Widely considered as one of China’s most ancient games, Go (围棋) has been practiced for over 4,000 years. During the Jin Dynasty, a Buddhist (佛教) master named Zhi Daolin, loved to play Go, finding it full of life’s deep wisdom. He thought people could “talk” by placing pieces on the board, so he gave Go another name—“hand conversations”.
Many Go players feel that the game is like real life. Sometimes, a player can move forward quickly; other times, they must slow down and wait. Sometimes, they can directly face the challenger; other times, they must take a different path. Every Go piece is placed carefully, just like how people solve problem in life. A single mistake in Go may change the whole game, just as one bad decision in life can lead to unexpected results. That is why experienced players always think deeply before making a move.
The purpose of Go is not just to win but also to gain wisdom. Players do not simply try to defeat (打败) each other. Instead, they work together to create a meaningful game. Go teaches patience, strategies and problem-solving skills to help people know what to do when meeting difficulties. It also helps people develop a calm mind, which is useful in daily life. Some even believe that Go can improve a person’s ability to make decisions in the real world.
Go is more than just a game—it is a way to understand life. That is why it has lasted for thousands of years. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, Go always has something to teach.
28. Why is Go also called “hand conversations”?

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

Clara stared at the empty notebook on her desk, her fingers trembling. It was the third time she had torn out a page, crumpled it, and thrown it into the overflowing waste basket. Why is this so hard? She thought, glancing at the calendar circled in red: May 10th—Mother’s Day.
Her relationship with Mom had always been... complicated. Mom was a doctor who worked late shifts, often leaving before dawn and returning when Clara was already asleep. Their conversations were limited to brief notes on the fridge: “Dinner in the microwave” or “Math test tomorrow—study!” Clara had grown used to the silence, but this year, she wanted to break it.
The notebook was meant to be a gift—a collection of memories they had never shared. On the first page, she wrote: “To Mom, who saves lives but forgot mine.” Instantly guilt (内疚) washed over her. She ripped it out.
That night, Clara found an old photo album in the attic. Flipping through it, she paused at a picture of Mom holding her as a baby, smiling in a way Clara had never seen. Behind the photo was a folded letter in Mom’s handwriting: “Clara turned I today. I missed her first steps because of an emergency surgery. How do I tell her I love her more than anything?”
Tears blurred the words. Underneath the album lay a small box labeled “Clara’s Art–Age 5 to 12”. Inside were every doodle and painting Clara had thrown away over the years, carefully preserved.
On Mother’s Day morning, Clara placed the notebook on Mom’s pillow. This time, the first page read: “To Mom, who loved me even when I didn’t see it.”
28. Why did Clara feel guilty after writing “To Mom, who saves lives but forgot mine”?

①Have you ever had a home visit from your teachers? In the past, home visits were an important way for teachers and parents to communicate. However, this tradition is becoming less popular now. Instead, new forms of home visits are becoming more common.
②A recent survey in Zhejiang Province asked 6,200 parents about home visits. Surprisingly, 85.5% of them said they disliked traditional home visits. Why? Many parents worry about privacy, and others feel it takes too much time to prepare. For teachers, they have great difficulty as well because they already manage heavy work pressure. Visiting every student’s home adds stress to their energy and time.
③While traditional home visits are fading, schools are finding creative ways to connect with families and keep communication strong. For example, Wang Hongjun, a school headmaster, believes home visits help build trust between families and schools. However, he thinks traditional visits need to be changed. Wang changed how the school communicates with families by holding parent-teacher meetings twice every term. Instead of long discussions, teachers provide a 30-minute summary (总结), followed by one-on-one meetings with subject teachers that last 15 to 20 minutes per parent. This saves time and helps make communication clearer and more purposeful.
④Schools are also creating “parent classrooms.” These are special groups where parents can join activities like book clubs or skill-building workshops. These activities help parents learn new things, which is also good their children’s growth. This idea not only improves the relationship between schools and families but also adds warmth and meaning to education.
⑤Some schools are testing even more flexible (灵活的) methods. In Shanghai, parents can choose between home visits or online meetings. A few schools even organize meetings in teahouses to make parents feel relaxed. “These new methods result in full communication and understanding between home and school,” a parent said.
28. Why do most surveyed parents in Zhejiang dislike traditional home visits?
A. Because they find it hard to talk with every subject teacher at home.
B. Because they are already under too much work and health pressure.
C. Because they either value their privacy or find the preparation tiring.
D. Because they think such communication is a waste of time and energy.
29. What is the new method used by Wang Hongjun’s school every term?
A. Starting online classes for parents. B. Holding twice-a-term parent meetings.
C. Paying home visits every week. D. Providing tearoom meetings with students.
30. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Modern schools with online teaching.
B. The development of traditional education.
C. New ways of teacher-parent communication.
D. The relationships between teachers and parents.

What would life be like if you give up using your cell phone? Will it become boring?
Twenty-eight eighth-graders at St. Matthew School in San Francisco will tell you it can still be rich and colorful.
These students took part in their school’s “tech-free” challenge. They couldn’t use cell phones for two weeks from Nov 11 to Nov 22.
The idea was to help students understand how technology has affected their lives, said Denise Uhl, principal of the school.
Uhl did a survey on technology usage among the eighth-graders before thinking of the challenge. She found that 84 percent of the students said they didn’t like it “when everyone was on their cell phones”, but they didn’t know what to do about it. The answer was actually easy—to stop constantly using cell phones.
To help students understand the point, Uhl created the activity. It was warmly welcomed among students.
“I wanted to sign up for the tech-free challenge because it was just really a good idea to do it,” eighth-grader Joe told local newspaper Catholic San Francisco. “I wanted to get closer to my family. And it really worked. I started to hang out with my family more. We watched more family movies and we played a lot of board games.”
The activity also helped students develop their interests.

Anne and Diana were getting ready for a concert. Anne was one of the performers.
“Are you nervous?” asked Diana.
“Not at all. I’ve spoken lots in public now. I’m reciting (背诵) a poem that is very emotional.”
At the hotel, Anne went to the performers’ dressing room. She suddenly felt shy. The other performers were from the city. She was from the country.
Unluckily, a professional speaker recited a poem before Anne. The audience was captivated (迷住). When it was time Anne walked slowly onto the stage. But she had a fear of the stage, and it paralyzed her completely. She stood without speaking. Then, she saw Gilbert in the audience. Anne thought that he was laughing at her. Actually, Gilbert was smiling because he was enjoying the evening. He thought Anne looked beautiful.
Anne did not want to fail in front of Gilbert. Her nervousness disappeared. She began her poem. She believed in herself.
When Anne finished there was lots of applause. She felt shy as she walked back to her seat.
After the concert, the lady from the city introduced Anne to everybody. A tall girl paid her a compliment (赞扬). They had dinner in an elegant dining room. Diana and Jane were invited, too. Anne felt very pleased with the evening.
“What an evening! Anne, your poem was great. I was worried at first. You were better than that professional woman,” said Jane.
“No, I wasn’t better than her. I’m only a schoolgirl, with a little talent. But I’m quite pleased that people liked my performance,” said Anne.
“Did you see all the diamonds (钻石) on those ladies? They were beautiful. Imagine being rich!” said Jane.
“We are rich. We’re sixteen years old. We’re happy and we’ve got imaginations. Look at that sky. It’s not lovelier with money. Do you want to be that tall girl and look sad all your life? Or the lady from the city. She is nice but she’s fat. You know you don’t, Jane Andrews,” said Anne.
“I don’t know. I think diamonds make you feel quite good,” said Jane.
“Well, I just want to be myself. I’m quite happy to be Anne of Green Gables, with my pearl necklace from Matthew.”

Resting my head on Helen’s shoulder, I put my arms round her waist (腰). She drew me to her, and we rested in silence.
We had not sat long before another person came in. Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright, and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you, Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burns is with you, she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen Burns to be seated in a low arm-chair on one side of the fireplace, and herself taking another, she called me to her side.
“Is it all over?” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away?”
“I am afraid I never shall do that.”
“Why?”
“Because I have been wrongly accused (指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”
“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”
“Shall I, Miss Temple?”
“You will.” said Miss Temple, “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate (夸大) nothing.”
I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.

“I had to leave school when I was thirteen, if I had half the chances that you have, I’d…” Mr. Ridley was giving a lecture (训斥) to his boy, Greg again. He was disappointed that Greg did poorly at school and didn’t allow him to play basketball anymore.
Feeling upset, Greg left home and wanted to go away. Suddenly, it rained heavily. Greg entered an old apartment. There he met a homeless old man named Lemon Brown.
As they talked, Greg learnt that Lemon was a singer before he met some hard times.
Now he was hiding there to protect his treasure from the bad men in the town “______” Greg asked.
“Actually, everyone gets a treasure.” Lemon Brown said. “You want to see mine?”
“If you want to show me.” Greg replied.
Lemon carefully took the rags away from his right leg, there was a piece of plastic.
Then he took out some yellowed newspaper. “Here it is,” he said.
Greg looked at the clippings in surprise. All of them were reviews of shows Lemon had been in when he was young.
“I used to travel around and sing to make money for my family. When my son Jesse grew up to be a soldier. I had nothing to give him except these things that told him who I was, and where he came from.”
“Then what happened?” Greg asked.
“One time I went home and got a letter saying Jesse was killed in the war. The army sent back all the things Jesse used to carry around-those old clippings. That was my treasure, and when I give it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure. Isn’t that something?”
“I guess so,” Greg said. “But you really think that treasure of yours was worth fighting against the bad guys?”
“As a boy, you’re sure to ask such a foolish question. What else can be more valuable than what a man can pass on to his son or daughter?” Lemon said as he put his treasure back in place.
The rain stopped then, Greg decided to go home. He believed Lemon would be OK with his memories and treasure.
When he rang the bell, Greg thought of the lecture his father would give him next, and smiled.

Everyone at home was happy, especially Fred, her brother. Seeing his smile, Caroline suddenly remembered Fred said he planned to do “a little help” to Sophie’s horse Blossom before the match.
“Fred,” Caroline said. “I need to talk to you. What did you mean when you said: ‘with a little help Blossom can be sick’?”
Fred told Caroline about Blossom and the sleeping pills.
“Look! I’m sorry about Sophie and all that, but I did it for you.”
“Fred!” Caroline cried. “Do you think I want to win like that? Do you really think that?”
“But I only wanted to help you. Look! Everyone is happy. You are, mum and dad are, your horse Apple wind is happy too, I think. And Sophie and Blossom will be okay in a few weeks.”

Fred started crying. “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I didn’t think…” “That’s alright, Fred,” Caroline said. “I know you did it for me. But we have to tell everyone the truth. I don’t want the Cup. Not like this!”
“But Caroline, if you tell the truth, dad will sell Apple wind.” “I know,” said Caroline. And then she started crying.

“Who wants to show us their special project first?” Mrs. Williams asked my fourth-grade class. We were allowed to do anything, as long as we did it ourselves. I burrowed my head in my sweater. Don’t call on me. Don’t call on me.
“Michael, your project, please.”
Michael. That was me. I hadn’t even raised my hand.
I walked to the front of the class on wobbly legs and set my birdhouse on the table. “This is how to build a birdhouse,” I swallowed the baseball-sized lump in my throat and started.
“I looked online for plans to build a birdhouse. Then I went to the lumberyard with my dad, since I’m not old enough to drive. Someone there cut four pieces for the walls, then they used a jigsaw for the hole.” I turned the birdhouse to show all four sides.
Luka’s hand shot up. We were supposed to take questions if anyone had them. Luka was my friend, but he always asked a billion questions. I just wanted to finish and sit down.
“So if someone at the lumberyard cut the wood and made the hole, and your dad drove you there, what did you do?” he asked.
I swallowed. The lump in my throat was now the size of a basketball. “I came up with the idea and talked to the person at the lumberyard about it. And I figured out how to hinge the roof so I can clean out the house after the birds leave.” I lifted the roof to show everyone. Some kids stood up to see.
“Then I nailed (钉住) all the walls together.” I picked up the heavy hammer (锤子) I had borrowed from Dad’s workbench. I had left one of the nails sticking out a little so I could demonstrate.
I looked up to see if Luka was watching as I gave the nail a strong hit. He was watching all right. The hammer came down on the roof instead of the nail.
Smash! The birdhouse landed in a pile of rubbish at my feet. There was a loud gasp, and then nobody spoke.
“I wanted to show you how to build a birdhouse — AND how to take it apart,” I said, thinking fast. I was sure there was sweat streaming down my face. “As you can see, I did it all myself.” The class burst out laughing. And then started clapping. For me!
“Fascinating project, Michael,” Mrs. Williams said. She was smiling so big that all her teeth showed. “Are you all right?” She whispered to me.
I nodded. As I walked to my seat, Jayce gave me a high five. “Wow. That was almost a disaster,” he said. “I can’t wait to see what you come up with for the Science Fair.”
“No idea,” I said, grinning, “but now I feel ready for anything.”

Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways?
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees (黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猫食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, hides its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others hide their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know that a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.

A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
B. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
C. All the animals survive by fooling other animals.
D. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner’s hand.

30. Which situation best shows the wisdom of Go?

A. She realized her mom kept her childhood art.
B. She discovered her mom’s old photo album.
C. She regretted misunderstanding her mom.
D. She forgot to prepare a Mother’s Day gift.
29. What does the word “preserved” mean in the context of the story?
A. Thrown away. B. Hidden carefully. C. Saved and protected. D. Bought recently.
