In an old library, there was a storybook. His cover looked great, but every page inside was blank. Children would open him with excitement, find nothing, and throw him back. “I wish the kids would like me.” he said. On the same shelf, there was a bottle full of ink. He had been forgotten in the corner. He always dreamed of creating a real book.
One day the book was thrown back again. He began to complain about his bad luck and loneliness. The ink bottle joined him. Just then, a white feather floated down. “I think I’m so useless,” she said with sadness. The three cried together.

Have you ever seen a painting long enough to cover your whole wall? A thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains is one of China's greatest art treasures. It was painted about 900 years ago during the Northern Song Dynasty by Wang Ximeng.
Painted on a whole piece of silk, the painting measures over 11 metres from end to end. It shows a beautiful scene of mountains and rivers in China. It also includes quiet images of fishing villages, markets, simple houses, watermills, and bridges. These peaceful scenes come to life with people fishing, rowing boats, and walking.
What makes this painting special is its bright beautiful colours. Wang Ximeng used blues and greens made from minerals. Even after 900 years, the colours are still clear and bright. The mountains look like green jade, and the rivers shine like silks.
The story behind the painting is amazing. Wang Ximeng was only about 18 years old when he painted it. He was a student in the emperor's art school. The emperor, Huizong, loved art and was even his teacher. To show his thanks to Huizong, the young painter worked hard for months to finish this masterpiece. Sadly, Wang died very young. This is the only surviving work by him.
For centuries, the painting survived wars and passed through the hands of different collectors. People always protected it because they knew it was priceless. Today, it is carefully kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Because light can damage its bright colours, it is seldom shown to the public.

Dear Mr Brown,
I am Li Hua from Grade Eight.
Our class is planning to hold a special charity sale themed “Inheriting Intangible Cultural Heritage and Supporting Public Welfare” to raise money for children in poor areas and promote Chinese traditional paper-cutting. The activity will take place on the school playground this Friday afternoon.
We have made detailed arrangements. First, we will invite professional paper-cutting artists to give on-site guidance and teach students basic cutting skills. Second, we will sell exquisite handmade paper-cutting works made by ourselves. Besides, we will hold a paper-cutting exhibition to show different styles of works and spread traditional culture.
This activity is of great significance. Not only can it help students develop practical skills and a sense of responsibility, but it also passes on traditional culture and sends warmth to children in need. We would highly appreciate it if you could approve this activity.
We look forward to your reply!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
