I moved to Germany three months ago. I came here to work in a primary school. Before I arrived, I thought I knew a lot about Western culture, but life here still surprised me.
First of all, the eating time is very different. People in Germany usually have lunch at 12:00 and dinner at 18:00. In my country, we often have dinner after 20:00. Also, Germans don’t eat too much for dinner.
Then, the greeting ways surprised me. People shake hands every time they meet, even if they see each other every day. In my country, we just wave or nod.
Finally, table manners are strict. You can’t make any noise while eating. And you can’t put your elbows on the table. I didn’t know these rules at first, and I felt embarrassed.
This experience teaches me that culture is different everywhere. We should learn about local customs before we go to a new place.
