely used to describe a clear difference between right and wrong, or two very different views or styles. “Jing Wei Fen Ming” shows the wisdom of ancient Chinese people — they learned from nature and turned it into a cultural idea.
