They spend summers eating food in cold waters and then travel to warm tropical areas in winter to have babies. These warm areas are called breeding grounds (繁殖地). These breeding grounds are very important for the whales, because they have the right temperature and few predators like killer whales. This is especially good for baby whales that don’t have much fat under their skin and can’t protect themselves well. Now, the earth is getting warmer and warmer, and this is mainly caused by human activities, such as driving cars, running factories, and using coal, oil and gas for energy. Global warming also makes the ocean water warmer. Humpback whales need water with a temperature between 21°C and 28°C to have babies. Because this suitable temperature helps baby whales grow quickly and stay healthy. If the ocean water gets warmer than this, the whales may have to move to new breeding grounds, but this is hard for them because they like returning to their favorite places every year. To predict what will happen to humpback whales in the future, scientists did a special project with the help of computer models. First, they collected data (数据) about the current ocean temperature and how it has changed in recent years in the areas where whales breed. Then, they used computers to predict how the ocean surface temperature might change by the year 2100. They also tested two different situations: One is that people continue to use lots of fossil fuels, and the other is that people turn to clean energy like solar power. The results of the project are very worrying. If people keep using lots of fossil fuels, about 67% of the breeding areas will become too warm, which will affect over half of the world’s humpback whales. Even with clean energy, about 35% of the breeding areas may still get too warm. Therefore, we must take action right now to protect these beautiful sea mammals and their breeding grounds 16.Why are breeding grounds important for humpback whales? A.They have lots of food B.They can help them swim faster C.They are safe and warm D.They are cold ocean waters 17.How does proper temperature influence humpback whales? A.It leads them to return to the ocean. B.It teaches them to protect themselves. C.It allows them to move more quickly. D.It helps them to grow fast and healthily 18.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.How scientists did the research on whales B.When people should start to use clean energy C.What computers can do to protect the whales D.Why the ocean temperature is becoming higher. 19.What does the writer think of the future of humpback whales? A.Clear. B.Serious. C.Cheerful. D.Hopeless 20.What may be written in the following text? A.The ways to save humpback whales. B.The history of humpback whales. C.The living areas of humpback whales. D.The eating habits of humpback whales. 16.第一段中“These breeding grounds are very important for the whales, because they have the right temperature and few predators like killer whales.” 17.第二段中“As this suitable temperature helps baby whales grow quickly and stay healthy. ”直接说明了适宜的温度对幼鲸的影响。 18.第三段详细介绍了科学家用计算机模型、收集数据、预测 2100 年温度、测试两种情景等研究过程,这些都是在讲科学家如何开展研究的。 19.最后一段中“The results of the project are very worrying. Therefore, we must take action right now to protect...” 20.文章末句“Therefore, we must take action right now to protect these beautiful sea mammals and their breeding grounds”呼吁大家采取行动去保护这些海洋哺乳动物,那后面一般会是具体的方法。 C The Australian Koala Foundation says Australia has lost about 30 percent of its koalas over the past three years. The non-profit (非营利) group says droughts (干旱), wildfires and development projects played a part in the drop in the koala population. They are strongly advising the government to do more to protect the animal’s environment. The group guesses the koala population has dropped to less than 58,000 this year from more than 80,000 in 2018. The biggest decrease is in the state of New South Wales, where the number of koalas has dropped by 41 percent. Deborah Tabart, leader of the Australian Koala Foundation, called the drop “quite dramatic”. Only one area in the study have more than 5,000 koalas. Some areas have as few as five or ten. Tabart said the country needs a koala protection law. She added, “What we worry about is places like western New South Wales where droughts have lasted for over ten years. Now, the effect is beginning to show up—river systems (系统) completely dry and the red gum trees (红桉树) are dead. We know they are the main food of koalas.” The loss in New South Wales likely became huge after large forest areas were destroyed (毁坏) by wildfires in late 2019 and early 2020. Some of those areas already had no koalas. Land clearing by building developers and road builders has also destroyed the koala’s environment. “I think everyone gets it, and we’ve got to change. But if those building-machines keep working, then I really fear for the koalas,” Tabart said. 21.Which is not the reason of the drop in the koala population? A.droughts. B.wildfires C.development projects. D.floods 22.What does the underlined word “dramatic” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Exciting. B.Surprising. C.Relaxing. D.Interesting. 23.How does the writer tell us about koalas situation in Paragraph 2? A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples. C.By asking questions. D.By analyzing (分析) facts. 24.What does the word “they” refer to in Paragraph 3? A.river systems. B.koalas. C.gum tress. D.the effect. 25.What’s the main idea of the passage? A.Some are hunting koalas in Australia. B.Koalas in Australia are in great danger. C.Development has put koalas in danger. D.Everyone should take actions to protect Koalas. 根据第一段“The non-profit (非营利) group says droughts (干旱), wildfires and development projects played a part in the drop in the koala population.” 根据第二段“The biggest decrease is in the state of New South Wales, where the number of koalas has dropped by 41 percent.” 根据第二段“The group guesses the koala population... have as few as five or ten.” 根据“Now, the effect is beginning to show up—river systems (系统) completely dry and the red gum trees (红桉树) are dead. We know they are the main food of koalas.” Today, if a kind of animal is an endangered species (物种), it means there are very few animals of that kind left on Earth. The animals could face extinction (灭绝). 26 When a type of animal is extinct, it is gone forever. One problem for animals is that they have fewer and fewer living places. As human populations increase, more and more space is needed. Building houses for people to live in makes animals leave their natural homes. Humans cut down trees to make room for homes and houses. The animals lose their living places. They have nowhere else to go. 27 28 Better planning can make a difference. It is still possible to keep so many kinds of animals in the nature parks or zoos, so that they don’t need to worry about the food problem. Another major problem is over-killing by humans. 29 So the governments around the world must agree on laws about protecting animals. Some animals may have large enough populations so hunting will not put them in danger, but others not. 30 Some organizations are working hard to create living places for them. Producing programs by governments are helping animal populations increase. We all have to know the problem and think before we act. The things we do can have an effect on more than just ourselves. Over-killing is a worldwide problem. A.Extinction is when all the animals of that kind die. B.However, they can be helpful to the lovely animals. C.Killing animals is a world-wide problem. D.It is also important for animals to have enough food to eat. E.There is still hope for animals on the endangered species list. F.Without a living place, the number of animals begins to go down. 26.根据上文“The animals could face extinction (灭绝).” 故选A。 27.根据上文“The animals loses their living places. They have nowhere else to go.” 28.根据下文“they don’t need to worry about the food problem.” 29.根据上文“Another major problem is over-killing by humans.” 30.根据下文“Some organizations are working hard to create living places for them. Producing programs by governments are helping animal populations increase.” B.There are several reasons(原因)why animals become endangered. They are environmental changes, pollution(污染), illness, more killing, fewer places to live in and so on. C. The WWF chose the panda to be its symbol. It works in more than 100 countries around the world to protect the diversity(多样性)of life on earth. D.Now the number of tigers living in the wild has dropped to 3,200. Tigers lived in about 25 countries many years ago, but today they are only found in 13 countries. E. You can help protect endangered animals by learning why they are endangered and giving your money to organizations like the WWF. F. One of these animals is the elephant. They now face food shortages and shrinking habitats—forests where they live are being cut down. Animals are at risk mainly because of human activities: people hunt them for profit, and environmental pollution worsens their living conditions. To save them, we should set up more nature reserves and make strict laws to stop illegal hunting. Also, we need to call on more people to protect the environment. Let’s act to save our animal friends! [亮点词汇] ①face food shortages 面临食物短缺 ②set up nature reserves 建立自然保护区 ③illegal hunting 非法捕猎 [高分句型] To save them, we should set up more nature reserves and make strict laws to stop illegal hunting. (“To do”结构表目的,作目的状语) 升级版本(原创) Save Animals in Danger There are many animals in danger. One of these animals is the elephant. Now elephants are living in great trouble. They suffer from food shortages, and their living habitats are becoming smaller and smaller as forests are destroyed. Lots of animals are endangered for two main reasons. On one hand, some cruel people hunt them for money. On the other hand, serious environmental pollution makes it hard for animals to survive. It’s time for us to take action to protect them. Now a piece of good news makes everyone excited. China plans to build a national park in Jilin and Heilongjiang. The park is especially for two kinds of animals—the Amur leopard and the Siberian tiger This park will be part of China’s whole national parks plan. It will cover 5,600 square miles—much larger than Yellowstone National Park in the USA.The park will be one of the largest big cat parks in the world. In fact, the two big cats have already been in big danger. In 2007, there were only less than 30 Amur leopards living in the wild. What’s worse, the Siberian tiger’s situation was no better than that. If people don’t do something to protect them, we may not see any of them one day. In order to save the animals, China comes up with the idea of a national park. What’s more, China has become the world’s biggest investor (投资者) in green technology. The country is trying its best to protect the environment. 11.Where will the new national park be? A.In Hangzhou and Suzhou. B.In Beijing and Zhangjiakou. C.In Jilin and Heilongjiang. B Humpback whales (座头鲸) are large sea mammals.
