“Before that, I need to tell you something really important,” I said. “We can talk at the yogurt place,” her mom smiled. “No, I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. “What is it, dear?” she gently asked, closing the door and walking closer to me. Our hands almost touched. “I’m sorry,” I blurted out. “I ... I was talking and laughing with Missi when I spun around and accidentally broke the vase.” I further explained that we saved the pieces but tried in vain to fix it.
Her mom looked at me, saying nothing for what felt like forever. Suddenly, she embraced me, kissing me on both cheeks. “Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase. Now it’s gone! You’ve done me a huge favor!” her mom exclaimed with delight. Although relieved to have apologized, I was still in shock, for this was not at all the reaction I had expected. It wasn’t until I reached my adult years that I recognized what a profound gift her mother’s generosity in welcoming my apology was.

【原文】
W: Good evening, everyone. I recently learnt Arabic in Cairo as part of my degree. My interest in the language was due to the passion of our Arabic lecturer and as the course progressed, my interest in the culture also grew with it. I considered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided on Cairo due to its energetic cultural scene. However, in the city, we faced some challenges, including difficulties finding a hotel and accommodation as we were a group of unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shock was intense for some of us. One member of our group returned home within the first week. Luckily I became accustomed to the life in Cairo gradually. The biggest challenge of learning Arabic is the disconnection between the written and the spoken forms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absorbing myself in the culture and getting to know the locals and even negotiating at a local market. Highlights were being invited to a traditional Arabic meal at one of the locals’ home and being able to confidently communicate. Overall, this experience was outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to learn and grow in interesting ways. I encourage others to consider involving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks for listening.

Bruce Campbell, a retired electrical engineer, wanted to change the behavior of mankind by showing how we can recycle old things into new and practical and livable ones.
For about $220,000, he purchased a Greek airliner — a Boeing 727-400 — that logged about 40,000 flights in its peak. Before Campbell got his hands on his Boeing 727 and transformed it into the airplane home he lives in, this aircraft saw regular use as it transported all kinds of people to all sorts of destinations.
After the successful transform, he hosted a big DJ dance party with a couple of friends. The party, called Turbulence: A Dance Party at a 727 in the Woods, happened right on the wing! Guests who attended the party also got the opportunity to take a look at the airplane home. Overall, they got the attention of 14,000 Facebook users who were interested in what sounded like an incredible party.
This talented engineer got another airliner and started on his second airplane home during the beginning of 2018 on the Kyushu Island coast because he wanted it to serve as a safe place for the local community as well. Part of Bruce Campbell’s vision was to make an airliner that doubled as a lifeboat in case tsunami (海啸) threats were issued. He wanted the general public to find out that planes are capable of surviving hundreds of years and the cruelest weather conditions thanks to its sealed pressure technology.
Campbell adored the excitement that he received when he recycled airplanes and hoped that people would seriously consider it after they got the chance to see his home during tours and events. He has posted on his website that it is his goal to “inspire a renaissance (复兴) of thought about how to employ this remarkable resource”.
24. What drew wide public attention to Campbell’s first transformed plane?
A.The Facebook post of a party held on it. B. Its high residential comfort level.
C.The incredibly high transformation cost. D. Its remarkable transporting capacity.
25. What did Campbell think the second plane could serve as?
A. A tsunami warning center. B. A temporary shelter in disasters.
C.A meeting place for local community. D. An engineering workshop.
26. Why did Campbell transform the planes?
A. To direct attention to housing problems. B. To satisfy his scientific curiosity.
C. To call for participation in recycling. D. To advocate a greener life style.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A.Diverse approaches for sustainable living.
B. Recent trends of renaissance-themed decoration.
C. A talented home designer receiving online fame.
D. A former engineer turning retired planes into home.

Trees don’t look at the calendar to see when spring arrives, but they seem to know when spring is here better than we do. Recently a research takes a look at why trees in cities are turning green earlier than expected. The annual shift from winter to spring is a breathtaking event to watch as leaves become green and a lush(苍翠的)environment reveals itself.
While it may be winter, trees in cities are turning green earlier than expected and one of the reasons is artificial light. City lights brightening the night skies, billboard signs lit up on roadways, and car headlights all contribute to shifting the regular day to night cycle that plants and trees rely on.
In order to stay alive during cruel winters, trees hit the pause button on their growth. Since temperatures can vary dramatically throughout the winter, the length of daylight is the signal trees look for to safely start growing again and turn green.
On average cities are typically 1.8° to 5.4°F warmer than rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect. The changes in city environments may affect seasonal changes even more than climate warming and can affect the allergy(过敏)and mosquito season, water cycles, and also affect pollinators(授粉媒介).
Scientists use satellite imagery to see when plants turn green. By comparing spring green-ups in the 85 largest US cities scientists found that on average trees start to turn green nine days earlier in cities due to the combined effect of urban heat effect and artificial lights.
Despite the worries and concerns, it isn’t all bad news. “With a longer growing season, trees would be able to absorb more carbon dioxide,” a researcher said. “Hopefully they’d have a longer period to do the cooling effect that can help mitigate the urban heat island effect in cities.”
28. Which might be a factor causing trees to turn green earlier according to the text?
A. Devoted care. B. Street lamps.
C. Noise pollution. D. Timely rain.
29. What can we say about the research findings?
A.Urban heat causes trees to green up 9 days earlier on average.
B. The length of daylight influences when trees start growing.
C.Changeable water cycles may cause urban heat island effect.
D.Cities are generally 5.4°F colder than rural areas.30. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Establish. B. Release.
C. Relieve. D.Enhance.
31. In which section of a website can the text be found?
A.Environment. B.Life kit.
C. Education. D. Business.
D
We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours — about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day — at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.
Blue light is a type of electromagnetic (电磁的) radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So do the glasses work?
“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,” Dr. Rahul Khurana, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Business Insider.
Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eyestrain (眼疲劳): More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems, isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So if eyestrain is the issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.
32. What do we know about blue light?
A. It consumes a great deal of energy. B. It may come from electronic devices.
C.It has the shortest wavelength. D.It is a kind of nuclear radiation.
33. What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?
A. Scientific understanding of blue light. B. Widespread use of smart devices.
C. Belief in blue light’s harmful effect. D. Evidence of their benefits to eyes.
34. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. Rubbing eyes makes people strained. B. Blue light may connect with tired eyes.
C. Eye problems are not easy to deal with. D. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.
35. According to the text wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be ______.
A.harmful B. beneficial C. tiring D. useless

When I looked down at the floor, it was full of tiny red, pink and clear glass pieces. Missi said fearfully, “Oh, no, not the vase.”
“Why? What did I do?” My face reddened.
“Amy, that glass vase was one of the few items my grandparents had passed down to my mum through generations in my family,” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the apartment, I would have gladly said I did it. But you’re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless vase. Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the broken pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently that it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. But the glass was so delicate that some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home at any time. I had got a few butterflies in my stomach. Would her mom criticize or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn’t stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn’t stop recalling those fifteen seconds in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry.”
A couple of minutes later we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home. Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt. Let’s go!” her mom said, pointing at the open door.
