Passage B
Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable (不可思议的) sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply (仅仅) turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
5. Where is this passage most probably from?
A. A storybook. B. An art magazine. C. A guidebook. D. A science magazine.
6. How can a certain kind of ants find their way?
A. By imagining the way. B. By counting their steps.
C. By bringing food together. D. By walking through a forest.
7. What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph?
A. To help animals. B. To travel at night.
C. To keep city lights on. D. To develop unusual abilities.

A. Birds Sense of Light B. Fish’s Sense of Smell
C. Animals’ Sense of Direction D. Animals’ Sense of Magnetic Field

In a history class, Mrs Bartlett asked the students to make a poster in groups. She told the students to write the names of three friends they wanted in one group and she would think about their choices.
The next day, Karma was told to be in a group she would never want—the boy who was too weak in English, and the two girls who wore strange clothes. Oh, how she wanted to be with her friends! With tears in her eyes, Karma walked up to Mrs Bartlett. She looked at Karma and seemed to know what Karma was there for. Karma said that she should be in the “good” group. The teacher gently placed a hand on Karma’s shoulder. “I know what you want, Karma,” she said. “But your group needs you. I need you to help them. Only you can help them.” Karma was surprised and moved. The teacher’s words encouraged her.
“Will you help them?” the teacher asked. “Yes,” Karma replied. Then she bravely walked over to her group. She sat down and they started. Halfway through the week, Karma felt herself enjoying her group. They did a good job together. The group members weren’t thought to be excellent just because no one cared enough about them except Mrs Bartlett.
At last, the group got an A, but Karma thought they should hand the A back to Mrs Bartlett. She was the one who should truly receive it. Mrs Bartlett brought out the potential in the four of her students.

No matter who we are, where we are, or what we do, we cannot live without water. It is the source (源泉) of all life and we need it every day. But in truth we’re facing serious water problems.
Although water covers 71 percent of earth’s surface, “We can only use a very small amount of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh water (淡水). A survey from the United Nations shows that there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home.
To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first established World Water Day in 1993. It is held on March 22 each year. In 2017 the UN raised a theme—“Wastewater”.
According to the UN, wastewater problems make water shortages (短缺) even more serious. Most of the wastewater from our homes, cities and industries goes directly back to nature. Instead of letting it pollute the environment, the industries need to treat it first.
China takes action to deal with water problems, too. From March 22 to 28 is the China Water Week. During this period, the Chinese government starts a “river chiefs (负责人)” project.
Just as every province, city and county (县) has a leader, every river in China will have a chief, too. Local government heads will be river chiefs. They will be responsible for all the rivers and lakes in their places. They need to make sure that industries have already treated the wastewater. And they also need to clean up the polluted waters before they go into nature.
13. Why does the writer mention the survey from the United Nations?
A. To speak highly of the importance of the survey.
B. To tell people we need to make more fresh water.
C. To prove there isn’t much drinking water on earth.
D. To show many people walk a long way to get water.
14. What similar steps have China and the UN taken to solve water problems?
A. Stopping industries from pouring dirty water directly.
B. Doing more surveys about how to save water.
C. Letting governments deal with water problems.
D. Starting World Water Day to stop wasting water.
15. How is the text organized? (①= Paragraph 1,②= Paragraph 2,……)
A. B. C. D.
16. What is the main idea of this text?
A. Most countries fail to solve water problems.
B. Countries have taken steps to protect water.
C. China calls on other countries to save water.
D. Industries are the main cause for wastewater.

四、阅读与表达 (共4小题, 41~43小题,每小题2分, 44小题4分,满分10分)
At an early age, we start learning how to manage money by watching our parents’ spending habits. Don’t worry if we haven’t learned well how to save or spend money. The following life lessons about money can help us form good spending habits.
Money doesn’t grow on trees. As kids, we don’t often think about where money comes from. We need to know that our parents work hard to make money, and that it may be used up one day. Going to their workplaces to watch how they work is a great way to understand that money is not that easy to make.
We shouldn’t spend all our money in one go. It’s important for us to have a budget (预算). In other words, we need to think about how much money we have, and decide what we really want to spend it on. Realizing that our pocket money can’t cover everything we want, we should make smart spending choices.
We should set a clear goal and watch our money grow. If we wish to own a new bicycle but can’t afford it, we can save our pocket money. How? Write down how much money we have in a notebook and watch it grow. After we have enough, we can buy that wonderful bicycle we’ve dreamed about! Reaching our goal will greatly satisfy (满足) us.
We can talk with our parents about how money is used and where money goes. Do you know what a bank account is? If not, communicate with our parents. We can also go to the supermarket with our parents to experience how money is spent in the real world.
Without doubt, we should treat money in the right way. Actually, learning about money isn’t a hard job. From these lessons, we can get a sense of money management and right money values step by step!
41. Why is it a great way for children to visit their parents’ workplaces to watch how they work?

Dear Mike,
I understand how you feel. It’s normal to feel stressed before exams. Here are some suggestions to help you.
Please take it easy. Don’t worry about the result as long as you work hard. Never spend all your time studying, especially when you feel stressed. I usually do something I like to relax myself, such as listening to music and going for a walk. You can have a try. Try to find out what you are weak in. Then you can make a study plan to improve it. You can save a lot of time in this way.
Trouble is like a friend and it can make you stronger. Be brave to face it! I hope you’ll become happy soon!
Yours,
Li Hui
