I’m somewhere with a lot of sheep on my right. That’s all I can tell you.
OK. You’re at Nelson Farm. To avoid all the shops in town, keep driving straight until you come to Pine Circle. Don’t take Park Street.

In the children’s story “Frog and Toad”, two friends make a big packet of cookies. The cookies are so delicious that they cannot stop eating them. Frog and Toad try to use willpower, but only to eat more, again and again.
Here is the fact: Willpower isn’t as powerful as we think. Successful people do not rely on willpower to control their desires. ____45____, many of them use “situational agency”. This means they design their environment so that they do not need to use willpower in the first place. For example, Zadie Smith has chosen to stay off social media. She doesn’t own a smartphone in her life. For her, this is the easiest way to ____46____ social media use. Jennifer Lopez keeps herself healthy by carrying water, fresh fruit, and vegetables with her wherever she goes.
Situational agency is not just for famous people—it ____47____ for everyone. If you hate exercising, walking outdoors instead of running in the gym can help you keep doing it. That’s because being outdoors is more fun. ____48____, exercising with a friend or listening to a favourite song also makes the experience more enjoyable. When you find fun in something, you are more likely to do it again.
Another way is to create ____49____ between yourself and temptations (诱惑). In one study, students who left their phones in another room while studying earned higher grades. In another study, adults who stored unhealthy food at the top of shelves ate more healthily days later.
Schools also have the power to make the situation better. When students are asked not to bring their phones to schools, teachers report that students make more eye contact and talk to one another more often. The lunchroom becomes ____50____—exactly as it should be.
Situational agency helps you deal with a world full of temptations. You cannot change the world, but you can decide what comes into your personal space.
At the end of the “Frog and Toad” story, the two friends take the cookies outside and give them to the birds. Problem solved.

D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)(12分)
JUNE 23
I just got home from my weekly dinner with Dad. He had got a plan—we’re going on a six-day trip, camping and white-water rafting, just two of us. I’m not sure how I feel. Since my parents divorced (离婚) last year, the longest time Dad and I have spent together was a two-day weekend.
JULY 14
Dad picked me up this morning. At first, neither of us talked. I didn’t know what to say, so I just pretended to enjoy the view. Then Dad broke the silence and we started chatting. We chatted all the way. I didn’t even notice we had arrived at the campsite.
JULY 16
Yesterday was my first time getting into a raft. Our guide showed us how to paddle (用桨划船), but at first Dad and I couldn’t work together well. But soon we got it, and the raft started moving smoothly. Then we hit the rapids (急流). The guide shouted a warning, and suddenly waves were everywhere. The raft went up and down like a roller coaster. We got completely wet within seconds. It was so exciting and scary that I ________ at the same time. Behind me, I heard Dad yell, “You okay?” Then again, “You having fun?” He kept asking, over and over. It was a little annoying, but made me feel warm inside.
JULY 18
Wow, today was kind of scary! Our raft moved into a part of the river with huge rocks. The water pulled us one way, and then pulled us in the opposite direction. I got really frightened. I looked at Dad—he looked worried or scared, too. He leaned over, held my hand, and said, “We can do this. Together.” So we did. We shouted to each other—“Come on! Almost there!” “You’re doing great!”—as we found our way to calmer waters. We sat in the raft, breathing hard, and then we both started laughing.
JULY 19
I can’t believe the trip was over. Dad just drove me to Mom’s, and we waved goodbye. Something between us feels different now. But something else—something deeper—has never changed.

45. A. Therefore B. However C. Instead D. Besides

48. A. Actually B. Luckily C. Similarly D. Surprisingly

C. Fill in the blanks with proper words(在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给)(14分)
Right after I finished acting school, I got a short-term job with a traveling theater company. The pay was very low and the company only gave us one meal a day. For the rest, we had to f____51____ ourselves. We bought cheap food from convenience stores and prepared it in our hotel rooms.
Our first performance place was a large resort (度假村). The staff treated us badly from the very beginning. At dinner, they even r____52____ to provide us with forks or knives while our only one hot meal of the day turned cold on the table. It was a difficult time.
When we arrived at our second place, the Valencia Ballroom in York, our first t____53____ was to practice the show again for the new stage. While we were practicing, I saw someone setting a table. I began to w____54____. It was the middle of the day, which meant they were preparing lunch for us. But if we had lunch, we would not get a hot dinner. We were really expecting that hot meal.
It was time to eat. The table was beautifully set. The sandwiches were big. There were also lots of potato chips and cold drinks. It all looked so nice. After the meal, I pulled the headwaiter to the c____55____ of the room and told him quietly that we would prefer to have our one meal be dinner.
He told me dinner would be at six o’clock. Then he added that the “one meal a day” rule in our contract (合同) was u____56____. He promised to offer us both lunch and dinner every day for the whole time we performed there.
We returned at six for dinner, feeling t____57____ for the headwaiter’s kindness, but also a little unsure because it still seemed too good to be true. Again, we saw our table beautifully set. Our waiter was cheerful and sang to us. He filled our water glasses, took our coffee orders, and even brought us dessert. At the end, we tried to take our plates to the kitchen. The headwaiter stopped us and explained, “This is enjoyable for us only if you let us do it right.”
Since then, I have tried to live like them: enjoy your work by doing it well, treat people who have nothing to give you as kindly as you would treat a paying customer.
