In late October 1997, Mike was attacked by a tiger shark near his home on the island of Kauai while surfing with his friends. The shark came right up under him and bit his lower leg. Mike hit the shark in the face, again and again, until the shark let him go. Swimming to the coast, Mike realized his lower right leg was gone. His friends quickly used a belt as a tourniquet (止血带) to help him, which doctors said saved his life.
A day later, Mike learned that his leg had to be cut off below the knee. Once Mike was given the OK by his doctors, he did what might seem impossible: He began riding the waves again, even near the place of the attack. He wondered why it happened.
He began to research sharks. While he never knew why he was attacked, Mike did learn something life changing. “Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around,” said Mike. “I learned that people have shark fin (鳍) soup and that 70 million sharks a year are killed for their fins alone.”
His situation allowed him to give sharks a voice. He began working with Hawaii’s government to help stop shark-made products. He worked with other shark attack survivors and went to Washington to ask lawmakers to create a bill to protect sharks. He even spoke at the United Nations about creating safe places for sharks to live.
39. How did Mike’s friends help save his life?
A. They hit the shark hard in the face. B. They used a belt to stop bleeding.
C. They called doctors from the island. D. They turned a surfboard into a tourniquet.
40. What surprising fact did Mike learn about sharks?
A. Humans protect sharks quite well. B. Sharks usually hunt people for food.
C. Sharks often attack surfers near beaches. D. Humans kill many sharks every year.
41. What did the underlined words “give sharks a voice” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Teach others about shark attacks. B. Speak up to protect sharks.
C. Comfort shark attack survivors. D. Record sounds made by sharks.
【答案】39. B 40. D 41. B

I am Yu Peixin. When I was 11 or 12 years old, I read Educated: A Memoir by the American writer Tara Westover for the first time. However, I soon became bored. The book tells the story of Westover’s life; she longed for knowledge but was kept out of school by her father. With strong determination (决心), she taught herself and continued to study on her own.
At that time, I found the book uninteresting not because her story lacked (缺乏) meaning, but because it was difficult for a young girl to fully understand it. In the end, I stopped reading about halfway through.
This year, the book became a required reading in my class. Now that I am 15, reading it again was a completely different experience. This time, I could clearly see the courage behind Westover’s pursuit (追求) of education and the price she paid for her independence. Breaking free from her family’s beliefs was not easy, but she managed to do it and even went on to attend college.
I realized that my own education over the years has changed the way I read and understand books. Reading Educated didn’t just teach me about Westover’s journey—it also helped me think about my own. I learned that education is not only a kind of power, but also something that opens up the mind and deepens the heart.
42. Why did Yu Peixin stop reading the book at first?
A. Because the writer’s story lacked meaning. B. Because the book was too long for her.
C. Because she wanted to study on her own. D. Because she was too young to understand it.
43. What happened when Yu read the book again?
A. She got a completely different opinion about travelling.
B. She broke free from her family’s beliefs successfully.
C. She better understood Westover’s courage and choices.
D. She managed to attend college with Westover’s help.
44. What lesson did Yu learn from reading the book?
A. Family support is the key to a good education.
B. Education shapes minds and deepens feelings.
C. Courage always leads people to quick success.
D. Reading many books improves writing skills.
【答案】42. D 43. C 44. B

Hobbies not only make us happy, but also keep our brains healthy. A Canadian study found that long-term hobbies can improve the brain’s structure (结构).
The research studied 58 people who love bird-watching. Half were experts, while the other half were beginners. Both groups included people of different ages, from the 20s to the 70s, and were similar in education.
During brain scans (扫描), volunteers saw a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then, they had to pick the bird from four different pictures. This test was done 72 times, with 18 different kinds of birds.
The expert group successfully picked out 83 percent of local birds and 61 percent of non-local ones, while the beginners only got 44 percent right for both. The scans also showed differences in brain structure: the areas responsible for attention and working memory are more compact (紧凑的) in the experts, no matter the age. These areas also “lit up” when the experts tried to pick non-local birds—something that did not happen in the beginners’ brains.
Creative hobbies, like music and dancing, are also good for the brain. A 2025 study found that the brains of dancers appeared over seven years younger than their actual age. AI models also showed that even short-term creative learning, like 30 hours, can “turn back time” for the brain. “Creativity shapes not only culture but biology,” the scientists wrote on The Conversation.
49. What is introduced about the research in Paragraph 2?
A. Volunteers that took part in the research. B. Reasons to do the research.
C. Methods used during the study. D. Bird pictures chosen by experts.
50. What did the volunteers do during the brain scan test?
A. Watch bird videos for seconds. B. Draw pictures of local birds.
C. Identify a bird from four pictures. D. Describe eighteen kinds of birds.
51. What was found in experts’ brain structures?
A. More compact areas for attention and memory.
B. Smaller parts that control creative learning.
C. Weaker activity during bird recognition tasks.
D. Similar brain areas compared with beginners.
52. What can we infer from the scientists’ words in the last paragraph?
A. Creativity is the most important part in culture.
B. Age is not a problem in activities of creativity.
C. AI models perform better in creative learning.
D. Creative hobbies bring benefits to human brains.
【答案】49. A 50. C 51. A 52. D
【解析】

根据第三段“During brain scans, volunteers saw a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then, they had to pick the bird from four different pictures.” 可知,志愿者需要从四张图片中识别出目标鸟类。
【51题详解】
根据第四段“The scans also showed differences in brain structure: the areas responsible for attention and working memory are more compact in the experts, no matter the age.” 可知,专家的大脑中,负责注意力和工作记忆的区域更紧凑。
【52题详解】

Blake loved science. During Super Science Week, he hoped his experiment would be accepted so he could enter the science fair.
“I will suspend (使悬浮) an egg in water,” Blake told his class. He poured salt into a glass of water and dropped in an egg, but it went straight to the bottom.
“Blake’s blushing (脸红)!” Kate shouted. Blake returned to his seat, covering his face.
The next day he tried a new experiment in class, but things quickly went wrong. Bubbles (泡泡) went everywhere and got all over Mrs Watson’s grade book.
“Blake’s blushing again!” Perry laughed.
Still not giving up, Blake tried another experiment the next day. But as he began to explain it, pepper suddenly flew across the desk. That night he realized something: the only thing he could always do was blush.
The next morning he stood in front of the class wearing mouse ears. Everyone laughed as his face turned red.
“That’s right. I’m blushing. This is my science experiment,” Blake said.
“Mouse ears are your science experiment?” Perry asked.
“No. Blushing is!” Blake explained, showing a poster for his experiment, “Charles Darwin called blushing ‘the most human of all expressions’. When people feel shy or uncomfortable, more blood goes to their face, so it turns red.”
Mrs Watson smiled and said, “Blake, this will be perfect for the science fair.”
Blake walked proudly to his seat. His face was red—but this time he didn’t mind. Science was still his thing.
53. What happened after Blake dropped an egg into a glass of water? (不超过10个词)

【答案】One possible version:
Dear teacher and classmates,
It’s my great honour to share something about the photo in class.
The dish in the photo is dumplings made by my grandma. Every Lunar New Year’s Eve, our whole family got together to make dumplings. I remember sitting beside Grandma, learning to fold the dough into little “ears”. She always hid a coin in one dumpling, and whoever found it would have good luck for the whole year.
To me, this dish is not just about taste—it’s a symbol of family reunion and love. Even when I’m far from home, the smell of freshly cooked dumplings brings back those warm moments. That’s why this photo is so special.

Do you ever think about visiting beautiful villages but don’t have the time? Thanks to modern technology, you can now visit them without even leaving your home.
The Traditional Chinese Village Digital Museum is a free online museum. People began building this museum in 2017. It has become the world’s largest rural heritage database (乡村遗产数据库). It offers interesting ways to see 6,819 villages across China.
With just your phone or computer, you can learn about the beauty and history of thousands of traditional Chinese villages. You can take 360-degree virtual (虚拟的) tours and feel like you’re really walking through the streets. You can look inside traditional houses and imagine the daily lives of people in the past. There are also 3D models of villages, short films and lots of photos showing their history. If you like stories, you can listen to real villagers share their memories of these special places.
The online museum also has exhibitions about special buildings, like the tulou, a traditional building in Fujian. If you want to help protect old buildings, you can even “adopt (认领)” them on the website.
