Everyone was enjoying the beautiful weather that morning. Some people were swimming in the sea, and some were relaxing on the beach. But while Tilly was walking along the beach with her family, she noticed something strange. Thick white froth was forming on top of the waves. Next, she saw that the waves were coming in instead of going out. Just then, she remembered something important. Two weeks before, her geography teacher had explained that earthquakes under the sea could create dangerous waves called tsunamis! “I know what’s going to happen! There’s going to be a big wave,” Tilly cried. Unfortunately, her family didn’t believe her and wanted to continue their walk. However, Tilly refused to take a single step further. Finally, her mother decided to continue the walk alone, and the rest of her family returned to the hotel. Back at the hotel, Tilly’s father told a security guard about the tsunami. The security guard was shocked. He knew about the huge earthquake in nearby Indonesia. It meant that a tsunami was possible! He jumped into action right away and rushed to get people off the beach. Everyone began to panic. People were screaming and running as fast as they could when they saw a huge wall of water coming from the sea. Tilly was right! Her mother was one of the last people on the beach, but thankfully, her family made it to safety just as the water hit the hotel. The 2004 tsunami caused over 200,000 deaths, but no one on the beach died that day. This true story shows how a single lesson could mean the difference between life and death. Thanks to her knowledge and quick thinking, one schoolgirl was able to save over 100 lives. ( )41.When did Tilly Smith notice something strange about the sea? A. While she was swimming in the sea. B. To praise Tilly’s knowledge and quick thinking, and show the importance of learning. D. To explain why no one died on that beach that day. ( )44.What can we infer about the writer’s attitude towards Tilly Smith? A. The writer thinks she was just lucky. B. The writer admires her for her bravery and quick thinking. C. The writer feels sorry for her because she was scared. D. The writer thinks she should have acted faster. ( )45. What does the story mainly teach us? A. We should always listen to children’s advice. B. Learning school knowledge can help save lives in real danger. C. Tsunamis are very dangerous and we should never go to the beach. D. Family members don’t always believe what you say. C Storm Chasing: A Dangerous but Important Job Are you afraid of big storms? Many people are. But did you know some people go out to chase tornadoes(龙卷风)? Such storms can hit suddenly and move very quickly, so storm chasers(追赶者) always have to be prepared. When a tornado is about to hit, professional storm chasers try and get close to it to collect important information. Storm chaser Tim Samaras designed and built many different instruments for studying tornadoes. Throughout his career, the engineer chased down more than 120 tornadoes. Often, he filmed the storms while they were happening just a few kilometres away. During a storm, storm chasers put special equipment in the way of the tornado. The equipment collects information about things such as wind speed and air pressure. This helps scientists to make better forecasts. It can even help people understand how powerful the winds can be, and as a result, change how we build our houses. Storm chasing can be exciting, but also very dangerous. The storm chasers’ knowledge and experience are not always enough to keep them safe. On 31 May 2013, Samaras and his team were chasing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, USA. To their surprise, the tornado behaved in an unexpected way. It grew rapidly and changed its speed and direction. On that terrible day, the largest tornado ever recorded appeared. It was 4.2 kilometres wide and had winds topping 480 kilometres per hour. While the tornado was moving towards them, Samaras and his team were driving as fast as they could. Sadly, when the tornado hit their car, it threw their car into the air like a toy. All three men in the car died. The story of Tim Samaras is very sad, but his work continues to play an important role in weather science. Though storm chasing remains a dangerous job, the goal of storm chasers is to learn more about storms to keep people safe. For people like Samaras, that goal makes it all worth it. ( )46. Why do storm chasers get close to tornadoes? A. To take exciting photos for fun. B. To collect important information about storms. C. To test how fast their cars can drive. D. To show people how brave they are. ( )47. The underlined word “forecasts” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______. A. predictions of the weather B. reports about car accidents C. instructions for building houses D. studies of different instruments ( )48.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? A. How Tim Samaras became a famous storm chaser. B. Why tornadoes in Oklahoma are the largest in the world. C. The excitement of storm chasing. D. The danger of storm chasing, using Samaras’ experience as an example. ( )49.Which of the following is TRUE about the El Reno tornado in 2013? A. It was the smallest tornado ever recorded. B. It moved at a speed of 48 kilometres per hour. C. It changed its speed and direction unexpectedly. D. It did not cause any damage to Samaras’ team. ( )50.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Storm chasing is no longer dangerous because of Samaras’ work. B. Samaras’ work has no value since he died in the tornado. C. Storm chasers risk their lives to help keep people safe. D. All people agree that storm chasing is worth the danger. 第三节 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。 In August 2022, China experienced a great heatwave. But as we go about our everyday lives, we often forget about it. In fact, climate change is already affecting some of our favourite foods and drinks, and it might make us change what we eat and drink soon. Many people start their day with a cup of coffee, but rising temperatures may make them give up their habit. Warmer weather is making it easier for fungus (真菌) to spread (传播) among coffee plants, and some areas are becoming too hot for the plants to grow in. And simply, changing to tea won’t help anything, either, because like coffee plants, tea plants don’t grow well in hot and dry weather. It can change how tea tastes and how much we can get in. Chocolate is at risk, too! Cocoa plants are important for chocolate-making. But the highest temperature that cocoa plants can grow in is around 32°C. If it keeps getting hotter, we could lose them by the year 2050. Climate change also affects important crops (农作物) like wheat, corn, and rice. A large number of people in the world depend on these foods to live. But these crops are in danger because the temperatures are becoming higher. These days, farmers and scientists are working together to grow new crops that need less water and can grow better in changing weather. They have had some success, but we must act quickly. If we don’t stop climate change, we may not have enough food to eat in the future. The 76. ___________caused by climate change Main drinks The weather is making it 77.___________for coffee plants to grow in some areas. Hot and dry weather will affect the 78.___________of tea plants as well. Important crops The crops are in danger because of 79.___________temperatures. "I know what's going to happen! There's going to be a big wave,"Tilly cried.Unfortunately, her family didn't believe her and wanted to continue their walk. However,Tilly refused to take a single step further. Finally, her mother decided to continue the walk alone, and the rest of her family returned to the hotel. C Storm Chasing:A Dangerous but Important Job Are you afraid of big storms? Many people are.But did you know some people go out to chase tornadoes 卷风)?Such storms can hit suddenly and move very quickly,so storm chaserst(追赶者)always have to be prepared. When a tornado is about to hit, professional storm chasers try and get close to it to collect important information.Storm chaser Tim Samaras designed and built many different instruments for studying tornadoes. Throughout his career, the engineer chased down more than 120 tornadoes.Often,he filmed the storms while they were happening just a few kilometres away. During a storm, storm chasers put special equipment in the way of the tornado. The equipment collects information about things such as wind speed and air pressure. This helps scientists to make better forecasts. It can even help people understand how powerful the winds can be,and as a result, change how we build our houses. Storm chasing can be exciting, but also very dangerous. The storm chasers'knowledge and experience are not always enough to keep them safe.On 31 May 2013,Samaras and his team were chasing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma,USA.To their surprise, the tornado behaved in an unexpected way.It grew rapidly and changed its speed and direction. On that terrible day,the largest tornado ever recorded appeared. It was 4.2 kilometres wide and had winds topping 480 kilometres per hour. While the tornado was moving towards them,Samaras and his team were driving as fast as they could.Sadly, when the tornado hit their car,it threw their car into the air like a toy.All three men in the car died. The story of Tim Samaras is very sad,but his work continues to play an important role in weather science Though storm chasing remains a dangerous job,the goal of storm chasers is to learn more about storms to keep people safe. For people like Samaras, that goal makes it all worth it.
