Do you know a special kind of forest in China? We call it “the mangrove (红树林) ” or “the red forest”. Are the mangroves red? No, mangroves don’t have red leaves. They are green.
Mangroves grow in the water on the coast. The place of mangrove planting in China is between 20°-30° N and 105°-120°E. Some parts of the trees are out of the water. They are home to reptiles like snakes. The other parts in the water make great homes for baby sea animals, like baby fish. Mangroves can grow as high as 10 meters. They keep the land away from strong winds and waves (海浪) . Like other trees, mangroves take in CO2 to make O2. They are helping to make air clean on earth.
Have you ever wondered how these trees survive in salty seawater? It is truly amazing! Mangroves have special roots that act like filters to keep most of the salt out. Some even have “breathing roots” that stick out of the mud to get fresh air. Also, mangroves have a unique way of having babies. Their seeds start growing into small trees while they are still on the mother tree! When they are big and heavy enough, they fall down and stick into the mud to start a new life. This clever way of living helps them grow strong even in hard places.
Even though mangroves are strong, they are also very fragile. Pollution and cutting down trees are hurting them. Now many mangroves are in danger. We must act now to save this “Green Great Wall.” We should not throw rubbish into the sea or on the beach. We can also tell our friends and family how important mangroves are. If we work together, we can keep the water clean and the forests green. Let’s be friends with nature and make sure these special forests will be here for many years to come.
34. Which picture shows the mangroves?
A. B.
C. D.
35. What does the underlined word “reptiles” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. trees B. homes C. animals D. waves
36. According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE about mangroves?
A. Their roots allow all the salt water to enter the trees to help them grow.
B. Their seeds fall into the water immediately after they are born.
C. Some of their roots stick out of the mud to help them get fresh air.
D. They cannot grow strong because the places they live are too hard.
37. Which of the following is a suggested way to help protect mangroves?
A. Planting more trees in the city parks far from the sea.
B. Telling friends and family how important mangroves are.
C. Building fences to keep baby sea animals inside the forest.
D. Cutting down the old trees to make room for new ones.

①Talking to yourself might seem strange if someone notices. But don’t feel bad about it. It’s actually very helpful to you.
②Talking out loud helps your brain work better. It can improve your performance in studying, doing sports, and solving problems. Researchers (研究者) studied 72 tennis players. They divided them into two groups. One group stayed silent (沉默) while playing, and the other talked to themselves. The group who talked to themselves felt more confident and performed better.
③If you’re feeling sad or angry, talking to yourself can help. Using your name, like saying, “Tom, you can deal with this,” allows you to think calmly (冷静地) and see things in a different way. For example, before an exam, you can say, “I’m ready for this!” This kind of self-talk makes you feel stronger. It’s like giving yourself a pep talk (鼓舞人心的演讲) to face challenges.
④Self-talk also helps improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else reading, and listening to a recording of oneself reading. They found that reading out loud helps you remember things best. Speaking the words makes the information (信息) stay in your brain longer.
⑤So, don’t feel shy. Talking to yourself is a great way to improve your mood, memory, and confidence. It’s like having a conversation with your best friend—yourself! Next time you need to study, play a sport, or solve a problem, try talking to yourself. You might be surprised by how much it helps. It’s not strange— it’s a smart way to make your brain more active!
38. What did researchers find about tennis players who talked to themselves?
A. They played worse than silent players. B. They felt more confident and performed better.
C. They became tired more quickly. D. They forgot their game strategies.
39. How can talking to yourself help when you’re unhappy?
A. It helps you think calmly and see things differently.
B. It makes you forget your problems quickly.
C. It makes other people give you more care and support.
D. It makes you speak in a louder and calmer voice.
40. What is the best way to remember information according to the passage?
A. Reading silently. B. Listening to someone else read.
C. Reading out loud. D. Listening to a recording of yourself.
41. What is the structure of the passage?
A. ①②→③④→⑤ B. ①→②③④→⑤
C. ①②③④→⑤ D. ①→②③④⑤
D
Ants are tiny but wise. Scientists have discovered that ants work together like a super-organism (超个体) to solve difficult problems.
Communicating with Chemicals. Ants can’t talk, but they use special smells to “speak”. When an ant finds food, it leaves a smell path. Other ants follow this path to find the food. Scientists call these smells pheromones (信息素) .
Jobs in the Colony (群体) . In an ant family, every ant has work. Young ants clean the nest and feed babies. Older ants go out to find food. If too many ants get hurt, the healthy ones quickly take over their jobs.
Saving the Group. Fire ants show incredible courage during floods. They link their legs and heads to form a floating boat, keeping the queen and babies safe in the centre. Some ants at the bottom of the boat are washed away, but their death saves the group. This behaviour inspires engineers to build robots that work together during disasters like earthquakes.
Learning from Ants. Scientists now copy ants’ ways to improve human life. For example, computer programs based on ant behaviour help trucks find the fastest delivery routes. In farms, people study how ants protect crops from pests naturally.
Who knew such small creatures could teach us so much about working together and being creative? The next time you see an ant, remember-it’s part of a powerful team that achieves big things!
42. How do ants help others search for food?
A. By making loud noises. B. By dancing in circles.
C. By leaving special smells. D. By touching each other.
43. Why does the writer mention “delivery routes” in paragraph 5?
A. To show ants’ influence on technology. B. To explain how trucks work.
C. To describe farming methods. D. To compare ants and humans.
44. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To warn about dangerous insects. B. To show ants’ amazing teamwork.
C. To teach how to keep pet ants. D. To list types of ants.
45. In which part of a newspaper can we read this passage?
A. News. B. Culture. C. Travel. D. Nature.

例文:
Dear Tom,
I hope this email finds you well. My name is Li Hua. Our school is planning a hiking trip to Baiyun Mountain for learning. It’s a famous green ecological park, known as the “lung of Guangzhou”. There are over a thousand kinds of plants and Birdsong Valley, the largest natural bird-watching area.
The trip aims to help us learn about plants and animals and protect them. It will start at 2 p.m. next Friday. We will observe different plants and birds, and attend a lecture on why protecting them is important. We can also enjoy the beautiful views together.
We would be very happy if you could join us. Looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
