Multi-day cycling journeys represent a unique combination of physical challenge, absorbed travel, and intense environmental engagement. This mode of travel, cycling, allows for a close exploration of diverse landscapes. It is defined by its independence and a pace that is ideal for deep cultural and geographical appreciation. The following typical routes illustrate the varied appeal of such undertakings, each presenting a distinct set of physical demands and cultural rewards.
DANUBE CYCLE PATH
Crossing the river from its German source to its mouth in Romania constitutes an awe-inspiring 1,800-mile journey. However, its picturesque Austrian section offers a highly scenic alternative. Starting just across the German border in Passau, cyclists can conclude their journey in Slovakia, with Bratislava readily accessible from Vienna by train.
C2C(Sea-to-Sea) ROUTE
Modeled on the trans-England principle of Hadrian’s Wall, this route negotiates the rough landform of the Lake District and North Pennines. Participants often observe the tradition of engaging their back wheel in the Irish Sea at the outset, and their front wheel in the North Sea upon reaching the edge of Newcastle.
CANAL DU MIDI
This global cultural treasure in France was designed with boats not bikes in mind, but its tree-lined canal paths make for a very civilized cycle. Exodus Travels’ tour also takes in the historic walled town of Carcassonne from the Middle Ages and a chance to wash off the dust of the road on a pretty beach.
CROSS CAPE
This leg-testing journey crosses the southern tip of the African continent. Departing from Plettenberg Bay, the route progresses through the unique fynbos ecosystem, passes historic towns, and eventually reaches Stellenbosch, the heart of the Cape Winelands.

There’s something timelessly immersive about audio storytelling — and Naomi Shah knows it. At 24, she established Meet Cute, an entertainment company specializing in short-form audio romantic comedies. It has produced some 250 titles and reached 8.6 million downloads across streaming services.
From day one, Meet Cute’s mission was “to build stories at the speed of culture,” Shah says. “If something is trending on socials, we’re able to incorporate it into a story.” Moving quickly and meeting audiences “where they’re at,” Shah says, enables Meet Cute to be “part of the conversation.”
Growing up in Portland, Ore., Shah loved creative writing but was identified as a “STEMkid.” She majored in mechanical engineering. Wanting something more creative and founder-facing, she joined the investment team at Union Square Ventures. Her employer wanted better odds, but the team couldn’t find an entrepreneur (创业者) with a convincing proposal. So Shah wrote one herself, drawing up the blueprints for such a company. Later, Union Square contributed the first of $9.3 million in backing.
While Shah is a rom-com fan, she envisions Meet Cute’s appeal lying not in specific genre (体裁) conventions, but in general feel-good, nonprescriptive escapism.“Rom-coms stand for hope, human connection and love,” says Shah. But why this approach — brief, audible, and upbeat? According to Shah, Meet Cute “brings entertainment into day-to-day tasks and pockets of time” when you can’t dedicate hours to a screen. Plus, without concrete visuals, listeners’ imaginations run wild. “Every single person is in the director’s seat,” she says.
Earlier this year, the company was acquired by Fox Entertainment, where Shah now serves as senior vice president of strategy and operations. Meet Cute can now tap the wealth of Fox-owned stories and convert them to audio, and it has multiple global platforms on which to distribute its stories.
“It’s not over,” Shah says. “That is something that I’m very proud of: I’ve built something that’s going to keep going.”
4. What kind of content does Meet Cute seek to produce?
A. Long and weighty. B. Classic and formal.
C. Accurate and select. D. Timely and relatable.
5. Which of the following best describes Shah’s career path?
A. A preset track. B. A tough climb.
C. A cross-field leap. D. A comfort-zone choice.
6. What does Shah highlight as a desirable feature of Meet Cute?
A. It fits into small time windows.
B. It sticks to rom-com conventions.
C. It supports independent directors.
D. It provides step-by-step instructions.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Rise of Audio Storytelling
B. Mixing Business with Pleasure
C. A STEM Kid’s Literary Journey
D. Why We Love Romantic Comedies

The virtue of intellectual humility (谦逊) is getting much attention. While researchers define it differently, the core of the idea is “recognizing that one’s beliefs and opinions might be incorrect.” But achieving intellectual humility is hard. Overconfidence is a long-lasting problem, faced by many, and does not appear to be improved by education or expertise. Even scientific pioneers can sometimes lack this valuable quality.
A. A. Michelson, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in science, expressed a striking view about the fundamental laws of physics, “It seems probable that most of the grand basic principles have now been firmly established.” Over the next few decades, fundamental physical theory witnessed its most dramatic changes.
Scientists can be mistaken about the accuracy of their own positions. Even so, there is reason to believe such mistakes will go public. But sometimes it takes a long time. Is there a way to encourage the pursuit of new, possibly unpopular scientific ideas, while acknowledging the great value and power of the scientific enterprise as it now stands?
Here is where intellectual humility can play a positive role in science. Intellectual humility is not skepticism. It does not imply doubt. An intellectually humble person may have strong commitments to various beliefs and may pursue those commitments with enthusiasm. Their intellectual humility lies in their openness to the possibility that nobody is in possession of the full truth, and that others, too, may have insights, ideas and evidence that should be taken into account when forming their own best judgments.
This openness to inquiry does not, of course, imply that scientists are bound to accept theories they take to be wrong. What we ought to accept is that we too might be wrong, that something good might come of the pursuit of those other ideas and theories, and that tolerating rather than accusing those who pursue such things just might be the best way forward for science and for society.
8. What is the core idea of intellectual humility?
A. Questioning everything. B. Avoiding firm beliefs.
C. Agreeing with all others. D. Accepting one’s possible errors.
9. Which of the following words is closest to the underlined word “expertise” in paragraph 1?
A. experience. B. speciality. C. authority. D. qualification.
10. What does the example of Michelson suggest about scientists?
A. They keep trying different ideas. B. They misjudge their own knowledge.
C. They often question the existing ideas. D. They dislike predicting what will happen.
11. What makes intellectual humility positive in science?
A. It rejects unpopular research. B. It tends to avoid firm commitments.
C. It leads to openness to others’ insights. D. It encourages doubts about all old ideas.
D
In a November 1984 story for Technology Review, Carolyn Sumners, head of astronomy at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, described how toys, games, and even amusement park rides could change how young minds view science and math. Sumners noted, a yo-yo can be used to observe the forces on a roller coaster. Even a simple ball offers insights into the laws of gravity.
While Sumners concentrated on physics, she was onto something bigger. Over the last several decades, evidence has emerged that childhood play can shape our future selves: the skills we develop, the professions we choose, our sense of self-worth, and even our relationships.
According to Jacqueline Harding, a child development expert and author of The Brain That Loves to Play, “If you invest time in play, which helps with organizational skills, decision-making, toughness — all those things — then it’s going to guide you into a much more safe, secure space in the future.”
Sumners concentrated mostly on hard skills, the scientific knowledge that toys and games can help develop. But there are soft skills, too, like creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and empathy.
“The kinds of playthings, or play activities, that really produce creative thought,” she says, “are natural materials, with no defined end to them — like clay, paint, water, and mud — so that there is no right or wrong way of playing with it.”
Playing is by definition voluntary, and goal-free; it involves taking risks, testing boundaries, and experimenting. The best kind of play results in joyful discovery, and along the way, the building blocks of innovation and personal development take shape. But in the decades since Sumners wrote her story, the landscape of play has shifted considerably. Recent research suggests that digital games and virtual play don’t appear to facilitate the same developmental benefits as physical games and outdoor play.
“The brain loves the rewards that are coming from digital media,” says Harding. But in screen-based play, “you’re not getting that independence.” The lack of physical interaction also concerns her: “It is the quality of human face-to-face interaction, eye-to-eye look, and mutual engagement in a play activity that really makes a difference.”
12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. The educational value of a yo-yo is limited to physics.
B. Play’s influence on career choice was known in the 1980s.
C. Sumners accurately predicted the broad impact of play.
D. Sumners’ primary interest was in children’s mental health.
13. What function does paragraph 3 serve?
A. To back up a statement. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To offer an explanation. D. To make a prediction
14. What is Sumners’ attitude towards digital games?
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Unclear.
15. What does Harding emphasize as a key to play?
A. Joyful discovery. B. Physical interaction.
C. Personal development. D. Screen-based independence.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
No More Chicken Wings, Please!
Could I eat another bite? I scanned the passenger seat of my car, piled with takeaway chicken wings. Being overfull was a familiar feeling as a food critic, but maybe I’d simply reached the end of the road.
Six years earlier, I’d been thrilled to land this job. Driving hundreds of miles weekly, I sometimes ate out 4-5 times a day as I pursued stories, unearthing under-the-radar places, dishes and people. ____16____. “Wait! You get paid to eat? What a hard life! You have my dream job,” they’d say.
Outwardly, it was a dream, and complaining seemed ungracious. So, I rarely told anyone that the work was not all peaches and cream. I rushed from plate to plate, deadline to deadline, postponing medical appointments. ____17____. “I’d like to see that number a little lower,” said my doctor as she studied my soaring cholesterol. “I know, but I can’t control what I eat,” I told her.
Some food writers had mastered the art of taking one bite of everything, but I’d finish dishes I loved. I watched my weight tick upward, and workouts had minimal effect. The occasional case of food poisoning was a job hazard, yet long-term over consumption took the real toll. One day, my doctor squinted at the screen. “Well,” she warned. “it looks like you’re pre-diabetic.” ____18____. I processed this news while tucking into fish tacos down the street. I couldn’t just not eat the tacos, could I? I hung on for another year but started daydreaming about home cooking. ____19____.
“My time at the paper has come to an end,” I told my boss from my car. “Are you sure?” she leaned forward. Yes, I was. ____20____. It took months to retrain my colossal appetite, but I hoped those months would earn me extra years. Nine months on — though missing a regular paycheck - I’ve reversed weight gain, and my blood sugar is fine. The biggest surprise? Stress reduction reversed aging. “You look so different,” friends say. “You just look...relaxed.”
A. OK, so my blood sugar level was now a cause of concern as well.
B. I felt as if an enormous weight had instantly dropped off my mind.
C. It was six orders of wings in a single afternoon that finally did me in.
D. The constant deadlines left me with no time for hobbies or personal life.
E. Whenever someone asked what I did for a living, their eyes lit up at the response.
F. On the odd occasion I made it to the doctor, my blood levels told an alarming story.
G. People often asked me if I could recommend a good restaurant for their special occasions.

It had been a challenging but rewarding term, filled with hard work and a thirst for knowledge. As I handed in my final assignment and saw it was graded A, a sense of pride and satisfaction washed over me. Little did I know that my accomplishments had not gone unnoticed by my families, who had been closely observing my progress.
At the first day of summer vacation, my mother told me excitedly that we would pay a visit to Marco the next day to cheer for my progress in academic study. When I got the good news, I felt on top of the world and could not hold back my high spirits. As I lay in bed that night, a mix of anticipation and delight welled up in my heart, and I slid into a dream-filled sleep, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the coming adventure.
After we arrived in Marco, my parents said that we would first visit the Marco tower. Marco Tower, built in the late 19th century, is a historic landmark that showcases the rich architectural heritage of the city. It is also considered one of the top tourist attractions in the region. Upon hearing the inspiring news, I bounced up and down with joy. But then I felt a bit uneasy because of my fear of heights.
Inside the lift, my palms grew sweaty as the anxiety consumed me. I paced back and forth in the tower lift, unsure of whether I would have the courage. After the lift reached the specific floor, I gasped (倒吸一口气) in horror. The floor here was made of glass, so one could appreciate the height of the tower and take a real adventure. Seeing my family both take out their phones to shoot the grand views, I felt under pressure. Then my mother smiled at me and said delightedly, “Just take it easy and you can do it.”

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. B 11. C

【导语】文章围绕理智谦逊展开,阐释了它的核心内涵、人们普遍过度自信的现状,借科学家事例说明人易认知出错,并论述了理智谦逊在科学研究中的积极意义与价值。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The virtue of intellectual humility (谦逊) is getting much attention. While researchers define it differently, the core of the idea is “recognizing that one’s beliefs and opinions might be incorrect.”(理智谦逊的美德正受到越来越多的关注。尽管研究人员对其定义不同,但这一想法的核心是‘认识到自己的信仰和观点可能是错误的’)”可知,理智谦逊的核心思想是认识到自己的信仰和观点可能是错误的,即接受自己可能存在的错误。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段中“Overconfidence is a long-lasting problem, faced by many, and does not appear to be improved by education or expertise.(过度自信是长期普遍存在的问题,许多人都会遇到,而且似乎不会因教育或expertise而改善)”可知,education(教育)和划线词expertise为并列同类名词,结合后文“Even scientific pioneers can sometimes lack this valuable quality.(即使是科学先驱有时也会缺乏这种宝贵的品质。)”可知,即使是具有专业知识的科学先驱也会过度自信,speciality指代后天习得的学识、专业本领。B选项speciality意为“专业;专长”,与语境高度贴合。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“A. A. Michelson, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in science, expressed a striking view about the fundamental laws of physics, “It seems probable that most of the grand basic principles have now been firmly established.” Over the next few decades, fundamental physical theory witnessed its most dramatic changes.(第一个获得诺贝尔科学奖的美国人A. A. 密歇尔森对物理学基本定律发表了惊人的观点,‘大多数重要的基本原理似乎都已经牢固确立了。’在接下来的几十年里,基础物理理论经历了最剧烈的变化)”可知,密歇尔森认为重要的基本原理已经牢固确立,但之后基础物理理论却发生了巨大的变化,这说明科学家可能会误判自己的知识。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Their intellectual humility lies in their openness to the possibility that nobody is in possession of the full truth, and that others, too, may have insights, ideas and evidence that should be taken into account when forming their own best judgments.(他们的理智谦逊在于,他们愿意接受这样一种可能性:没有人掌握全部真理,其他人在形成自己最佳判断时,也可能有应该考虑到的见解、想法和证据)”可知,理智谦逊使科学家对别人的见解持开放态度,这是理智谦逊在科学领域的积极作用。

As I weighed the options in my mind, my mother’s words echoed in m y ears, reminding me of the courage and confidence I used to have. With a deep breath, I made up my mind that I would seize this opportunity and embrace the adventure that awaited me in Marco.
I was totally struck by the height of the tower. My eyes were immediately drawn to the magnificent structure that stood tall in the city center-Marco Tower. Its charm was without equal, its soaring height dominating the skyline. I couldn’t help feeling a mixture of awe and admiration. I reminded myself of the encouragement from my loved ones.
