Class Experience
As a professional author, I love talking about books with students, and I especially love urging them to dig deep and think about books beyond a simple “I liked it” or “I didn’t like it”. This class seeks to engage students in meaningful discussions about books while also touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone and voice. The books selected for this course are modern reads that are less likely to strike students as “required reading”. There is so much to be learned from reading outside our “comfort zone”.
Students need to independently purchase or borrow the selected book, and should have read approximately 1/4 before our first meeting.

(原创) In my eleventh-grade creative writing class last semester, I came across a fearless superhero who fought against evil, a wise old man who shared profound life lessons, and a young adventurer who set out to find the lost treasure. Time and again, I wondered how my students, who had crafted these personas, knew them so intimately.
But their initial essay, which was centered around the query: “Why is creative writing essential?” was a far cry from what I expected. Most of the essays were scanty, filling less than a page, and scarcely any had a well-formed thesis statement. I was taken aback. It then dawned on me that the problem lay in the question itself. They could have expounded at length on the indispensability of smartphones, but creative writing, in its own right, simply didn’t register as crucial to them. This had to be rectified.
As a new unit got underway, I tasked everyone with writing a persuasive essay on an environmental-related topic of their choosing. This time, they found the exercise significantly more appealing. For the subsequent two assignments, a descriptive-writing unit followed by a script-writing workshop, I only stipulated that the piece adhere to the genre’s specifications and incorporate a thesis. The results were astounding. The students delved into diverse topics and submitted works, ranging from 12 to 22 pages, with characters and plots that expanded my vision and tugged at my heartstrings.
I entered the classroom convinced that creative writing is important as a means of self-discovery. However, my students demonstrated something of even greater import to me. When the final bell chimed in May, I departed with a collection of student works brimming with messages about creative writing’s most potent significance — the power to forge connections, to allow us to step into others’ shoes, and to impart the essence of being human.
24. Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 1?
A. Eleventh-grade students. B. Fictional characters created by students.
C. Students’ favorite movie characters. D. Real-life heroes in modern society.
25. Why did the students perform poorly in their first essay?
A. They lacked basic writing skills. B. They were unfamiliar with the topic.
C. They didn’t see the importance of the topic. D. They were pressed for time.
26. What does the underlined word “astounding” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Impressive. B. Average. C. Unimpressive. D. Expected.
27. What does the author’s experience mainly convey?
A. Teaching methods should be adjusted to students’ needs.
B. Creative writing can change people’s views and connect hearts.
C. Knowledge is best imparted through continuous practice.
D. Students can teach teachers more than expected.

(新情景) AI image generators have made a giant leap forward in a remarkably short period. These sophisticated systems are now capable of creating human faces that are not only convincing but often perceived as more realistic than actual human ones. This phenomenon, termed “hyper-realism”, poses a significant challenge to digital trust. However, a recent collaborative study by researchers from the UK points to a promising path: improving our collective AI-face detection capabilities through specialized, targeted training.
The research team tested the face-assessing skills of 664 volunteers, categorized into two distinct groups: “super-recognizers” — individuals who possess a rare, naturally superior ability for facial recognition — and those with typical recognition skills. The experiment involved two core tasks designed to test intuition and logic. In the initial task, volunteers evaluated a single image to determine its origin; in the subsequent task, they were presented with a pair of faces — one real and one synthetic — and asked to identify the fake.
In the control group that received no prior instruction, the data revealed a worrying trend. Super-recognizers correctly identified AI faces only 41 percent of the time, while typical recognizers dropped to a mere 31 percent. Given that half the images were AI-generated, both groups performed significantly worse than random chance (50 percent). This statistical gap confirms that AI portraits can effectively deceive the human brain’s natural processing systems.
To counter this, the study introduced a brief five-minute intervention. Participants were trained to look for “tell-tale” signs — subtle biological flaws such as unnatural teeth alignment or strange blurring where the hair meets the skin.
Following this session, the accuracy of super-recognizers boosted to 64 percent. In contrast, while typical recognizers improved to 51 percent, they remained at the level of a coin flip.
“As AI images are increasingly exploited for illegal purposes like identity theft scams, testing detection methods is crucial from a security standpoint,” explains researcher Eilidh Noyes. The findings highlight that while technology evolves, human expertise remains indispensable. Combining innate talent with professional training may be our best defense in verifying digital identities and securing the future of online interaction.
28. The study mainly examines participants’ ________.
A. logical reasoning B. reaction speed
C. technical knowledge D. observational skills
29. What does the training session primarily focus on?
A. Improving the general speed of visual assessment.
B. Analyzing the psychological impact of digital fakes.
C. Recognizing artificial traces in biological features.
D. Understanding the technical principles of AI systems.
30. What is the significance of the 64 percent accuracy rate mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. It confirms the potential of combining gift with practice.
B. It represents the maximum limit of human recognition,
C. It shows the similarity between human and AI.
D. It indicates that most people can be trained to spot false images.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Technical evolution will eventually eliminate identity theft
B. Professional training is more essential than natural talent.
C. Human factors remain a critical layer in digital defense.
D. The security risks of AI are currently overestimated.
D
The placebo effect, where a patient’s belief influences treatment effectiveness, was once dismissed as unscientific but is now recognized as a genuine therapeutic tool. In a new study published in Nature Medicine, researchers have begun to uncover its inner workings by revealing that positive expectations can boost the immune (免疫的) system’s response to vaccination (疫苗接种).
To explore the brain’s role in immunity, researchers from Tel Aviv University focused on the mesolimbic network, a brain region associated with reward-related behavior and also known as an area linked to immune function in mice. They gathered 85 volunteers for brain training that allowed them to influence nervous processes normally outside conscious control.
The volunteers were divided into three groups; one trained to activate the brain’s reward system, another trained to activate an unrelated network, and a third that received no training. Each group completed four sessions, in which those in training groups developed and improved their individual strategies to shift activity to the assigned region. Immediately after the final session, everyone received a hepatitis B vaccination.
Blood tests showed a strong connection between brain activity and the immune system. Higher activity in a brain region linked to pleasure and reward was associated with higher antibody levels. The researchers suggest this is the first direct evidence of a brain-immune regulatory (调节) system in humans.
The researchers found that sustained activity in the ventral tegmental area of the brain was specifically linked to positive expectations — hopeful thoughts about the future — and that this connection strengthened with training. In contrast, general positive emotions, such as pleasure or love, did not display such a relationship. The team’s research provides convincing evidence for the brain’s influence on physiology (生理学), and also helps to understand the biological mechanism of the placebo effect itself. Positive expectations have long been linked to placebo responses, but researchers have now observed their specific role. While more trials are needed, this brain-body link gives a potentially underused clinical tool a firmer scientific basis.
32. What does the study published in Nature Medicine mainly find?
A. The placebo effect is unscientific to some extent.
B. Positive thinking can improve the body’s defense.
C. The mesolimbic network is directly linked to immune function.
D. Brain training is an effective way to influence nervous processes.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The process of the experiment. B. The standard for participant selection.
C. The wide variety of volunteers’ strategies. D. The difficulty in controlling brain activity.
34. What is the significance of the research?
A. It supports the clinical use of the placebo effect.
B. It shows training strengthens general positive emotions.
C. It explains how pleasure directly influences physiology.
D. It identifies the brain activity linked to positive expectations.
35. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Hepatitis B: Vaccination Saves Lives
B. Brain Training: Thoughts Affect Health
C. The Placebo Effect: Mind Influences Body
D. The Placebo Effect: Immunity Promotes Happiness

The Power of Thinking Differently
Just in the past few weeks, my wife has become the supporter of the concept of zero-waste living. Zero-waste is obviously about changing behaviors to produce less waste. But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue (积累) things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else. ___36___ And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.
This came to mind as I read a cover story in education. Ostensibly (表面上), it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude (天赋). ___37___
That is always going to be hard. But in recent decades, colleges have realized that the old ways of judging individual value, while not necessarily wrong, were narrow. While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success. ___38___ The tests weren’t good enough. Schools could do better.
So what has happened? Schools are increasingly consenting to think differently about admissions. They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual. ___39___ Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake. However, once the first step is taken, the onward pull of reason and morality speed progress.
At a time when there appears to be so much confusion in the world, it is possible to look out and instead see something else: the world struggling with the perpetual (长久的) task of consenting to new ideas. Politics today show how easily we can become stuck in the mentally familiar.
___40___ That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.
The only constant is the universal need for progress, and that will never leave us where it found us.
A.It starts with consenting (同意) to change thought.
B.Undoubtedly there have been missteps along the way.
C.In short, they left a lot of amazing people out and didn’t even know it.
D.But at its heart, it reveals something more fundamental: how we judge individual value.
E.They offer the most challenging academic programs and ensure every student’s physical and mental health.
F.The world, on the other hand, is constantly demanding that we be kinder and more connected and think ever larger.
G.Many universities known to be highly selective in their admissions policies received more applicants than usual.

The airport announcement informed passengers that due to bad weather, the flight would be delayed for two hours before boarding. Mary’s mom commented quietly that the delay seemed to have ruined everyone’s mood. But eleven-year-old Mary stayed calm, softly humming (哼) a new song she had just learned. She was looking forward to the weekend trip to visit her grandparents, excited to share the song with them.
To her, music was like an invisible string that could tie strangers together, creating a warm community. She remembered the first time she had felt this connection: at six years old, waiting for the bus with her mom on a hot, boring day. Then a cheerful tune came from a store loudspeaker—a song about a girl and her dreams:
“Dreams of sunshine and fields of gold,
Where the heart is never old,
Singing songs that never end,
In a world that’s my best friend...”
Without thinking, Mary sang along—her voice soft and gentle at first, like a whisper carried on the gentle wind, which gradually growing stronger and more confident. The melody was simple yet engaging. Time passed without her noticing. When the bus arrived, passengers smiled; an old man beat his walking stick to the beat. As the doors closed, everyone was humming. Mom whispered to her, “You just lifted all our spirits.” Nothing seemed better than music for calming a restless heart, and Mary remembered that.
After boarding the plane, the passengers were told of another weather delay— at least another 45minutes. The cabin (机舱) grew tense with restless movements and complaints.
Then a sudden cry cut through the air. Across the aisle (通道) to Mary’s left, a tiny girl, barely three years old, began to cry. Her mother tried everything—rocking her, offering snacks, water, toys—but nothing worked. The child’s face was wet with tears, her cries loud and broken. Passengers shifted uncomfortably in their seats as the crying filled the cabin.

(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Mary hesitated for a moment, and then turned to her mom.

根据第一段“I wondered how my students, who had crafted these personas, knew them so intimately”可知,文中的超级英雄、智慧老人、年轻探险家,均是学生在创意写作中自主塑造的人物,属于学生创作的虚构角色。A项为学生本人,C项“喜爱的电影角色”、D项“现实英雄”均无原文依据。故选B
25. 细节理解题。根据第二段“creative writing, in its own right, simply didn’t register as crucial to them”可知,学生首篇作文质量不佳的核心原因是,他们并不认可创意写作的重要性。
故选A。

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Dear Jerry,
Aimed at boosting global cultural interactions, our school held an online cross-cultural activity with foreign partner schools last week. I’m writing to share my wonderful experience with you.
In this activity, I showcased Taijiquan, more commonly known as Tai Chi, a national intangible cultural heritage. Different from Western boxing which emphasizes speed and strength, Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial art, with a mix of temperament cultivation, body building, and combat skills. Besides, it stands not only as a treasure of Chinese martial arts but also as an exquisite representation of the philosophical principle in Chinese culture that advocates ‘overcoming hardness with softness and integrating stillness with movement.’ What’s more, it emphasizes the unity of the body and mind, which has deepened my appreciation for Chinese culture.
Culture knows no borders. This event has not only enhanced mutual understanding and friendship but also allowed the world to witness a more open and confident China. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Mary hesitated for a moment, and then turned to her mom. She asked if she could sing for the baby. Mom smiled and nodded in agreement. Encouraged, Mary gently asked the mother if she could sing for the baby. The mother, clearly exhausted after trying everything she could, nodded gratefully. Mary took a deep breath and began to sing. Her voice was soft and gentle at first, like a whisper carried on the gentle wind, which gradually grew stronger and more confident. The song was simple yet engaging. She sang of sunshine and dreams, which was easy to catch.
Slowly, the baby’s cries softened. Her little body relaxed as Mary’s gentle voice filled the air. The song was simple, yet it seemed to weave a calming spell over the cabin. The baby stopping crying and the air filled with comforting song, other passengers, who had been restless, began to quiet down, drawn into the soothing melody. The mother’s tense expression eased, and she gave Mary a grateful smile. As the song reached its end, everyone clapped with cheers, which turned the boring and annoying delay into a musical feast. Mary’s mom leaned over and whispered, “You did it again, lifting all our spirits.”

Arrangement
January: The Stolen Prince of Cloudburst by Jaclyn Moriarty
February: Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart
March: Echo Mountain by Lauren Wolk
April: The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera
May: The Language of Seabirds by Will Taylor
June: The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands
July: A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen
August: The Van Gogh Deception by Deron R. Hicks
September: Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick
October: Ghost by Jason Reynolds
November: Winterhouse by Ben Guterson
December: My Jasper June by Laurel Snyder
