As my kids and I walked around a community garden the other week, I asked them what veggies they could identify. We were in Alberta, where many plants were still in their early stages of growth — I wasn’t optimistic about what the kids would be able to name by leaves alone. However, they called out, “Tomatoes! Potatoes! Carrots!” Their answers made me even prouder than if they’d just explained some knowledge of physics. All the time we’ve spent in our home garden is actually sinking in.
Although I’ve been gardening for years, this year feels different. Spending time in the garden has helped me with my own well-being at a trying time, and it has given me a new way to connect with my kids when I’m running out of steam.
My garden is wild, full of life, and a bit messy. Honestly, the same goes for my kids — and I don’t expect perfection from them either. Unless you’re relying on your yield for money or food, it’s a good idea to have your expectations for gardening as low as possible. My kids say they “love the garden” but “don’t like gardening” — I think they mean they don’t like the chores. If I have some weeding or potting(盆栽) to do, I’ll also have some entertainment for them, which can be as simple as “find these 10 rocks” or “wet this plot(小块土地) with your water gun”.
Involving the kids in every stage of the process can be powerful and fun, even if what you have are just a few containers on a balcony. “Gardening allows us to spend free, unscheduled outdoor time with our kids,” writes journalist and author Shannon Brescher Shea in her book Growing Sustainable Together. “Let your kids lead the way. Invite them to participate in every step, from planting to harvesting, but don’t force it.”
One of the best things about gardens is the food, but frankly, my kids are not going to be pushing greens into their mouths any time soon. Finding uses for garden goods that go beyond food production can spark interest and supply you with some unexpectedly good results.
19. What made the author feel proud in the community garden?
A. Her kids mastered physics knowledge well.
B. Her kids explained plants growth stages clearly.
C. Her kids grew various veggies in the garden.
D. Her kids could recognize vegetables by leaves.
20. What does the author do to draw kids’ attention to gardening?
A. By rewarding them in the end. B. By offering constant encouragement.
C. By including fun activities. D. By letting them take short rests.
21. What can we infer from Shannon Brescher Shea’s words?
A. Kids should be forced by parents to experience gardening.
B. Parents should respect kids’ willingness in gardening.
C. Outdoor activities are much better than indoor ones.
D. Gardening helps kids improve their physical health.
22. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To share the positive influence of gardening on family life.
B. To teach parents how to increase vegetable production.
C. To stress the importance of learning science from nature.
D. To encourage children to do more outdoor activities alone.

Urbanization in Canada is rapidly consuming wildlife habitats. This development not only destroys habitats but also fragments(分裂) them, creating isolated patches that disturb migration and threaten animal populations. Wildlife scientists are studying how animals adapt to these changes, with some species showing remarkable adaptation while others struggle.
The key impacts of urbanization on wildlife, according to John Wilmshurst from the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), include habitat loss, fragmentation, movement barriers like roads and fences, and increased human-wildlife conflicts. Despite these challenges, urban areas offer abundant food sources for wildlife.
Studies on wildlife urbanization raise questions about whether animal behaviors are changing due to habitat loss and the impact of climate change on their environments. Wilmshurst points out that it’s difficult to track species negatively influenced by urbanization, as they often disappear. However, GPS tracking has helped researchers observe how sensitive animals are to urban infrastructure(基础设施).
Some animals, like wolves, avoid people and built-up areas, changing their behaviors to keep clear of urban environments. Others, like bobcats, adapt well to urban life, with some species even passing on these behaviors to their young. Birds have been known to change their song pitches(音高) to adapt to urban soundscapes.
Understanding impact of habitat fragmentation is complex, but Wilmshurst suggests that well-placed landscape management can reduce some negative impacts. This includes changing fences and creating wildlife passages on roads to support animal conservation.
People are also adapting to the presence of wildlife in cities, planting pollinator(授粉昆虫) gardens and diversifying their yards with native plants. Changes in bylaws(地方细则) and building codes, such as keeping cats indoors and reducing bird strikes with glass windows, reflect a growing effort to maintain a connection with nature in urban environments.
The CWF believes that maintaining this connection is crucial for our increasingly urban population. Public policies that help people safely coexist with wildlife in their neighborhoods can improve urban life and support conservation efforts, showing that both humans and wildlife can adapt to the challenges of urbanization.
23. What is the main threat of urbanization to wildlife according to Paragraph 1?
A. Food shortage and climate change.
B. Habitat destruction and fragmentation.
C. Frequent human-wildlife conflicts.
D. Rapid extinction of those rare species.
24. Which of the following shows successful animal adaptation to cities?
A. Wolves stay far away from human activities.
B. Most species decrease their population size.
C. Bobcats adjust well and pass features to babies.
D. Birds stop their singing in noisy urban areas.
25. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Human-wildlife coexistence is achievable in urban areas.
B. New laws have completely solved human-wildlife conflicts.
C. Keeping cats indoors has little effect on bird protection.
D. People prefer some buildings without glass windows.
26. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Wildlife Protection in Canadian Cities
B. Negative Effects of Urbanization on Habitats
C. Wildlife Reactions to Urban Environment
D. Wildlife and Human Adaptation to Urbanization

The privacy screen is an accessory(配件) for phones and laptops designed to significantly darken or totally obscure their surfaces to wandering eyes. At a time when it has become normal to assume a level of comprehensive monitoring in public places — not just by security cameras, but by our fellow travelers — the screen protectors have become a common sight.
This creates a central contradiction: We are willingly giving away tons of data and personal information to tech companies every time we download an application or search online. Yet somehow the stuff we want to keep the person sitting next to us from seeing — our messages or the algorithm-driven content that ends up on our feeds — has become a focus of some people’s privacy concerns. Is it a performance? A grasp for a comforting, yet false, sense of control? Both? Psychologists refer to this mismatch as the “privacy paradox”.
Dennis Stolle, the senior director of American Psychology Association’s Office of Applied Psychology, said the privacy screen was an example of people acting on their value for privacy in a situation where they know they can immediately and noticeably control the space around them. “You can put that privacy screen over your laptop or your phone and feel a sense of accomplishment,” he said. “Even though in the big picture that may be the least of your worries, it still is somehow psychologically satisfying to do something to protect the value that you hold of the importance of privacy rather than doing nothing at all.”
The screen protectors can offer a thin layer of privacy — but they may be only that, a thin layer. “I like the sense of security it gives me, but it doesn’t compare with how my personal data is being used online without my permission. It’s always like a give and take with privacy,” said Mr. Punater, a 23-year-old computer science major at the University of Southern California. “What you choose to give up right now is out of your hands.”
27. What does the underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Hide B. Update C. Repair D. Decorate
28. What do we know about the “privacy paradox” mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. People care little about their personal privacy in daily life.
B. People refuse to use privacy screens though they are helpful.
C. People value privacy but freely offer personal data online.
D. People fully understand the danger of online data collection.
29. What can we infer from Dennis Stolle’s words?
A. Privacy screens effectively protect big data safety.
B. Privacy screens solve the biggest worries in modern life.
C. Doing nothing for privacy is better than taking false measures.
D. People gain psychological satisfaction from small privacy actions.
30. Why does the author quote Mr. Punater’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To persuade readers to give up using privacy screens.
B. To show that privacy screens cannot protect real data.
C. To introduce people’s attitudes toward online privacy.
D. To prove that privacy screens are useful in daily life.
