Saying that those two weeks were an unexpected journey is no exaggeration (夸张). When I applied for a spot on an exchange program in Chengdu, I never thought I’d actually be selected. Before going to China, my experience of Chinese cuisine was limited to lemon chicken, pot noodles, and fried rice. So, in preparation for my trip to China, I was mentally preparing myself for the worst.
Eating turned out to be a pleasant surprise. When visiting Dujiangyan, three Chinese students took me to a restaurant. I spent about ten minutes using Google Translate to decide what to eat. After deciding what I wanted, I asked for their help with my order. They laughed and said they’d already ordered for the whole table. Sharing is a big part of how food is consumed there. You don’t order for yourself;you all order as a group. Every meal feels like a family dinner. It’s a very warm experience that we all greatly appreciated.
Getting along with others was one of the worrisome thoughts before my arrival although I was repeatedly told by my friends and family that I would make friends for life. It turned out that my doubt was severely misplaced. On the first day of classes, we all got to meet our Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) students who were there to help and guide us, and they all ended up meaning so much more to us. For two weeks, we honestly felt like a big family.
Finally, I wanted to give some advice to any students considering this program. Try to get a SIM card so you are able to access mobile Internet. Learn the basics of the language. You’ll also probably find that you’ll pick up other words along the way. If you are part of the SWUFE program, bring lots of gifts. I didn’t think I would get as close to so many students as I did, so I didn’t pack enough gifts. Travelling can be a little scary but if you just stay calm, you will find that it’s really an enjoyable experience.

Soda, extremely sweet and nutritionally empty, is subject to taxation (征税) in an increasing number of regions. Nowadays, more than 35 countries and 7 cities in the United States have carried out a tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks, a policy driven by mounting public health anxieties over diet-related diseases.
In the United States, nearly 40 percent of adults are obese (肥胖的), which adds $147 billion to the nation’s yearly healthcare spending, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The problem is complex, but the widespread intake of foods packed with added sugar that adds calories while providing no essential nutrients plays a major role, with drinks accounting for nearly half the added sugar in the American diet.
Public health researchers regard soda tax as a low-hanging fruit in the battle against health problems such as obesity. These researchers argue that unlike other public health policies that require long-term education and gradual behavior change, soda tax can directly influence people’s spending decisions by increasing the cost of unhealthy drinks.
Behavioral scientist Christina Roberto from UPenn notes taxes are among the most effective policies to change unhealthy eating habits as such taxation has long been proven to have cut public health risks from alcohol and tobacco use. Yet soda tax may fall short of advocates’ goals. Current tax rates are often too insignificant to reach the price level needed to change purchasing behavior. Consumers may replace sugary drinks with other calorie-rich but nutrient-poor foods, or simply cross city borders to buy untaxed soda in neighboring areas.
While drink tax can cut down on sugary drink consumption, health gains won’t come easy and will take time. Drawing on the experience of tobacco and alcohol taxes — once faced with opposition from the industries — experts suggest that soda tax should be paired with cultural changes, like how anti-smoking laws eventually decreased tobacco intake. Only by combining policies with growing public understanding can we make soda tax truly effective.
28. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain the harm of drinking soda.
B. To advise people to refuse sugary drinks.
C. To show the worldwide obesity problem.
D. To introduce the soda tax policy background.
29. What does the underlined part “a low-hanging fruit” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. An easy-to-carry-out policy.
B. A long-term education plan.
C. A fruit with high nutrition.
D. A costly health measure.
30. What is the key reason for soda tax’s failure to achieve its expected effect?
A. People can’t afford the tax payments.
B. People know well about soda’s harm.
C. The tax rate is too low to change buying habits.
D. Sugary drinks are only sold in some areas.
31. What can be done to make soda tax effective?
A. Cutting down sugary drink supplies. B. Joining hands with certain industries.
C. Making long-term healthcare strategies. D. Raising public awareness alongside policies.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming common, but charging them still takes time. While some new EVs can recharge in about 20 minutes, many need much longer. However, this may soon change.
At an event in Paris on April 8th, BYD, the world’s largest EV maker, showed a new ultra-fast charging system. It uses a 1, 500 kW charger that looks like a large overhead frame. When connected to BYD’s new car model, its 122 kW·h battery can go from 10% to 70% charge in just five minutes. A full charge takes only nine minutes.
How does fast charging work? A charger changes alternating current (AC) from the power grid (电力网) into direct current (DC) that batteries use. Slow overnight charging uses the charger inside the car. But fast charging uses a much more powerful external charger, sending more energy into the battery quickly.
There is a limit, though. In lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries, charged particles called lithium ions move from the cathode to the anode (负极) during charging. If the charge rate is too high, traffic jams of ions can form, creating resistance and harmful heat. BYD says its “Blade Battery” solves this by redesigning electrodes at the molecular (分子) level, using thin parts to reduce internal resistance. The company plans to install 20, 000 of its powerful chargers in China by the end of this year.
Another company, Nyobolt from Britain, takes a different approach. Its 35 kW·h battery can charge from 10% to 80% in under five minutes using an existing 350 kW fast charger. It uses special anodes made of a niobium-tungsten oxide, allowing ions to move faster. Nyobolt’s batteries are already used in data centers and warehouse robots.
Fast charging can cause batteries to lose capacity more quickly, but engineers are solving this. Nyobolt says its batteries have been tested with over 4, 000 fast charges while keeping more than 80% of their capacity. BYD also promises improved durability. Soon, the long wait at charging stations may become a thing of the past.
32. Which is true about BYD’s new charging system?
A. Its full charge for a 122 kW·h battery takes 9 minutes.
B. It uses the car’s internal charger for fast charging.
C. It’s already installed 20, 000 sets in China.
D. It can be applied to all EV models.
33. What can we know about lithium-ion batteries in fast charging?
A. Slow charging causes more ion traffic jams.
B. Ions move freely regardless of charging speed.
C. Internal resistance is irrelevant to ion movement.
D. High charge rate may bring potential safety risks.
34. What is BYD’s solution to the ion “traffic jam” problem during fast charging?
A. It relies only on a more powerful external charger.
B. It replaces lithium-ion with a different chemical material.
C. It avoids heat generation by slowing down the charging rate.
D. It minimizes internal resistance through molecular-level redesign.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of EV ultra-fast charging?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Unconcerned. D. Critical.

How to Find Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures: My Go-To Travel Tips!
Trust Local Recommendations.
When I arrive in a new place, I always ask locals for their favorite places. I’ve found that asking people who live there can uncover gems (宝石) that don’t show up in guidebooks or Instagram posts. Whether it’s a family-run restaurant, a scenic overlook, or a cultural event happening that day, locals can point you to places that offer more than just a typical tourist experience. 36
Explore Smaller Towns and Villages.
While big cities have their charm, I often prefer heading to smaller towns or villages. 37 I’ve found that these hidden spots offer more personal experiences — meeting locals, learning traditions, or simply walking unspoiled streets. A quick search for towns that are near major tourist centers but less well-known can lead you to some hidden treasures.
Follow the Path Less Traveled — Literally.
For me, getting off the beaten path often means hiking or biking my way through a destination. 38 Whether it’s a long hike up a mountain, a bike ride through a national park, or a walk along a beach, stepping into nature always helps me experience a place deeply.
Try Different Travel Tools.
39 I’m a big fan of using travel apps and websites that focus on local experiences, like Atlas Obscura or road trip blogs that share hidden destinations. Apps like Google Maps and TripAdvisor also allow you to focus on less-traveled areas.
Escape the Crowds.
This one’s simple: Once you’ve seen the main attractions, skip the crowds and explore the surrounding areas. 40 Often, the true character of a place can be found in the quieter, lesser-known spots. I’ve made some of my best travel memories by simply taking the road less traveled and embracing the unknown.
A. I always take a map with me.
B. Even hotel staff can often guide you in the right direction.
C. The Internet has so many platforms for discovering new spots.
D. These places are often less crowded, and they hold rich traditions.
E. It is important to check the weather forecast before any outdoor activity.
F. Lesser-known or harder-to-reach routes draw fewer visitors, yet offer amazing views.
G. Stop somewhere unexpected on your way — visit a small museum or a local cultural spot.

Basketball has always been my biggest passion. Every afternoon after class, I would rush to the court with my friends, dribbling (运球), passing, and shooting until the sky turned dark. We ran together, practiced hard, and encouraged each other through every sweat-soaked training session. Making the school basketball team had been my dream for months, and I’d spent so much time improving my skills, fully believing I would get in alongside my best friends.
The day the results came out, my heart was racing with excitement as I headed to the locker room. My knees shook and my body froze the second I stood in front of the wall. It felt like my soul left my body and I lost all control of myself. I nervously stared at the name list, my heart beating faster and faster as I saw all my friends’ names one by one. But mine was nowhere to be found. Everyone was on the list except me. I just couldn’t believe all my friends made the basketball team but I didn’t.
I was sure there was a mistake, so I immediately found the coach. “Coach, is the name list correct?” I asked worriedly.
“Yes. Sorry you didn’t make it this time. Maybe next time,” the coach answered calmly.
Hot tears burned my eyes. I ran out of the room quickly. Just then, I saw my friends walking in to check the list. I heard them shouting and laughing happily as I walked away, their joy cutting through me like a knife.
I felt terrible, as if nothing else mattered. The rest of the school day was unbearable. My steps felt heavy, and I couldn’t focus in class at all. I didn’t care what my teachers were saying. After school, I spotted my friends celebrating together. I quickly took another path to avoid them, with extreme sadness that I was the only one in our group who failed to make the team.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just as I was about to leave quietly, one of my friends noticed me and called my name.
Encouraged by my friends, I decided to try out for the basketball team next time.
