At a party I encountered a museum director, who would soon be leaving on an African safari (观兽旅行). Feeling fascinated, my partner Hugh and I enthusiastically booked one, the sort where you shoot wildlife with a camera rather than a gun.
A month later at Maasai Mara, a 583-square-mile nature reserve, we were in a vehicle surrounded by seven lions, none of which seemed to care about us. On the drive to our camp, we saw every animal that was in The Lion King. But a herd of eight elephants eating grass stole the show. Despite their impressive size, what surprised me, and was so magnificent, was the sound of the tall grass being torn with their trunks. I closed my eyes to listen, imagining creating a best-selling perfume that would smell the way grass being ripped from the ground by elephants.
The world can be a wild place, but that’s not the lesson you want to carry home with you. Yes, we humans are cruel and often dangerous, but there’s still nature, and before it’s too late we need to appreciate it. Admittedly, not everyone can hang out with elephants, but look at that bird landing on your feeder, and at that squirrel chasing the bird away from the feeder. Look at the rats slipping before you on a city street, at the spider that somehow got smashed in your elevator.
We’re all on a safari of one kind or another — it’s just that some of us aren’t returning with two brilliant souvenirs of Maasai and a bacteria infection.
4. What can we learn about the safari the author booked?
A. It involved photographing wild animals. B. It was recommended by the museum director.
C. It required the author to carry a gun for safety. D. It was a last-minute booking due to excitement.
5. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Lions were the most impressive animals they saw.
B. They spotted a great variety of classic wild animals.
C. The author recommended the movie The Lion King.
D. Maasai Mara was the filming location of The Lion King.
6. What does the underlined phrase “stole the show” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Failed to meet expectations. B. Caused a sudden disturbance.
C. Created a dangerous situation. D. Became the most attractive part.
7. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the text?
A. To call for timely appreciation of nature. B. To share an unforgettable safari experience.
C. To remind readers of the cruelty of humans. D. To describe the beauty of wildlife in Africa.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. A

There's more evidence that what's good for your heart is good for your head. A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity (中等强度)exercise have brains that look, on average, 10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better," said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But it's not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga don't count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss, Wright' s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI. Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate intensity activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive people when comparing the results," the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer's disease but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people's memory function.
8. What's true about the study?
A. Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
B. Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
C. High-intensity exercise is better.
D. Ten people scored best on the tests.
9. How did the study team come to the conclusion?
A. By observing people exercise. B. By using examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By doing a brain MRI.
10. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Exercise will definitely strengthen people's memory.
B. Alzheimer's disease may be held back by moderate intensity exercise.
C. Exercise can put off the beginning of memory decline.
D. The findings fit in with the study of healthy food.
11. What's the best title for this passage?
A. How to keep health.
B. Ways to make your brain work better.
C. To exercise or not.
D. Moderate intensity exercises keeps your brain younger.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文。一项研究表明,中等强度的运动可以保持大脑的年轻态。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group.”(这项研究对近900名经常锻炼的人进行了调查,结果显示,90%的人属于低强度锻炼组。)可知,大多数被调查的人都进行低强度运动。故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第一句“We found that those with moderate exercise had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results”(我们发现,在比较结果时,适度运动的患者比不运动的患者得分更高,衰退速度更慢)可知,研究小组通过比较得出结论。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句“Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it.”(许多研究表明,运动可能不能预防阿尔茨海默氏症,但可以延缓它。)可知,锻炼可以推迟记忆力衰退的开始。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度的)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes. (一项新的研究表明,跑步、游泳或做其他中等强度运动的人的大脑看起来平均比电视迷的大脑年轻10岁。)”及全文内容可知,文章介绍了新的研究表明中等强度的运动可以保持大脑的年轻态。“适度的运动可以让你的大脑保持年轻”最适合作文章标题。故选D。

Summer tomatoes are so filled with promise: the red color; the grassy tomato-leaf smell; the expectation of a mouthful of sweet-salty tomato dishes. But supermarket tomato after supermarket tomato does little more than disappointment. How can a fruit with so much potential constantly taste slightly juicy at best and a globe of cardboard at worst?
We know that modern tomatoes sold at the supermarket are picked green and grown for pest resistance, shipping, and shelf life-and that the agriculture industry creates produce designed for profit, not flavor. Are these the factors to blame for the tomato’s poor taste?
But even when allowed to ripen (成熟) before they are harvested and shipped with great care, modern tomatoes are still tasteless. When researchers looked into this tomato matter, they uncovered a fascinating genetic cause for the fruit’s dullness. What to blame is a gene mutation (基因突变) discovered accidentally around 70 years ago, onto which tomato growers quickly relied. In fact, now the mutation has been deliberately grown into nearly all modern tomatoes.
Why? It makes them a uniform and attractively red when ripe. Unfortunately for tomato lovers far and wide, the red-making mutation stops the activeness of an important gene responsible for producing the sugar and smell that are essential for a good smelling and flavorful tomato, as reported in the paper, which was published in the journal Science. When the researchers “turned on” the gene that had stopped working, the fruit had 20% more sugar and 20 — 30% more carotenoids (胡萝卜素) when ripe. Yet the fruit’s non-uniform greenish color suggest that mainstream growers will not be following suit anytime soon.
However, for anyone with a nearby farmer’s market, a supermarket that offers traditional produce, or a garden in the back, there is another choice instead of cardboard-flavored tomatoes. Traditional tomatoes and wild species have not had the essence of tomatoes sucked out of them by selective growing-so shop for those or grow them yourself. They may not look like the Disney version of a perfect fruit, but they actually taste like tomatoes.
12. Why is a question raised at the end of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To draw a conclusion from comparison.
C. To encourage readers to take action.
D. To express disappointment at supermarket tomatoes.
13. Why are modern tomatoes tasteless?
A. They have ripened when picked.
B. They are affected by gene mutation.
C. They are kept on the shelf for too long.
D. They are treated with chemicals for shipping.
14. What’s a disadvantage of the tomatoes the researchers grew according to paragraph 4?
A. Taste. B. Color. C. Size. D. Production.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards traditional tomatoes?
A. Critical. B. Unconcerned. C. Curious. D. Favorable.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. B 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,主要介绍了现代西红柿虽然看起来好看但吃起来却乏味的原因,即:基因突变。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Summer tomatoes are so filled with promise: the red color; the grassy tomato-leaf smell; the expectation of a mouthful of sweet-salty tomato dishes. But supermarket tomato after supermarket tomato does little more than disappointment. How can a fruit with so much potential constantly taste slightly juicy at best and a globe of cardboard at worst?”(夏天的西红柿充满了希望:红色;番茄叶的青草味;期待一口甜咸的番茄菜。 故选A项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“What to blame is a gene mutation (基因突变) discovered accidentally around 70 years ago, onto which tomato growers quickly relied.”(罪魁祸首是大约70年前偶然发现的一种基因突变,番茄种植者很快就依赖于这种突变。)可知,现代番茄无味是因为它们受到基因突变的影响。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Yet the fruit’s non-uniform greenish color suggest that mainstream growers will not be following suit anytime soon.”(然而,这种水果不均匀的绿色表明,主流种植者短期内不会效仿。)可知,根据第4段,研究人员种植的西红柿的缺点是颜色不均匀。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Traditional tomatoes and wild species have not had the essence of tomatoes sucked out of them by selective growing-so shop for those or grow them yourself. They may not look like the Disney version of a perfect fruit, but they actually taste like tomatoes.”(传统的西红柿和野生的西红柿并没有被选择性的种植吸收掉西红柿的精华,所以去商店购买或者自己种植。
Paris is an ideal travel destination with its food, wine, shopping complexes and sightseeing spots. ____16____ Actually it is possible to have a good time without spending a lot.
Forget the large international hotels in the centre. Instead, get off the main streets. There are many hotels just two blocks away from the main tourist attractions, which cost as little as US $35 a night each, including breakfast.
____17____ But who needs more when the point of the trip is to be out in the streets? The real bonus is living among French people and experiencing their life.
Seek out small, local cafes when you want a meal. They are at every street corner in the less fancy parts of town. Choose from the fixed-price dinner menus posted outside these cafes. Many have prices as low as US $9 or US $10. Drinks with meals are more expensive, especially beer and quality wine. But there are some reasonable alternatives. House wine is good: perhaps a couple of dollars per carafe (喇叭瓶). Coffee, thick and lovely, costs US $2.50 a cup. ____18____
Getting around Paris is easy and inexpensive. Walking is the best way to feel the street-life but when you start to tire, take the train. Subway tickets for anywhere across the city cost around a dollar a trip and even less if you buy a multiple-ticket book. ____19____ All the maps and signposts are easy to understand.
____20____ Passes can be bought at major subway stations and elsewhere. The Louvre is an absolute must to visit. The Eiffel Tower gives a great view of the city for less than US $10. You can’t miss the street architecture, the surrounding atmosphere and the daily goings-on in Paris. More importantly, they cost nothing or little to explore and experience.
A. The system is quick and efficient.
B. The breakfast features a local flavor.
C. But some people are worried about the high cost.
D. The admissions to Paris’ attractions are not costly.
E. Quality wine and tasty food are tough on the budget.
F. The rooms with small bathrooms are clean and basic.
G. That totals less than $15 per person for dinner and drinks.
【答案】16. C 17. F 18. G 19. A 20. D

We can start with small things around us. We should save water and electricity and avoid unnecessary waste. It is better to walk or ride bikes than take private cars. Also, we need to sort rubbish and recycle reusable materials.
Let’s take action from now on. Every small effort counts and will make our school and planet greener.

My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” She added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh? I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.

A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 That night, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details. I decided to design a gentle reminder app especially for the elderly. I listed simple functions: important dates, daily tasks, and warm notes. I focused on making the words big and the buttons easy to touch. Whenever I felt stuck, I thought of Mrs. Thompson’s kind smile and her wish for something to help her remember. I carefully tested every part again and again, making sure it was simple and helpful. Deep in my heart, I hoped this little app could bring convenience and warmth to her and more elderly people.
A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis. I introduced the app’s purpose and showed how it worked. Ms. Davis praised my thoughtful idea and spoke highly of my project. After class, I brought the app to Mrs. Thompson. She was delighted and tried it at once. “This is exactly what I need,” she said happily. Watching her smile, I truly understood what Ms. Davis had meant: coding is not just code, but a way to use technology to care for others.

C. Curious. D. Favorable.
