Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of TCM -- Traditional Chinese Medicine (中医). In the winter of 2023, she took part in a related training course at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Jin’s life has been different since the training. After learning the Five Elements theory (五行学说), she changed her life habits. For example, she stopped sweating (流汗) too much during exercise in winter. As the cold of winter means people should slow down according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about embracing a new lifestyle and living her life better.
She is not an unusual example of young people becoming interested in TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people who took part had tried different TCM treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor.
Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM because it is effective, according to Ma. Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions (处方). “This is actually an advantage of TCM, as it gives more accurate treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are embracing TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Jin noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture.”
In our daily lives, we can also explore and experience the charm of TCM, cherishing the traditional culture of our country and taking care of our own health at the same time.
19. Which can explain the underlined word “embracing” best in paragraph 1?
A. refuse B. hug C. miss

A. 933. B. 1000. C. 93.3.
21. Why do young people often choose TCM over Western medicine?
A. Because TCM is more expensive.
B. Because TCM is more effective.
C. Because TCM is more modern.

Paper cutting, one of China’s oldest traditional arts, began over 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty. At first, it was popular in royal palaces where paper was unusual and valuable. By the 7th-13th centuries, it became common in festivals. Later, it spread to other countries like those in the Middle East.
In the past, paper cutting was mainly a skill for women. Girls learned it at an early age, and they were even judged by how well they could do paper cutting. Today, experienced artists are often men working in workshops.
Paper cuttings are used to decorate doors and windows, especially during holidays like the Spring Festival. They stand for good luck, health, and happiness. For example, a fish pattern means “wealth” because the Chinese word for fish (鱼) sounds like “surplus” (余). They also tell stories about people’s daily lives and dreams.
There are two main ways to make paper cuttings. One is with scissors: Fold the paper and cut shapes. Most patterns are symmetrical (对称的) because of folding. The other is with knives: Artists place paper on a wooden board and create detailed designs. This method is now widely used.
Though almost lost in the 19th century because of wars, paper cutting remains a treasure of Chinese culture today.
23. How does the writer show the development of paper cutting in the first paragraph?
A. By telling a moving story.
B. By describing changes over time.
C. By asking and answering questions.
24. Fish patterns are common in paper cuttings probably because ________.
A. they are symbols of bravery
B. they are easy to cut with scissors

A. Two main ways to make paper cuttings.
B. Paper cuttings with scissors are symmetrical.
C. The method of paper cuttings with knives is useful.
26. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A travel guide. B. A personal diary. C. A cultural magazine.

On a farm lived a father and a son. The father always got up early and read books outside the house. One morning, the son came up to his father and complained (抱怨), “Dad, I read books at night, but I forget most of what I read by the next morning. What’s the good of reading?”
The father didn’t answer the question. He gave his son a basket that was used to carry coal (煤). He said, “Get water from the river with the basket and then I’ll tell you the answer.” The son felt surprised, but he did as his father told. He tried many times but every time the water leaked (漏) out from the basket. An hour later, the son came back with nothing and told his father it was impossible to get water with the basket. The father smiled and said, “You’re right, my son. A basket can’t hold water. But look at the basket closely. Has it changed at all?” The son then noticed that the dirty basket had become clean. The father continued, “Reading is like carrying water with the basket. ________.”
27. Why did the son complain on that morning?

【答案】例文
An Unforgettable Experience in Junior High School
One of my most unforgettable experiences in junior high school was participating in the school sports day. I was nervous about running the 100-meter race, but with the encouragement of my friends, I decided to give it my best shot. Although I didn’t win, I felt proud of myself for overcoming my fear and trying my hardest.
From this experience, I learned the importance of courage and perseverance. Even if the outcome isn’t perfect, the effort itself is valuable. It taught me to face challenges with confidence and to never give up.
In the future, I hope to continue embracing new challenges and growing stronger with each experience. I believe that every step forward, no matter how small, brings me closer to my goals.

A. refuse B. hug C. miss
20. According to the survey by China Youth Daily, how many young people had tried different TCM treatments?
A. 933. B. 1000. C. 93.3.
21. Why do young people often choose TCM over Western medicine?
A. Because TCM is more expensive.
B. Because TCM is more effective.
C. Because TCM is more modern.
22. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. TCM is only suitable for elderly people.
B. Western medicine is better than TCM for treating illnesses.
C. Young people are embracing TCM for its effectiveness and cultural value.

C. they sound like the word for “surplus”
25. What’s the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. Two main ways to make paper cuttings.
B. Paper cuttings with scissors are symmetrical.
C. The method of paper cuttings with knives is useful.
26. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A travel guide. B. A personal diary. C. A cultural magazine.
