The Mariana Trench is the deepest place on Earth. It is in the western Pacific Ocean, not far from the Mariana Islands. For many years, it has been one of the most amazing wonders of nature, and many people want to know more about this secret place.
The trench is very long and deep. Its deepest part is called Challenger Deep. It is about 11,000 meters below the sea. If we put Mount Qomolangma, the highest mountain in the world, into the trench, the top of the mountain will still be under the water. It is hard to imagine how deep it is!
Life in the Mariana Trench is not easy. Sunlight cannot reach the bottom, so it is very dark all the time. The water is very cold, nearly freezing all year. The water pressure is so high that people cannot stand it. Without strong and special submersibles, we cannot go down to the deep bottom at all.
Although the environment is very hard, some small sea animals still live there. They look strange and have special abilities to live in cold water and high pressure. Some can even make light in the dark to find food. They show us how strong life can be, even in the worst environment.
Scientists began to study the Mariana Trench more than 100 years ago. In 1960, two brave men first went down to the deepest point in a submersible. Today, we use modern machines and robots to take photos and collect information. By studying the trench, scientists learn more about the sea, the Earth, and the secret of life under the water.

When it comes to warm-weather activities that are good for your health, you probably think of walking, hiking or running. But there’s another beloved activity—gardening.
A busy day in the garden can be a good form of exercise. It is helpful for your physical health. People breathe deeper when they are outside. As people breathe deeper, the oxygen (氧气) level in their blood slowly increases, making them feel refreshed.
Spending time outdoors has been shown to help lift spirits and lower levels of stress (压力). After a working day in the hospital, I would spend an hour or so in my garden. I find that pulling weeds (杂草) can be calming after a long day. It provides me with the chance to slow down, plan or work out a problem in my mind.
Gardening can also bring people together and make social connections stronger. The gardening community is rich with people willing to share their knowledge, time and sometimes plants with new gardeners. Many gardening friendships begin with celebrating a success or regretting a gardening mistake. The friendships that I’ve made have been the best gift that gardening has given me. During the spring, my friends and neighbors plan our vegetable gardens together. We discuss what works well or needs to be improved from last year. In summer, we share flowers with each other. In the fall, we host a big party to enjoy the fruits or vegetables together. These activities improve the joy we get out of the garden and bring us closer together.
21. Which of the following shows the change of the blood oxygen level? (d=depth of breathing, b=blood oxygen level)
A. B. C. D.
22. How does the writer show his idea in Paragraph 3?
A. With a news story. B. With research results.
C. With ideas of scientists. D. With his own experience.
23. What does the writer like best about gardening?
A. He can get plants from other new gardeners.
B. He doesn’t have regrets about his life any more.
C. He makes friends with people with the same interest.
D. He becomes skillful at growing fruits and vegetables.
24. What is the text mainly talking about?
A. The steps of gardening. B. The kindness of gardeners.
C. The advantages of gardening. D. The close connections of gardeners.

How to Deal with Negative Emotions
For middle school students, heavy study pressure is the main cause of these bad feelings. It is very important to learn to deal with them properly.
First, we can make a clear study plan to manage our time well, which can reduce stress a lot. Second, talking with friends, parents or teachers is a good way to let out bad moods. We can also listen to music, do exercise or get enough sleep to relax. Besides, keeping a positive attitude and traveling on weekends can help us cheer up.
Learning to control negative emotions not only helps us reduce stress, but also stops us from making more problems.
