On the first day of school, our professor challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a little old lady looking up at me with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed, “Of course! Why are you in college at such a young, innocent (幼稚的) age?” I asked.
She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children and then travel around.”
“No seriously,” I asked. I was curious why she took on this challenge at this age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education, and now I’m getting one,” she told me.
We became friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk for hours. Listening to this human “time machine” as she shared her years of wisdom and experience with me was so interesting.
Over the year, Rose became a campus icon (校园偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering. I’ll never forget what she taught us. “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only a few secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. There are many people walking around who are dead, and they don’t even know it,” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding the opportunity (机会) in change. Have no regrets (后悔). People usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.”
Rose taught us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

It took me a long time to learn where he came from. The little prince, who asked me so many questions, never seemed to hear the ones I asked him. However, everything was shown to me little by little from words dropped by accident.
The first time he saw my airplane, for example (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too difficult for me), he asked me, “What is that object?”
“That is not an object. It flies. It is an airplane. It is my airplane.” And I was proud to let him know that I could fly. He cried out, then, “What! You dropped down from the sky?”
“Yes,” I answered, modestly.
“Oh! That is funny!” And the little prince broke into a lovely peal (轰然大笑) of laughter, which made me very uncomfortable. I like my bad luck to be taken seriously.
Then he added, “So you, too, come from the sky! Which is your planet?”
I asked, “Do you come from another planet?” But he did not answer. He tossed (摇摆) his head gently, without taking his eyes from my plane, “It is true that on that you can’t have come from very far away.” And he sank into a reverie (沉思), which lasted a long time. Then, taking my sheep out of his pocket, he started thinking.
You can imagine how my curiosity was raised by this half-confidence about the “other planets”. I made a great effort, therefor, to find out more on this subject.
“My little man, where do you come from? What is this ‘where I live’ of which you speak? Where do you want to take your sheep?”
After a reflective silence he answered, “The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house.”
“That is so. And if you are good I will give you a string (绳子), too, so that you can tie him during the day, and a post to tie him to.”
But the little prince seemed shocked by this offer, “Tie him! What a strange idea!”
“But if you don’t tie him,” I said, “he will wander (闲逛) off somewhere, and get lost.”
My friend broke into another peal of laughter, “But where do you think he would go?”
“Anywhere. Straight ahead of him.”

If you have seen the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth (《地心历险记》), you may be impressed by the underground forest world. But such worlds exist in real life, too!
In May 2022, a team of Chinese scientists found a giant sinkhole (天坑) in Leye county, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. It is 306 meters long, 150 meters wide and 192 meters deep.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Leye county is called “the museum of sinkholes”, where people have found 30 sinkholes so far. These sinkholes are formed because of the unique karst landscape (喀斯特地貌). Karst is an area of land made up of limestone (石灰岩), which is a soft rock that dissolves (溶解)in water. When rainwater flows through little cracks (裂缝) in the bedrock, the cracks slowly grow into tunnels (隧道) and then big caves. Over time, a cave can get too big and its ceiling (顶) then falls slowly, opening up huge sinkholes. What’s amazing is the giant size of China’s sinkholes.
“In China, you have this incredibly, visually spectacular karst with enormous sinkholes. In other parts of the world, sinkholes might be quite subdued (压制的), only a meter or two in diameter (直径),” US researcher George Veni told Live Science.
According to Xinhua, in the newly found sinkhole, researchers found trees up to 40 meters high and undergrowth (林下植物) that came up to their shoulders.
Sinkholes don’t just look cool, they are gifts of life. Many of them are home to ancient plant, animal and microbe (微生物) life. They also provide a water source to 700 million people worldwide.
( ) 63. Why is Leye county called the “museum of sinkholes”?
A. Because the oldest sinkhole is in the county.
B. Because the sinkhole was found in the county
C. Because the biggest sinkhole is in the county.
D. Because there are many sinkholes in the county.
( ) 64. Compared to sinkholes in other countries, sinkholes in China are _____.
A. much bigger in size B. rich in plant species
C. are home to ancient species D. a water source for many people.
( ) 65. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The movie Journey to the Center of the Earth.
B. A newly found giant sinkhole in China.
C. The history of Chinese giant sinkholes.
D. Some facts about giant sinkholes.

The folk art form, kuai ban, which has a long history and starts in Tianjin, China, can be performed by a group or a single person. The performers tell stories in the local dialect (方言) and these stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have got more than 1 million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness (意识).
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told in kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. They consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm (魅力) of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the value of traditional Chinese culture, so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces, like Liu and Wan, are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.

One day, Zhang Luyang was working on her math homework. The girl who was 12 years old from Sichuan opened the Tik Tok, known as Douyin, to watch some short videos. She just wanted to take a short break, but half an hour later, she was still watching short videos.
Zhang is one of many teenagers who enjoy watching short videos on apps like Douyin. The videos typically last from 15 seconds to 5 minutes. According to a survey by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, 20 percent of teenagers watch short videos during whatever free time they have. About 10 percent check short video apps several times a day.
Sun Zhenyao, a boy from Anhui, says he likes short videos because they are interesting. “It’s the perfect thing to do when I want to kill small amounts of time,” he said.
Zhang says she learns a lot by watching short videos. She follows a Chinese vlogger (视频博主) living in the US on Douyin. The vlogger does funny things on Douyin, like selling pancakes on the street and inviting foreigners to watch The Wandering Earth. She said, “His videos show me cultural differences.”
However, Zhang and Sun also say they sometimes waste too much time watching short videos. As a result, apps like Douyin, Youku and Kuaishou have features that prevent users from watching videos for too long. Users can use “teen mode”, which sets 40 minutes a day for watching short videos. Sun says this has helped him cut down the amount of time spent watching videos.
