Li Rui: Hello, George.李锐：你好，乔治。

George: Hi, Li Rui. Guess what? My father, Bob, and I are going to visit your hometown. Could you be our guide?乔治：嗨，李锐。你猜怎么着？我爸爸鲍勃和我打算去你的家乡看看。你能当我们的向导吗？

Li Rui: Sure! I'd love to!李锐：当然可以！我很乐意！

George: Wonderful! You know, my father's last visit was about 20 years ago. He became a good friend of your grandfather.乔治：太棒了！你知道，我爸爸上一次来这里还是大约20年前。他和你爷爷成了好朋友。

Li Rui: Grandpa will be so happy. They haven't seen each other for ages!李锐：爷爷一定会非常开心的。他们好久没见了！

George: Life is much easier!乔治：生活真是方便多了！

Li Rui: Not only that. We used to have to travel far to see a doctor, but now our town has built a new hospital.李锐：不止这些。以前我们看病要跑很远的路，现在镇上建了一所新医院。

Bob: Great! And didn't I see a supermarket down the street?鲍勃：太棒了！我刚才在街上是不是看到一家超市了？

Li Rui: Yes. We didn't have any good places for shopping until 10 years ago.李锐：有的。10年前，我们这儿还没有像样的购物场所呢。

Bob: But the biggest change is on the hills. They used to be covered with sand.鲍勃：但变化最大的还是那些山。以前山上全是沙子。

Li Rui: And now they have been covered with beautiful trees!李锐：现在已经种满了漂亮的树！

Bob: I'm amazed by how green your hometown has become!鲍勃：你的家乡变得这么绿，我真是太惊讶了！

Grandpa: Have you seen the corn fields outside of the town yet?爷爷：你们看到镇外的玉米地了吗？

Bob: Yeah! They're huge!鲍勃：看到了！好大一片！

Grandpa: There used to be sandstorms all the time, and the fields were getting smaller and smaller. Then, after one big sandstorm, we decided to do something.爷爷：以前这里经常刮沙尘暴，田地也越来越少。后来，一场大沙尘暴过后，我们决定做点改变。

Bob: What did you do?鲍勃：你们做了什么？

Grandpa: We found a small bush. It had long roots that could hold the soil together. We began planting it in sandy areas. The government provided support too.爷爷：我们发现了一种小灌木，它的根很长，能把土壤牢牢固定住。我们开始在沙地上种这种灌木，政府也提供了支持。

Bob: Wasn't it difficult to plant so many bushes?鲍勃：种这么多灌木不困难吗？

Grandpa: Yes, it was. At the beginning, we worked by hand. Later, we had machines to help. We have planted many bushes and trees since then. There are fewer sandstorms now and the environment is getting better. It has also improved our lives. Everyone has become richer and happier.爷爷：确实很困难。一开始我们都是手工种，后来才有了机器帮忙。从那以后，我们种了很多灌木和树。现在沙尘暴少了，环境也变好了，我们的生活也跟着改善了，大家都过得更富裕、更幸福了。

Ms Gao: Class, who do you admire the most? Yes, Yaming?高老师：同学们，你们最敬佩的人是谁？亚明，你来说说？

Yaming: I really admire Yuan Longping. It was great of him to develop a new kind of rice and help reduce hunger.亚明：我非常敬佩袁隆平。他培育出了新型水稻，帮助缓解了饥饿问题，太了不起了。

Ms Gao: That's great! Yuan Longping also trained many people to do research on farming in China and other parts of the world. Who else inspires you? Yes, Peter?高老师：说得真好！袁隆平还培养了很多人，在中国乃至世界各地开展农业研究。还有谁激励着你们？彼得，你说？

Peter: I admire Michael Faraday very much. It was amazing that he did scientific research in physics and chemistry even though he didn't receive a formal education.彼得：我非常敬佩迈克尔·法拉第。他没有接受过正规教育，却能在物理和化学领域开展科学研究，太令人惊叹了。
