not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years,my mom had been supportive.Strength and protection had
always flowed from her to me.Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer,she armed herself with a
notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell

every chemo treatment. She hardly complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and

Being a teenager can be challenging, but it can also be exciting. You're gradually losing
dependence on parents and making decisions for yourself. You are also learning to take risks and
solve problems better than you could before. And changes are happening throughout your body,
even in your brain.
You can't see the changes in your brain, but they're influencing how you develop into an adult.
At this time in your life, there is a process going on inside your brain that makes it work faster and
more efficiently.Imagine that the inside of your brain is like a big road map. There are lots of roads
leading to different destinations ()When you were a child,as you learned new things, your
brain created more roads leading to different destinations.By the time you become a teenager, the
most important places on the map have many different roads leading to them. Now your brain's job
is to make that map more efficient. It removes the roads that you don't need and works to make the
other roads faster.
As a result, your experiences as a teenager actually influence the way that your brain develops.
If you spend hours playing video games, what skills do you use?You learn to see something with
your eyes and react to it with your hands, right? As you develop those skills, your brain is making
sure that the roads leading to them are especially fast and efficient. So,your video game playing
could be preparing you for a career such as a fighter pilot,or even a dentist.
This is a great time for you to practice new skills and discover what you're good at and what
you love doing.Go out and try different activities, and stick with them if you think they're useful.

26.What's the main idea of the passage?

After years of heated discussion, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park
Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park.By last year, the Yellowstone
wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the
continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development.By the 1920s,
wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the
deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results.Deer and elk populations, the
main food sources (for the wolf, grew rapidly. These animals ate large amounts of vegetation
()which made plant diversity less in the park.In the absence of wolves, coyote populations
also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park's red foxes, and completely
drove away the park's beavers.
As early as 1966,biologists asked the govemment to consider reintroducing gray wolves to
Yellowstone Park. They hoped that these gray wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote
problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm
animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The
U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone.
Today, the discussion continues over how well the gray wolfis fitting in at Yellowstone.Elk,deer,
and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The
Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to
reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.Wildlife research in the United States.
B.Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.

A.tested
B.separated.
C.forced out.
D.helped out.

A.Harm to local ecosystem.
B.A fall in the percentage of coyotes.
C.Protection of vegetation.
D.An increase in animals'population.
30.What is the author's attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?

antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his

jumped in from the window and he couldn't drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced
around the living room and finally her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she
left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However,in the face of her son's nervous
eyes and the doubtful looks of the other family members,Ben's mother remained calm. She realized
she shouldn't just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed,the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the
study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but,as he had already lied,he was
determined to hide the truth to the end,no matter how angry his mum became.

读后续写:(参考范文)
The mother said."This chocolate is a reward for your imagination:a window-opening
cat !Though a little surprised,Ben stood straight and defended himself,"Mom,it was the cat!I
promise."Forcing a smile, the mother reached for another chocolate and passed it to the boy,"A
reward for your perfect repair work!"Staring at the chocolates, the boy hesitated but still continued
to hide the truth. Before he could say anything,a third chocolate appeared in his hand, with his
mom's soft voice "And this one is for your bravery. You are brave enough to stick to your decision."
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy's bad attitude disappeared. It seemed that
everything was all at Mom's fingertips.Speechless, the boy lowered his head in shame and told the
truth."Mom,I'm so sorry that I broke your vase and lied to you.I was too terrified because it's
your favourite vase."Relieved and delighted, the mother held him in her arms and whispered,
"Good boy..It's never too late to mend."Handing the chocolate box to the boy,Mom said
delightedly,"These ones are all for your honesty,my boy!Do remember that honesty values more
than any antique.”
The mother said,"This chocolate is a reward for your imagination:a window-opening cat!
"Hearing her sincere appreciation,Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank you.
Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand."This one is for the
delicate repair work you did to the broken vase."She also added that she was moved by how much
the boy cherished the family possession. At these hearty remarks,Ben felt a flow of shame through
his veins, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward
himself with more chocolates for other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as he was told
to,confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.
Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy's bad attitude disappeared. His palm and
forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time,he looked up
at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked
for punishment."I'm sorry I lied to you,Mum.Please take back the chocolates."Feeling so
ashamed,Ben couldn't hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolates.
To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole box of chocolates in his hand,
smiling."Honesty deserves the best reward,my dear."
