Teaching goals: At the end of the class, students will 1. Learn new vocabulary and expressions related to subjects and preference through reading. 2. Try to retell the contents of the articles and express their own opinions. 3. Improve their ability to quickly catch key information, infer the author’s intention and summarize the main points of the articles. 4. Express their preference and the reasons about their favourite subject. 5. Learn about the different subjects in different countries and enhance their cultural awareness. Key and difficult points: 1. Students are able to say what they can learn from different subjects. 2. Students are able to express their favourite subjects with enough reasons. 3. Students are able to be aware that every subject is important. Teaching method: Reading teaching based on “top-down” model. Teaching aids: multi-media equipment, a blackboard. Teaching procedure: Step 1 Lead-in Display some pictures and let students guess the different subjects. Then use class timetable to ask students the subjects they have. -What subjects do you have today? -What other subjects do you have at school? -What do you think of these subjects? -What’s your favourite subject? Why? (Justification: Activate students’ background knowledge about the subjects, stimulate their reading interest, and lay the foundation for reading.) Step 2 Pre-reading 1. Prediction Show the title and pictures of the reading material and let Ss have predictions. -What does the passage mainly talk about? (Their favourite subjects.) -What information can you know from these pictures? (Mike likes .../ Wu Binbin likes ...) -What do you want to know? (What subject? Why do they like it? When do they have it? Who is the teacher?) (Justification: Guide students to make reasonable predictions about the main idea and content of the article, and set clear purposes and exploration motivations for reading by using textual features (title, characters). Step 3 While-reading 1. Skimming ① Read quickly the whole passage to summarize the main idea. ② Check the previous predictions and find out the answer of “What are their favourite subjects?” 2. Scanning 1 Read carefully and answer the following questions in 1d. 2 Complete the chart in 1c.
