I had a bad stutter (口吃). It was difficult for me to talk fluently. My parents were worried about me, so they found many specialists (专家) for my speech over the years. They were not helpful at all. On my way to meeting a new specialist, I still had the painful memories of being a stuttering kid. It was hurtful when I was young.
“Hello! I’m Mrs. Claussen. I hear you’re from Texas!”
“Ye-Ye-Ye-Yes, I a-a-a-a-am.” My heart was pounding (狂跳) and my hands were shaking. I would like to say something but I couldn’t speak out the words.
“Well, I also like Texas,” she said with a kind smile.
She was the best speech specialist I’d ever met. She was different. She didn’t tell me to clap my hands while speaking.
For the first several weeks, she just talked to me—asking me all kinds of questions about me, especially my feelings. And she listened to me carefully. She then started to teach me about speech.
During the next two years, my speech didn’t get much better—except with her. When I was in college, things got worse. I was unable to stop my stutter. But when I was feeling really sorry for myself, I remembered Mrs Claussen had told me that whether I could change my speech was all up to me. She had told me not to fight for perfect speech, just better speech. She kept encouraging me to get back up whenever I fell. She told me not to give up so easily. And with her aid, I finally improved my speech greatly. I’ll never forget her help.

Imagine you are in an autonomous vehicle (AV, 自动驾驶车辆) and face this terrible choice: If the car turns left, it will hit an 8-year-old girl. If it turns right, it will hit many walkers. On top of this “moral (道德的) dilemma”, if the car doesn’t turn, you could be in danger. It is difficult to make a decision between two or more choices. What decision would you want the car to make?
When AVs face dangerous situations, should they save people in the car first or walkers? Should they care more about the public good (集体利益) than one person’s safety? These questions have been under discussion for years, but there is no perfect answer.
“A moral dilemma has no clear answer,” Derek Leben said, a professor at the Tepper School of Business, US.
Iyad Rahwan, an MIT scientist studied these questions. He found out that people often think about their own safety first. “People buying these cars, they want cars to protect the passengers themselves. But they want other people’s cars to protect walkers instead.”
AVs bring not only moral dilemmas but also problems with rules. If there is an accident, who should be responsible is not an easy question.
In July 2024, a self-driving taxi by Baidu hit a walker in Wuhan, Hubei, who ran a red light. Baidu worked with the police and took the walker to the hospital. In another accident in Seattle, US. In April 2024, the “driver” should be responsible according to the traffic rules, because he was talking on his phone while in the full self-driving mode (自动驾驶模式).
“The situations of different accidents caused by AVs are so complex (复杂的) that it’s hard to make very clear laws about it. We are always waiting for them,” said Ji Xuchong, a researcher from North China University of Technology.
32. Which of the following sentences can we put “dilemma” in?
A. She faced a ________ of accepting the job abroad or staying with her family.
B. Her biggest ________ was forgetting to turn off the light yesterday.
C. The advice from his teacher brought a positive ________ for his research.
D. The teacher gave us a fun ________ to solve in groups during class.
33. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to make safe self-driving cars.
B. Famous accidents of self-driving cars.
C. A study about people’s driving habits.
D. Moral and rule problems of self-driving cars.
34. What might be Ji Xuchong’s opinion in the last paragraph?
A. There should be clearer laws for self-driving car accidents.
B. It is easy to decide who is responsible for the accidents.
C. Self-driving cars should not be used on the road.
D. All accidents are caused by the car companies.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?

Nowadays, celebrity (名人) worship (崇拜) is very common among teenage students. Many teenagers have their favorite stars and look up to them as role models. This popular trend (趋势) brings both happy feelings and small troubles to their daily school life.
Some teenagers feel stressed and upset because they spend too much time and energy on following their celebrities. They even fail to manage their study well and spend too much time chatting with friends about celebrities. It is necessary for them to control these negative emotions and actions and get over these small problems.
Good celebrities can greatly inspire teenagers. Many stars work hard, are strict with themselves and never give up their dreams. These good qualities help teenagers make small but meaningful achievements in study and life. They also learn to reduce study pressure and pull together with classmates when doing group projects.
Teenagers should enjoy celebrity worship in the right way. They can talk about celebrities with friends once in a while, but never let it influence their normal life. When life feels stressful and things are out of your control, negative thinking often appears. Feelings of sadness, disappointment and self-doubt come along. That’s why such negative thinking needs to be dealt with. However, there are many things you can do when you have negative thinking.
First, try a “No Complaining” challenge. You can decide not to complain for a whole week. If you complain at any time, you have to start counting from Day 1 again. You may be surprised to find how much time you waste on things you cannot change.
Second, stop asking “what if” questions about bad things. Instead, ask yourself, “What if everything works out well?” When you feel worried, use the same energy to think about good results.
Third, follow the 10-Second Rule. When a negative thought comes to your mind, take 10 seconds to decide whether you should care about it. Ask yourself: Is this thought helpful? Can I do anything about it right now? If not, just let it go.
Finally, stop imagining terrible things in your mind. If you always think about the worst situations, you will only expect disappointment. Instead, try to imagine that things will go well.
It is not easy to change your way of thinking. But if you put in time to practice, you can surely make progress. Be patient and kind to yourself!

例文
Dear Jack,
I’m sorry to hear that you have been under great pressure and feeling low these days. I’m quite worried about you and totally understand how you feel. It’s really necessary for you to relax and go out to enjoy nature.
To reduce stress, I usually go on an outing with friends, do yoga or chat with my close friends. When I’m in low spirits, I take a deep breath, look on the bright side and try to control my emotions. I never stay upset for long and don’t be too hard on myself, which helps me keep positive.
China has countless amazing natural wonders. I love Jiuzhaigou best. It has clear blue lakes, lush forests and fantastic waterfalls. It’s so beautiful that it attracts millions of travellers every year. Walking there will make you forget all worries.
I hope you can take care of yourself, cheer up soon and go out to explore nature. You will surely feel much better and stay healthy.
Yours,
Li Hua
